RE: Welcome message for new users

2002-05-19 Thread Neil Raggett

There is another option (I would really say it's a good one but hey)...

Write the message you want to send to users and send it to yourself.
Save the message as WELCOME.MSG and replace the WELCOME.MSG on each of
your client machines (Do a search on for it as I think the location
varies between Office versions).

That way when outlook would normally create the default welcome message,
it will create your one instead.

Neil.

How
does exchange store the exchange folder views? Arn't these stored in
'special' messages (of some sort) in the actual mailbox. If this is the
case, this is where the space/message count could be.

  I am

console and look at the Private Information Store-Mailbox resources, I see
mailboxes with items in them, but when I try to retrieve the mail in those
mailboxes (either through OWA or standard POP), the mailboxes appear to be

  What

RE: Live Online backup - Guru question ?

2002-03-18 Thread Neil Raggett

We don't use incremental backups, but a few reasons I can think of...

Back-up time - You might have a policy which says backups may only be run
during off-hours.
Network Bandwidth - The network may become slow (which could cause problems
during office hours).
Space available on the nightly backups (You might not have enough dec's to
do a full backup without changing tapes at 3am).

Neil.

P.S. Make sure when your backing up the store and directory your using the
backup exec exchange agent. I was discussing with the admin of a another
network before we merged that network into ours and he assured me he was
backing up the stores and directory on his exch55 box and he had the
exchange agents loaded. When I actually checked before massacring his
server, he had the db's checked in the file level (which would not be backed
up as they were in use) - Hence he had never done a actual exchange backup.
A few words came to mind.

So now I've thought this through why ever do incremental backups of an

Yup Exchange does it and Backup Exec supports it. As long as you select
the Microsoft Exchange Store in Backup Exec, you are fine. Don't do a
file backup or a mailbox backup, neither will fully protect your system.

Subject: Live Online backup - Guru question ?

I recent read (I think it was part of the Microsoft disaster recovery
white paper) that

Exchange Server has built-in support for online backups directly to
tape. The server doesn't have to be shut down, nor do users have to log
off

Is this correct?

I'm using Backup exec with the agents etc and I can backup the whole of
my exchange server without logging the users off it!

Obviously in the event of a server failure any messages between when the
backup was taken and the next backup would be lost but the user would
not be effected by the backup running!

The reason I ask is that I have a client whom receives emails 24*7 auto
exports them to another system which turns the email into a job. They
get email notification of the new job which they need to access 24*7.

The question I would like to ask is what are the ramifications of this. I

site name.

Are there any more little beauties waiting for me?

One of the requirements of doing an Exchange restore (As I understand it) it
is having the same Server name. Hence, doing the restore on the live
network to a test server would prove difficult.

I do remember reading somewhere that you can restore the Information store
(Not the directory) to an alternate server, but I would imagine that as the
directory isn't being restored one of the effects would be loss of
permissions (Like your describing). I have never tried this though and so

Neil,

Well, the test exchange server, is on our actual domain, it is just not part
of the site. We use it to restore mailboxes when needed, so the SAM should
be fine. Under permissions, nothing is listed, not even the Account Unknown
entries, it is like we are not backing up/able to restore something, like
the directory that might be preventing us from getting the permissions
transferred over.

Simple - Build a BDC on the live network, disconnect it from the live

I was

Seagate Analysis or Crystal reports is propably worth a look for the

RE: Brick Level backups using Veritas 8.6

2002-02-24 Thread Neil Raggett

The only point I would make in addition to the below with regards to Deleted
Item recovery on all folders is that it doesn't work on Contacts, Notes,
Tasks and Colander items (Not sure about Journal items).

I've done about 2 restores in about the last year, once for an accidental
deletion of a mailbox and another for a load of 'hard' deleted contacts.

He advises waiting a month before mailbox deletion, I prefer using exmerge
to copy the mailbox to an archive area (We leave it there for a month or 2)
along with a copy of the users profile and home dir and then delete the
account. This way you have an exact copy of any data you delete and keeps
everything tidy.

I also don't advertise the availability of the recover deleted items option.
Generally the user doesn't need to know about it and the ones that do often

Hello,

Does anyone do brick level backups? I know there are many disadvantages of
doing this especially since the fact that you are doing double the work and
your tape could run for several hours more than if you were to just backup
the IS and Dir but can a brick level backup cause problems with your logs
and cause your Exchanges services like the IS service to fail? Just
curious.

We have a client that insists on doing it this way. Although in my brick
level scheme im only backing up the Inbox and no other Outlook folder. I
just want to maek sure that by doing brick-level im not going to further
mess their exchange server.

Thanks,

I've done about 2 restores in about the last year, once for an accidental

I read that it couldn't do that, but I'm wondering why anyone cares to do
that? If you are worried about viruses being transmitted via ZIP files, it
seems that you should just block ZIP. I mean, are you just trying to
prevent the users from sending ANY EXE files back and forth? Basically the
only reason I'm letting ZIPs through are so people CAN actually transmit
legitimate files through and a good way to force them to use some form of
compression.

