 Hey

Double-take failover

2002-02-13 Thread Jeff Pace

Hello all,
I have two exchange servers that are running double-take.
Everything is fine and dandy until I test the failover. The #2 machine
takes over the identity of the #1 machine. This works fine, what doesn't
work is the login to the domain.
I lose my domain login and in result cannot pass email over the network.
When I try rebooting the #2 machine (now #1) the domain says the account
doesn't exist.

I have inherited this network and the domain was setup already. I don't
know much about how the domain works.

Servers = NT4.0 compaq proliant SP 4

exchange = 5.5

The odd thing about this situation is that I aslo have two other servers
running double-take, although not on ecxhange, and they work fine when
failed over and failed back.

TIA,
Jeff

RE: Double-take failover

2002-02-13 Thread Jeff Pace

both PDC and BDC are running nt server 4.0 SP 6

when failover occurs, I can see the #2 server lose all connections(ie red x
over the 4 servers running double-take)
from the PDC server manager...network path cannot be found(both #1 and #2
servers)

when I try to reboot the #2 server with the #1 server off of the network, I
no longer can access the domain, and the only way I have found to get back
in is to remove it and re-enter the domain.

I concur there are no issues with using it in my test lab what so ever.

The issue looks to be that the #2 server doesn't have a user account for
the domain?

Is the issue that when you reboot the 2nd machine and go to do an admin
login?

Double-Take works fine with Exchange 5.5, although I admit I do not know
the
cause of this particular problem, I don't think it is specific to
Double-Take.
Our list host (Sunbelt Software) sells this fine product.
http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/product.cfm?id=111 and NSI includes
Exchange-specific configuration details.
I may be wrong, but I thought I read at one point where it had been
tested
with Exchange by Microsoft.

I have a dedicated PDC (well exchange isn't on it anyway).

and yes one exchange server fails over to another exchange sever.

so it works good for you?

any issues with domain login after failover?
are you using WINS?

Thanks,

Do you have a dedicated PDC or is it one of the Exchange Servers?

On the double-take configuration are you failing one exchange server over to
another or do the exchange servers failover to a dedicated target server?

I don't know if Microsoft certified double-take or not but I know it works
very well.

I am suspecting something is up with the WINS database.
I am cetainly no expert and its time to RTFM on WINS.

any advice on what to look for in there?

my maintenance agreement (NSI) ran out long ago and its $1195 per server to
reinstate them.
I'll be trying to fix it on my own for now.

There certainly is a spot to change the failover time!
I have it set to 15 minutes on my Exchange server, that gives me time for
the occasional reboot.
I believe Sunbelt was also supporting Double-Take, but I would imagine
that to be the case only if you purchased it through them.

We tested Double Take but never implemented it. There wasn't an option to
change the failover time. It would automatically failover after 20
seconds,
didn't like that. From what I remember though, they have a tech support
help desk. You may want to give them a call.

First and foremost:

What is the PDC?
What is the BDC?

You need to provide more information about your domain if anyone is to help
you.

PS Get NT 4.0 SP6a on those NT4 servers asap.

pop3 and port 25

2001-11-15 Thread Jeff Pace

Ladies and gentlemen,
I am running exchange 5.5 on NTserver 4.0
(btw, this is my first time..so be gentle)
have outlook clients set up and trying to test the system.
I log 2 users into different workstations and attempt to set a test email.
I get:
The connection to the sever has failed.
Protocol:SMTP, Port 25, Secure (SSL)No, socket error:10061
Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

after reviewing (Q191687)...
telnet established port 110 as active and listening.
netstat -an confirms port 25 not there.
it states that IIS service must be running to make port 25 available.
I am not currently running IIS.
Is this the problem? I don't even have IIS on the server..
Calgon take me away!
any help would be appreciated...thanks,
Jeff

Time to call in a consulting firm kiddo.

Since you can send and receive mail it is more then likely not the IMS. My
hunch is that Outlook is the outlook client thinks it is looking for
internet when it should be set for corporate. It is also probably not even
connect to the server.
Look at Tools, Services, . Does it say Microsoft Exchange Server on the
services tab? Under delivery does it say mailbox with person name?

The intel failed, the metal detectors failed, the x-ray machines failed, and
the baggage inspections failed. Ultimately the last line of defense, and
the only one that worked at all was the passengers. Maybe we should be
looking at developing that last line of defense, rather than trying to find
ways to disarm it.
