RE: Autodiscover IIS issue

2008-02-08 Thread Matt Bullock
Yes, autodisover has entries in DNS and is also included in the cert. I
get the same results browsing to mail.domain.com and
autodiscover.domain.com. Wireshark is a good idea, I'll get that
installed and see if I notice anything.

Thanks,

Matt

Do you have an autodiscover.domain.com DNS record and a cert to go with
it? That was the only way I was able to get ours to work error free. I
loaded up Wireshark and saw that Outlook 2007 was calling for that DNS
record specifically.

As far as the errors you listed I think I got those same errors on the
Exchange server, but if I went to a work station with Powershell loaded
(I also happened to have Outlook 2007 on that machine, don't know if
that makes a difference) then I did not get the errors.

Unfortunately I don't have any documentation on the troubleshooting I
did, so this is just off the top of my head. HTH

OWA and ActiveSync are working properly using the NLB address, along

RE: Spam Filter / Anti-Spam

2008-01-08 Thread Matt Bullock
I wholeheartedly agree. Back in '01 I started learning linux systems to
try and stay ahead of the curve, but in '04 did some consulting for a
web dev/hosting company that had FreeBSD servers running their sites.
After having to figure out and use what I thought was an archaic UNIX
OS, I learned was a far more organized and stable platform. It's not
the best in every situation like anything else, but for the most part,
it can meet or exceed any comparisons with the top linux distros.

One issue I have had is with proprietary software from vendors that will
only run on RedHat or Solaris, where you will need to make a decision to
either change the software or the OS.

Depends on what you mean by special. Heh.

Long ago, I tried lotsa flavors of Linux - slackware, redhat, and a
couple of others. That was before 2000. At about that time I joined a
little startup that was embedding FreeBSD in an appliance for video
streaming - they've since gone bust.

But, I played with, and then seriously used, FreeBSD in 2000/2001, and
never looked back.

There are lots of reasons, but one good explanation for it is here:

http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/rants/bsd4linux/bsd4linux1.php

For me, all of the above applies, but the strongest reasons are what I
consider a sane system for maintaining and upgrading my machines
(ports and packages, plus the buildworld/buildkernel process), the
lack of fracture and squabbling in the community, and also a sane way
of organizing the directory hierarchy on disk, WRT where system
binaries are kept vs. userland stuff.

Almost always It Just Works, and when I'm ignorant enough to either
screw things up or not understand how to get them going, the lists are
incredibly helpful. This, in spite of the fact that FreeBSD doesn't
always have the latest and greatest programs available, and isn't
really the world's spiffiest desktop. I don't generally care about
XWindow stuff. I work from the command line or a web page, and 99+% of
the time FreeBSD does *exactly* what I want.

Linux is good, but FreeBSD happens to fit me better. YM Will Vary.

Hi,

I don't know if exists any article, but you can follow this procedure:

1) Install no seccond server, on the same Org
2) If you install this server on a different site of your BH server,
configure a connector between both them.
3) Install the new IMS, and verify your server can connect to any host
on the internet, and hosts on the internet can connect your e-mail
server (on port 25)
4) Add a seccond MX entry on your DNS, to your seccondary e-mail server.
Configure the value, according to your preferente. Less value, preferred
server.

In that case, I think is your answer. I found all kinds of stuff by
searching TechNet for congestion.

Actually it is an Exchange 5.5 server with SP6a and it is the second
server in the primary site. The first server is the bridgehead and
Internet connection for the whole corporate organization.

  If I disable circular

Then I guess the next thing I would try would be to disable circular
logging. I have 2 servers running Backup Exec 8, one with a DDS3 and
one with a DDS4, neither have circular logging enabled. The remote
agent backup has me worried too. Are you backing up the exchange
database from another server? That is something I havent tested
before. I always do local backups when it comes to exchange.

I hope
you have taken the time to read ALL the posts to your thread. If not I
would highly recommend you do so. If you still wish to go back and offline
defrag your database then you might want to go back and read ALL the posts
again. Basically, unless you absolutely need the space back, your current
exchange database will not grow in size AT ALL until you reuse the space
thatwas already allocated for those deleted 50
mailboxes.

Where and how are delegate access and Outlook folder permissions stored?
They're obviously on the server, but where? Can these be centrally managed?
Exchange Admin doesn't appear to give any control over it.

I've looked for this info for some time now; google doesn't help, nor does

How
about giving us more info about the system setup. RAID? How many partitions? How did you setup Exchange? Default everything? The M Drive is a virtual drive, but
it is a representation of the Information Store. So where is your Information
Store? Is the drive it is on
running out of space? Do you
have a drive on the server that has plenty of space? You can move the databases - that
will likely solve your problem.

You are absolutely
correct that is the easy answer. However the "M:\" drive that I speak

already done that if I could figure out how to get exchange to put it on the

Hi All,

I have a weird one.

