RE: virus scan

2002-01-18 Thread Neil Ferguson

I've had this with Groupshield, it's a feature. You need to configure the on
demand scan to not block the attachment '_??' Also, you'll need hotfix 7 and
need to configure the options regarding macros - don't select 'enable macro
heuristics' and 'find all macros'. I can't remember the article off the top
of my head but it was in the NAI knowledgebase

Hopefully that should resolve the problem

I was told that this was not a virus and that it was a problem with the
detection message where no detection name is given, is an
error message that is given by the engine and misinterpreted by the GUI
product, not a detection by the DAT files. The files are now in
quarantine, so can i send out the file or is it infected with a virus?

I am running groupshield exchange.

This is the message we received in the event viewer:
"The file testing.doc is infected with '_'. Detected with scan engine
4.1.60 DAT version 4.1.4181 from user Exchange running groupshield
4.5.572.182 OAS"

RE: Errors uninstalling Groupshield 4.5

2001-12-13 Thread Neil Ferguson

Steve

I've had
the same issues. You can download an installer cleaner from Microsoft - can't
remember the link off hand though it was easy to find. If that fails (like it
did with me) then its regedit time - remove every reference to Mcafee and
reboot. Groupshield's uninstall is pretty much
useless.

The
permissions problem you've had I experienced as well. You need to use Q261092 as
a reference and adapt it accordingly

Hope this
helps

  uninstalling Groupshield 4.5
  Hello,

Myself and a colleague are trying to remove
Groupshield 4.5 from a Windows 2000 SP2 server thats running Exchange 5.5, as
we are trying to convert the virus protection software to another
package.  I was able to remove Netshield ok.  However, my colleague
tried to remove Groupshield from the Add/Remove programs tab.  The
program came back and said we had to remove it using the setup.exe file used
  to install the program.

When we run setup.exe, setup goes into
maintenance mode like it is supposed to, and we can click Remove All.
However, when the uninstall routine starts, it errors out with two error
messages. The first one says "DAPI Error : - Unable to find
object /o=(Org name)/ou=(OU)/cn=(first cn name etc)".  All we can do is
click ok.  Then another message appears from the installer, saying that
it can not determine which version of Exchange we are running, 5.5 or
2000.   We are logged in as Administrator (not the exchange
administrator account - will this make a difference ?)

Has anyone else encountered this ?  Of
course, Network Associates does not offer per-incident support.  We are
trying to remove the product, and I don't want to pay out $800.00 for a
support contract just to get support to remove the product.  I have
searched both Mcafee's knowledge base, and Google.com to no avail.
Any ideas, advice etc would really be appreciated.

Does anyone know how to remove Groupshield 4.5
  manually ?

  Thanks,

No, but I have noticed that running the SDAT's can sometimes override your settings and put them back to the default. Noticed that the last time I ran the latest SDAT. Someone else on this list has mentioned this before as well - that's why I always check the on-demand / access settings after updates have been run, just in case...

Martin,

I had this issue with my ISP - apparently many do use it. A lot of inbound / outbound SMTP traffic was being denied by the firewall. I found by allowing inbound traffic on this port from my public IP address and mapping it to my Exchange Server IP the problem went away.

Subject: Port 113

I am noticing a load of blocked port 113 attempts in my FW log since we have
started moving to Exch server.
I read the stuff below and wonder if anyone else is doing this?

How port 113 can cause problems with your email
One system that still regularly attempts to use Authd is sendmail, a very
popular mail server. It will try to establish the userid of a user
initiating a connection to send mail. While it not requires a successful
reply to function, it will wait up to 5 minutes in its default configuration
for a reply from Authd.
Many firewalls are setup by default to not reply at all to connection
attempts. This will make sendmail wait the specified timeout duration before
accepting any mail. If you instead have the firewall reply with a
'connection rejected' message, the mail server will stop waiting and process
your mail right away.
So if you installed a firewall and have noticed that your email service has
gotten sluggish, see if there is a correlation between your sending mail and
your firewall logging accesses to port 113. If so, try opening up port 113
on your firewall so that the mail server will be happy.

Karen /

Thanks for
your help. Managed to work out what it was - Groupshield had managed to remove /
corrupt all of the permissions for the various objects with Exchange Admin,
hence the 'I'm not going to let you do anything type errors!' Had to manually
remove Groupshield from the registry, add all of the permissions required for
Exchange, reinstall my AV software (and reconfigure it...). Everything
works fine now. Definitely going for a beer tonight..

Morning,

Do you
have a firewall, does your ISP, do the recipients? More often than not
problems with attachments seem to come from firewalls configured by the
Muppets, basically, from what I've experienced, certain firewalls are left
in their default config which will deny everything - it doesn't sound like
it's your problem, sounds like the recipients ISP is having a bad hair day.
Give them a call to check, as long as you're certain that everything is
leaving your domain as it should (i.e. with attachments)

I have been watching this with great interest.
We are having the same issues here. We are using Outlook 98. All else is the
same. Does anybody have a solution to any of
  this?

Not on my end.  All of mine use Outlook 2000 for
people that are actually on my network (IE in the
office) and OE for a plant down the road that isn't hooked in.
  Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT 4.0 SP5.

I have the same problem except that the user's are using
Outlook Express to POP into the system.
Unfortunately this is the only way at the moment I can get them into their e-mail effectively.

I'd guess that those who are not receiving them have the
Outlook Security update installed or they are
being blocked at their mail server.

  Hi all,
  We're running Exch5.5 SP4 and the security roll-up for
  IIS4. Thats running on NT4SP6a
Now when we send an email with an attachment (jpg, excel,
word,...) some are receiving some not??

I tried with a CC to [EMAIL PROTECTED]  and everything
comes back to us. (with attachments).
Can there still be a problem at our side? Or can I say
that every problem is at the other side
  (receiver)?
  Thanks.

Title: RE: Attachments lost and not

Morning,

Do you
have a firewall, does your ISP, do the recipients? More often than not problems
with attachments seem to come from firewalls configured by the Muppets,
basically, from what I've experienced, certain firewalls are left in their
default config which will deny everything - it doesn't sound like it's your
problem, sounds like the recipients ISP is having a bad hair day. Give them a
call to check, as long as you're certain that everything is leaving your domain
as it should (i.e. with attachments)
