2) Does it now support PS 3.0

2013-02-13 Thread Senter, John
So the big question, does Exchange 2010 SP3 contain all of the fixes in SP2
RU6??? The documentation states it contains all fixes before its release, but
SP2 RU6 has the same release date.

RE: Exchange 2010 SP3, SP2 RU6 released...

2013-02-13 Thread Michael B. Smith
Does 2010 SP3 have schema changes? Yes.
Does 2010 SP2 UR6 have schema changes? No.
Does 2007 SP3 UR10 have schema changes? No.

The current servicing model for 2007 and 2010 does not allow for schema changes
in URs. It does allow for schema changes in SPs.

(And, in the future for 2013, in CUs.)

RE: Exchange 2010 SP3, SP2 RU6 released...

2013-02-13 Thread Paul Gordon
As is becoming depressingly common with MS's documentation, the wording
isn't completely precise, and leaves room for ambiguity.

The release notes
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj965774%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx)
explicitly state:

1. Exchange 2010 SP3 makes updates to the Active Directory schema. To
learn more about these schema changes, see Exchange Server Changes to the
Active Directory Schema .

However, the schema reference linked to in that statement has NOT been
updated to reflect the existence of SP3, so there's no way to know *what*
schema changes, over and above SP2 are required.

Of course we know that schema updates have been included in (all?) Service
packs released thus far, including SP2, so we know for certain that if
you're applying SP3 to an RTM or SP1 environment, there definitely WILL be
schema changes, as we know there were some in SP2.

It does NOT make it absolutely crystal clear though, whether there are
additional schema changes over & above the SP2 ones. - I'll wager that
because this is supposed to be the release that allows E2013 interop that
there almost certainly *has* to be?

I guess it wouldn't be crazy hard to figure it out?... - grab copies of the
LDIF files from SP2 & SP3 media & compare them. - apply SP3 & check the
Install log (and check the rangeupper attribute value) - however the KB here
also has not been updated with the rangeupper value for 2010SP3.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/556086

Grrr.. - why can't they get their act together to sort out these things
before launching these major updates on an unsuspecting world?!?! - It's no
wonder no-one wants to be first go install this!!

A colleague has now installed SP3 in a test lab, on what was previously an
SP2 environment, and confirms that it absolutely DOES perform additional
schema changes. I don't yet know what the new schema version number is
though.

I know what order to upgrade the server roles but when do you do the
management console installs? I'm guessing after the CAS servers.

The two main questions I have are:

1) Does SP3 include the fixes from SP2 RU6 (I'm guessing yes)

2) Does it now support PS 3.0

Curiously, Exchange 2010 SP2 RU6 contains an ActiveSync loop fix:

So those iOS6.1 "loop" issues may not be entirely Apple's fault.

Maybe need a refresh somewhere ;-)

A colleague has now installed SP3 in a test lab, on what was previously an SP2
environment, and confirms that it absolutely DOES perform additional schema
changes. I don't yet know what the new schema version number is though.

Subject: RE: Exchange 2010 SP3, SP2 RU6 released...

As is becoming depressingly common with MS's documentation, the wording isn't
completely precise, and leaves room for ambiguity...

The release notes
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj965774%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx)
explicitly state:

  1. Exchange 2010 SP3 makes updates to the Active Directory schema. To learn
more about these schema changes, see Exchange Server Changes to the Active
Directory Schema.
However, the schema reference linked to in that statement has NOT been updated
to reflect the existence of SP3, so there's no way to know *what* schema
changes, over and above SP2 are required.
Of course we know that schema updates have been included in (all?) Service
packs released thus far, including SP2, so we know for certain that if you're
applying SP3 to an RTM or SP1 environment, there definitely WILL be schema
changes, as we know there were some in SP2...

It does NOT make it absolutely crystal clear though, whether there are
additional schema changes over & above the SP2 ones... - I'll wager that
because this is supposed to be the release that allows E2013 interop that there
almost certainly *has* to be?
I guess it wouldn't be crazy hard to figure it out?... - grab copies of the
LDIF files from SP2 & SP3 media & compare them... - apply SP3 & check the
Install log (and check the rangeupper attribute value) - however the KB here
also has not been updated with the rangeupper value for 2010SP3...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/556086

Grrr - why can't they get their act together to sort out these things
before launching these major updates on an unsuspecting world?!?! - It's no
wonder no-one wants to be first go install this!!

Subject says it all.

Exchange 2010 server (only Exchange 2010 server I have), Windows 2008 R2, 16 GB
Ram. 400 Users, about 300 OWA, the rest using various versions of Outlook. Some
active sync devices (Blackberry, I-phone/I-pad/I-touch, android).

