In place upgrade DB convert time
Hi Folks Just wondering about the process of an in place upgrade from 5.5SP4 to e2k. I would assume that the database needs to be converted to the new format. My question is how long does this process take on a fairly decent box? (dual CPU 1GBRAM SAN attaqched storage) The priv DB is about 65 GB. Any info or past experiencse about inplace upgrades would be helpful. Cheers Dan List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

RE: How to move IMC from one server to another
ahhh ok... :) Well my situation is : two servers in one site... one has dedicated mailboxes the other has mailboxes and and the IMC. The new system will replace the one with the IMC. I plan to install the new server into the same site and move all the users from the old system to the new one. After that has done it only leaves the IMC to be migrated. All of our mail will be held on a UNIX system via MX priorities, so loosing mail is not a problem. So with that info, does that help ? :) -Original Message- From: Snook, Kevin S (ITD) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, 26 November 2001 9:05 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: How to move IMC from one server to another Is the IMS on it's own server? Does it have user mailboxes on it? How is it connected to the outside world? Answer's to these questions will affect the process. It is possible that if the IMS is on it's own serevr without any user mailboxes that you can isolate the IMS for some time whilst you test. Do you have the liberty of being able to use two IMSs in parallel? If so, that is by far the best way to go. It will allow mail to flow through the old IMS whilst you hook up the new one and gradually "phase in" the new one, probably using Costs. (You will have to adjust your inbound config as well - I don't know what that is so can't help you with that) If you don't have this option then best thing I found was to not bother copying queues - it's a real mess. Use the flush queues startup option in the IMS to flush the queues so that your IMS has nothing in it's queues then stop your IMS and all mail is queued at the MTA and on your external system (possibly your ISP?). Move your IMS using imccopy or, in fact, you can just add the new IMS. imccopy gives you the peace of mind that you've remembered to do everything like Connection info, address spaces, etc but it's not mandatory. Adjust the old IMS so that no mail will be sent via that route (delete Address Space, change Costs). Recalculate routing when you have finished adding the new IMS. Restart the MTA. Ensure the new routing has replicated through your site and restart the MTAs on all other servers in the site. Send a test message and track it! I've written this off the top of my head so I'm sure I've forgotten something so test this first! Exchange clustering
Hi Everyone I am looking for some good advice on Exchange clustering. To give you some background information.. SYSTEM SETUP 3 x Exchange 5.5 SP4 systems running in the same org and site: Sever 1 IMC PRIV and PUB Stores Server 2 PRIV Store Server 3 PRIV Store MY OBJECTIVE Migrate Server 1 to a Highly Available Exchange cluster which should support a concurrent userbase of 850 users and storage to support a userbase of 1000 users with a 200MB quota. Sever 1 is already attached to a Compaq SAN via Fibre Channel so the diskspace is not a problem. ADVICE: Basically I can see three options, and with these options are pro's and cons.. Option 1 Run Exchange 5.5 on an NT4.0 cluster Pros The exchange system can be installed into the same site and the users can be simply migrated to the new Highly Available (HA) system. No change to global System layout Cons To upgrade from e5.5 to e2k there may be issues with doing a rolling upgrade on the cluster.. I am no expert on performing a rolling upgrade on Exchange or win2k Option 2 Run Exchange 5.5 on a W2k Cluster Pros The exchange org layout doesn't get changed and the users can be migrated The cluster is running under w2k and can take advantage of the newer clustering / load balancing technologies Cons There could be stabiltiy problems with running e5.5 on a w2k system (once again I have never done this) with patches etc Migration issues ?? Option 3 Migrate to ek2 and run a cluster Pros Org is running in full AD evironment and w2k cluster technologies Cons Have to migrate to w2k/ads before even attempting to migrate to e2k. ADS implementation will take time and money SoooOOo yeah there it is :) I would like to hear from anyone who has done or is in the process of doing anything similar to what I am trying to acheive.