I inherited this one around 20 hours ago. Its Exchange 2k (build
4417.5 -
what SP is that?) on Win2k server SP1.

The server has not been backed up since March 2000, if at all.

The priv.edb is 3.5Gb, the log files are 15.5Gb - they ran out of drive
space yesterday.

Backup Exec gives access denied to directory when trying to backup the
information store. NTBackup completes in 1 sec and skips all files,
saying
they cannot be restored.

BE runs as local system on the same machine. I tried creating a new
user,
adding it to Exchange Servers group and fed it to backup exec - same
error.
I also tried - for troubleshooting purposes - delegating full control of
the
exchange organisation to the everyone group with no luck. I have
reversed
these changes.

Any thoughts on where I should look? I suspect active directory might be
broken - I don't know the history to be sure.

Cheers,
Marty

Public Folder Replication from 5.5 to 2000

2001-10-26 Thread Matt Bullock

While migrating the network from NT4 Exch 5.5 SP4 to Exch 2000, we
have run into problems with the ADC creating duplicate mailbox accounts
causing smtp mail to stop working and found the Primary Connection agreement
to be the cause. Since then, we have changed the CA to a One-Way from
Exchange to Windows agreement (non primary), but even with replication set
up between the 2 servers, the Public Folders will not replicate to the
Exchage 2000 server. At this point, is there a way to go back to using a
Primary connection agreement without killing our network, or is there a way
to replicate the Public Folder information without a Primary Connection
agreement?

TIA

Hello All,
I've been asked to setup a windows type environment (PDC, Exchange server
5.5, VPN server, proxy) into an existing Unix/Linux environment. I will
probably use Owa as the mail client because I am not sure if the others have

a client that works with exchange server. The reason for Exchange is for
the groupware type functionality (calendaring, public folders etc) that they

can't get with Sendmail. I have very little experience with Linux/Unix.
Hopefully (albeit stupid) this is a simple question(s). How does Unix/Linux

logon to an NT domain?...can logon policies be setup within this
domain?...is Owa the way to go for email clients? Any answers or comments
regarding mixed environments is appreciated.

RE: Exchange 5.5 question

The ADC setup must be on a Global Catalog server. Make sure you read all
the doc's you can find. After you install the ADC dont create any
connection agreements with your 5.5 server. You will have to run the
/forestprep and /domainprep first. This consists of running Exchange 2000
setup with the appropriate switch

D:\ENGLISH\EXCH2000\ENT\SETUP\I386\SETUP.EXE /FORESTPREP
then run
D:\ENGLISH\EXCH2000\ENT\SETUP\I386\SETUP.EXE /DOMAINPREP

How would you go about limiting users to only using OWA? I've found
directions for locking down OWA, but not the other way around. I'll
probably laugh if it's something real simple, but I had to ask...
Background - we just added a bunch of remote employees who will only be
accessing e-mail via OWA. In the off chance that they ever come here, we
don't want them to be able to log into the network on a PC.
We run Exchange 5.5 SP4 on a W2k box. IIS is on the Exchange box.

Restrict GAL

2001-09-04 Thread Matt Bullock

Was looking for a way to restrict individual users from seeing the GAL in
Exchange 5.5 SP4 without having to go through something like this:

And my reply was stupid.

Matt, Address Book Views are an effective way to restrict GAL access.
We have 2 separate businesses running in a single Exchange site. Address
Book Views works effectively to make it seem that the companies have their
own server in a sense.

I'm not sure what was funny.

Subject: Users Cannot Connect to Server

Hey Guru's
Exchange 5.5 sp4 running on NT4 sp6a 512 megs of ram - Three drives C:500
megs free d:20 gigs free and e:20 gigs free as reported by My Computer. The
server is fully patched (but not the new rollup fix - want to see other's
experience with it first).
This morning new users were unable to connect. If you left your system
running the night before all was fine - received email send - no issues but
if you logged on this morning you got Exchange Server Unavailable. Server
was up - all services running. No errors in event log other than event 1008
relating to performance Monitor.
In my notifications I got a notice that Error 67 occurred - no other
information and a notice that drive D: was nearly full - Hard to believe
with it showing 20 gigs free.
We are only running about 300 users and the priv.edb is 5.9 gigs. No public
folders.
A reboot cleared it up but I do not like that being the answer.
Anyone have any ideas on where to start? My KB search for error 67 pulled
up nothing that seems to relate.
TIA
Jim

said, No, I made a few mistakes. -- Steven Wright

Scanmail

2001-08-16 Thread Matt Bullock

Has this posed a problem for anyone, or should I just use the MAPI mode?

Known Exchange AVAPI Issues:

o We recommend installing ScanMail v3.52 on a server that does not have
the IMC (Internet Mail Connector) installed. During testing we found
some issues with outgoing Internet mail messages containing
attachments, which are routed to Exchange for delivery.
