Just do add a different option, we use Praetor by CMS Connect. I have
been very happy with the monitoring and flexibility, although I am not sure
about reports. I can see the traffic, but would have to inquire about that
aspect. I love the antispam layout, and options it
provides.

I
am surprised you had to call MS to know about the relaying. Exch is very
vulnerable; there are not enough built in tools for 5.5 to do much about
relays. Praetor slams that shut as well as ME.

Ditto here. We've been very happy with the content
filtering from Mail Essentials. You can also setup company wide
disclaimers on outgoing email auto-replies for mailboxes, and set
size limits on outgoing mail. We would be very lost without this
  software.
Word of advise though, if you are using Exchange to
prevent relay's, you'll need to set this up in Mail Essentials because ME
gets the smpt mail first and then passes it to exchange and exchange will
accept it relay it on. This bit of info cost my organization a
  $245 call to Microsoft.

 Scenario 1:

Your logs and databases are both on the same RAID5 array.
Your last full online backup was last night at 11pm.
Today, at 4pm, your database gets corrupt. Say you notice a -1018, or
two disks in the RAID5 array have failed, or whatever.

All you therefore have is last night's backup. Tell me, what
 does that
 mean?

 Scenario 2:

The same as scenario 1, except your logs are on a separate
 RAID1 array.

You therefore have last night's backup, plus the transaction logs.
 What's the difference now?

Can you quote the reasons for it.
I honestly don't see any other reason to put Log files on a Mirrored
 partition.
Its not fault tolerant.. At least not on the fly.. If 1 drive
 fails, ya
gotta break the mirror.. If its RAID 5, it will still run. If
 its not a
performance issue to put them on their own Mirrored
 partition, why would
 you do it?
Is it just to keep them safe in case your database drive goes down? If
 that happens, youre still Skrewed

I would put exchange and your pdc on a Dual PIII 733 MHZ processor
..minimum.. With at least 1 GB of RAM and no less than 40 GB of RAID 5
storage. Ive run Exchange on the RAID1 for logs, RAID 1 for
 OS and RAID
5 for the database specs.. And I see NO increase in peformance than if
it was all on a RAID 5 partition.

I had our exchange server on an Pentium Pro 100 HP net sever
 with 196 MB
of ram for about the first year we used exchange. It was the PDC, DHCP
Server, Primary WINS, Ras server with 8 VPN ports and the exchange
server with 180 boxes on it. Processor utilization rarely got above 50
percent. Lack of Hard Drive space, and memory, 196 MB was max for that
box, were the reasons I took exchange off of it. Microsoft says you
should have one domain controller for each 1 accounts if
 I remember
correctly, and this was written in the days of Pentium Pro

kick butt machine. Unless you have thousands of users I
 really don't see
the domain controller resource drain a bar to putting an
 exchange box on
a PDC. However I would not recommend putting it on a box with anything

 day when I

   ArcCrapIt. That way you can
do backups the way they are supposed to be done
   versus the way you're
making an excuse for it to be done.

Stop making it so hard on yourself and go buy some
   disks for the server.
Which drive is running out of space anyway? Is it
   the 2GB or the 6.5GB
partition? How big is your IS? Where are your
   transaction logs
   located?

Why do you have such a nice server with such a
  poor
   configuration?
Whether or not you inherited it, it is up to you
  to
   fix it. That is...
If you choose to. From the sounds of it you have
   chosen not to. You
   have chosen poorly...

   Ok,

It would seem that all of you know that Arcserve
   stinks, you know that I
know that, oh and who said anything about using an
   arcserve agent, we
stop all services and do full disk backup to tape
   daily. But if I
cannot get money to buy drives how do I replace
  the
   backup software
whilst staying legal??? I inherited this, it was
   not choice believe me
   ;-)

Now, can someone help me out here and let me know
how to get to the 1Gb
showing against the internet mail service in
  mailbox
   resources? Please?

   Duncan

   LOL!

Offline backups = infrequent additional backup
   support for online
backups Circular Logging = only for front end
   machines with no
mailboxes DarkServeIT Exchange Agent = for
   masochistic admins

NTBackup for 60GB on 2 servers? Wow.

Cause offense? Here? Bring it on, babe!

Michele, (sorry can't find the keystroke to do
  the
   accent ;-p) I was
under the impression the Agents for Exchange
  (i.e.
   Brick Level Backups
   - sorry to swear William.. ) were BAD?? I've
  never
   used BE (more's the
pity) but I have had the same experiences as
   William -
Arrrggghserve and agents . all of which
  are
   not even good
enough to be classified as terrible... that
   would be insulting to
   bad software ;-)

I know OFE and Exchange is a no - no . but
   NTBackup works just
dandy for us and our 60Gb+ on 2 servers Exchange
   5.5 setup here

I was warning him based on the fact that he
  stated
   clearly that he
   currently uses A* mailto:A*@%rve @%rve..
  I
   can't bring myself
to use it's name in public any more and does
  an
   offline
backup.. so their agent would be the
  logical
   choice for him and
that would be BAD BAD BAD (back me up here
  William
   - PLEASE??)

Sorry if I cause offence but it's something I
   can get a little
   passionate about... Jack

2001-08-28 Thread Jim Busick

I have certain users that are receiving Word document attachments as the
file WINMAIL.DAT. This file seems to be the Word formatting info with
'IPM.Microsoft Mail.note' imbedded at the top of the document and references
to our Exchange server at the end. Is this something to do with our MS Mail
Connector?