One thing I still kinda wish 3.8 could do is block an .EXE in a Zip. I tried
it, and it lets it through. I know I could block all Zip files, but that's
not quite what I was looking for.

By the way, if anyone else uses Martin's list and ScanMail 3.8 and has this
same problem, this should save you some time. Don't forget I've added *.REG
to the list.

File extensions to block:

ns;isp;js;jse;jtd;msc;msi;msp;mst;ocx;oft;ovl;pcd;pif;pl;plx;scr;sct;sh;shb;

OK, since everyone has been talking about this and Antigen lately, I'll add
this.

I just got off the phone with Trend's tech support and apparently there is
an issue with blocking file extensions. I noticed that SYS and VBS files
were not being blocked, even though they were on my list (or Martin's list I
should say, although I don't think he had REG on his list and I do have it).

Anyway, the reason is because it is now performing the true file type
scanning. I've already tested this and it does work. For example, I'm not
blocking ZIP, so renaming a ZIP to EXE, which I am blocking, will let it
through just fine because it knows it is a ZIP. So, in turn, it registers
VBS, BAT, my SYS (which was really a text file renamed) as TXT files, which
aren't being blocked.

The fix is to list them in the file name box (the box right below the
blocked extension list) as *.vbs;*.bat;*.sys, etc. Seems to work so far.
So I guess to be safe, I'm going to add all of Martin's extensions to both
boxes.

Hope this helps someone else.

Dear all,

Just a quick one I'm sure somebody will be able to point me in the right
direction for.

I am currently 'messing' around with a development server (NT 4.0) which I
am trying to restore our Exchange Server to. I join it to our network as a
BDC and then take it off-line, restore the backup thus demonstating my
ability to deal with a disaster and then also practice upgrading to 2000
e.t.c

I am experiencing problems restoring the database but this is another
issue involving the wonderful Arcserve.

My problem is that every time I botch up a restore it basically corrupts
the Exchange installation and I don't really seem to able to remove it
properly. Therefore a new resote won't work, I can't re-run setup so I
keep re-installing the server!

Basically the state I have at the moment is only 4 Exchange services
installed, if I run setup (to hopefully get the uninstall option) it
doesn't detect the current installation and attempts a new one which then
fails! I think what I am asking is does anyone know where to find the
article for manually doing a total removal of Exchange 5.5?

Thanks, James.

Hello,

Currently NAV on our Exchange 5.5 sp4 server is blocking the following
extentions: vbs, exe, nws, eml, mp3, scr, com, bat, pif

Do you recommend other extensions that should be blocked for added security
and to prevent virus attacks?

Thanks,

Another good guide for what extensions to block is the list that your normal
AV checker suggests for default files to scan.

RE: Applying Mailbox Limits....After the Fact

2002-02-15 Thread Neil Raggett
Title: Applying Mailbox LimitsAfter the Fact

Have
you considered the Mailbox Manager service in the exch support tools (SP2 or
later I think)?
You
can set things like Delete Items over 1MB after 30 days or empty items older
than 30 days from the Deleted items folder.

Don't
use it myself (In fact only first looked at it yesterday), but you could look at
that.

  Mailbox LimitsAfter the Fact
Does anyone know of a utility or script that can do
the following under Exchange 5.5, Win2k Server SP2, About 250 or so
  recipients:
I would like to apply mailbox limits at 275mb warn
and 300mb disable send. The twist is
that for existing users over 300mb I would like their limit warning to be 75mb
more than what they currently have and their disable send limit to be 100mb
  more than what they have.
Is there a utility or script available that will
scan my mailboxes and apply these limits? Maybe I haven't figured out the
correct wording yet but I can't find any reference to this on the web or
  technet.

RE: X400 mail to address exposed

2002-02-14 Thread Neil Raggett

Haven't seen this (I think) before, it could just be a foreign systems
internal addressing - Were the names you changed that of your system or the
senders system?

I use x400 addressing quite a lot (too much for my liking) and this isn't a
x400 address.
An x400 address would look something like - 'c=gb;o=org;a=
;p=prmd;o=org;ou1=ser;cn=name'.

Subject: X400 mail to address exposed

My Exchange 5.5 SP4 NT4sp6 IMS received this Internet email from (names
changed for security):
[EMAIL PROTECTED].

I have never seen this information in emails coming in from the Internet.
Normally the reply to: and mail to: address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Is
this normal? Is the sender's server using the x400 address as the reply to:
address? From an Exchange security standpoint, it seems like this address
gives away the organizational structure of the Exchange server.

There is only one Exchange server in my Org with no connections to other
Exchange servers- as far as I know. If my server is indeed making this type
of connection with another server, how can I research it and stop it? All
Internet email in and out of my Org should be across the IMS only.

Thanks for any light on this topic.