There is an Exchange 2003 server behind it, but it seems to be fine. Disk space
on both log files drive(c drive, 60 GB free) and store drive (d drive, 1 TB+
free) have lots of space. Edge transport will eat up all ram, then ease off for
a while, down to about ½, then back up again. No specific time amount of up or
down, seems quite random, but it will happen every few minutes.

Problems started last night or early this morning. I've disabled the
anti-virus, just in case. I did install SP1 (yes, SP1, I'm somewhat behind the
8 ball) this morning, but I don't think that is the issue, as I think problems
were manifesting themselves before I did it (yes, I know, I should have checked
closer, and fixed the problem first).

I don't see any back-pressure event ID's. Event Log basically just shows that
edge transport is using up all the memory, and various functions/queues are
being disabled. So mail is sporadic.

Googleing suggests that most of the time the issue is related to disk space,
which isn't my problem.

RE: Exchange 2010 SP1 EdgeTransport.exe eating up all memory

2013-02-13 Thread Reimer, Mark
Restarting the Transport will drop the memory, for a few minutes.
Queues: There is a queue called submission. I didn't know how to check/look at
the queues (I'm learning Exchange). Anyway, it had 3 messages, each over 1 GB.
I asked the user to delete the messages, and also I had to stop transport,
rename the Data folder, and start transport.

I think that will fix it. I'll post more if it doesn't.

Thanks Michael. As usual, you're a lifesaver, and kept me from going balder :).

RE: Exchange 2010 SP1 EdgeTransport.exe eating up all memory

2013-02-13 Thread KevinM
Emails over 1GB ? were they sent from outlook 2003 that does not care about
exchange sending limits, or do you have no size limits ?

Subject: RE: Exchange 2010 SP1 EdgeTransport.exe eating up all memory

Restarting the Transport will drop the memory, for a few minutes.
Queues: There is a queue called submission. I didn't know how to check/look at
the queues (I'm learning Exchange). Anyway, it had 3 messages, each over 1 GB.
I asked the user to delete the messages, and also I had to stop transport,
rename the Data folder, and start transport.

I think that will fix it. I'll post more if it doesn't.

Thanks Michael. As usual, you're a lifesaver, and kept me from going balder :).

Subject: Exchange 2010 SP1 EdgeTransport.exe eating up all memory

Things to check for? Ideas?

RE: Calendar Repair Assistant

It seems much better behaved post SP1. The main issue we faced was notifying
end users to expect changes to their calendars when we first started running it.

Look for advice, any input or comments appreciated. We have run into some
calendaring issues here and there and I'm wondering about the Calendar Repair
Assistant, looks glorious based on the description and could solve all of our
problems...

Are most people running it? Does it work as advertised? Is it just a set and
forget operation with the potential for the need to review the logs
occasionally in the event of a problem? How far out in the future do you set
this to run?

Just wondering if there are other considerations or implications before turning
it on as it's off by default. We have an extremely mixed client
environment...as do most in EDU an as a result calendaring issues are pretty
common.

RE: Offline Address Book, Public Folder Database

2013-02-13 Thread Michael B. Smith
This should NOT be necessary if you have properly removed the public folder
databases on your Exchange 2003 servers.

And I wouldn’t recommend doing this anyway.

I’d suggest creating a NEW Default Offline Address List and removing the old
one, to ensure that EVERYTHING gets created properly.

Subject: Offline Address Book, Public Folder Database

As part of my continuing effort to finalize our 2003 to 2010 migration, I was
confirming that Offline Address Book generation was happening on 2010. The
guide I was looking at had an example of running “Get-OfflineAddressBook | fl”.
When running this command, I noted that the “PublicFolderDatabase” attribute
was still showing the Public Folder database on our old 2003 server.
Everything else indicates the 2010 server.

http://blog.ronnypot.nl/?p=212 describes my scenario. This page suggests that
I should go into ADSIEdit and fix this. I am not particularly keen on that.
Can anyone confirm/deny this is appropriate or is there something else I have
missed that would fix this? We do still have 2003 clients, so I need the PF
distribution for them.

RE: Exchange 2010 SP1 EdgeTransport.exe eating up all memory

2013-02-13 Thread Reimer, Mark
Yup. A bit more research (Googling) caught me with no limits. That has been
fixed now. :).

Unless (as KevinM implied) you are running Outlook 2003.

Seems more likely that you do not have limits where you think you do...

I thought by not setting any, the default of 10MB would be enforced. Not true?

There ya go.

You probably want to set some limits. :)

Does restarting MsExchangeTransport do anything at all?

What do your queues look like?

Things to check for? Ideas?

Thanks in advance
