Subject: GFI - Ugh

Interesting experience this week that I thought I would share.

We use GFI MailEssentials and MailSecurity. Not really thrilled with it, but
when Sunbelt merged into GFI, we ended up going down that route.

The other day, I get an email saying our maintenance will expire in 60 days. I
follow the link and renew for a year.

I then get an email from a GFI sales rep saying that what I had renewed wasn't
correct. They would send me a new quote. They did. It was higher than what I'd
ordered from their original email.

I told them I'd have to look at some other options but may not going through
with the renewal. Then they tell me there are no refunds, so I will lose the
$503 they originally charged me for the product I renewed from the link they
sent in their email that was incorrect.

What a bait-and-switch! "Here, renew this. Thanks. We have your money. Oops, we
sent you the wrong renewal quote. The actual one is higher. No refunds." I
doubt Sunbelt would have ever done that.

Anyway, who has a good suggestion for anti-spam products that would integrate
well in an Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2007 environment?

Thanks all,

Evan

Global Server and Server OS Reliability Survey

2012-08-20 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
Guys,

You have been great over the years with this survey, and we compare each year
to the last.

It would be fantastic if you could take a few minutes and fill out this year's
survey ! We give

away an iPad and an iPod, and the odds are pretty darn good.

ITIC’s 2012 Global Server Hardware and Server OS Reliability survey is live!
This survey consists of multiple choice questions and one essay question. It
polls corporations on their satisfaction with the reliability, uptime and
security of the major server hardware and server OS platforms. It also gauges
customer satisfaction with the pricing, service and support you receive from
your vendors. Are the servers and server operating systems performing up to
expectations? Are they too expensive or too hard to use? Tell us what you think.

We know that you’re busy. This survey should take only a few minutes to
complete. All responses are confidential. The survey is for informational
purposes only. No one will call or Email you with any sales pitches.

We are giving away a free iPad and a free iPod to the survey respondents who
provide the most insightful response to the final essay question. Be sure to
leave your Email address along with your comment within the Essay question
response. Once the survey is finalized, we'll publish the Executive Summary
and survey highlights here. To further show our appreciation, anyone who
completes the survey can get a complimentary copy of the Report once it's
published by Emailing me at: ldi...@itic-corp.com. Here’s the survey link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LQHRYQW

Thanks in advance for your participation. We look forward to hearing from you

Warm regards,

Stu

Hi Guys, a 30-second, one-question survey - chance to win a $100 Amazon.com Gift Card

2012-05-15 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
Hi !

I have a 30-second, one-question survey for you with the option to enter a
sweepstakes for a
chance to win a $100 Amazon.com Gift Card! (The odds are going to be very good
with this one.)

A well-known security company is soon coming out with a business antivirus
product that's cloud-based.
You will have a cloud-based management console and a small-footprint agent on
the endpoint. Managing
antivirus through the cloud saves you from buying or expanding hardware,
install a console etc. The
small-footprint agent eliminates bloatware, and doesn’t slow down the
end-user's workstation. We are
looking for the best tagline for this exciting new product and would love your
help. Which tagline (phrase)
do you like best to describe this new product?

- Cloud-managed antivirus
- Cloud-managed antivirus & anti-spyware
- Cloud-managed antivirus with a small footprint-
- Cloud-managed, small footprint antivirus
- Other (I have a better one)

The deadline is Friday May 18 so please so this right away? Thanks so much !!!

* My New Book Is Out: CYBERHEIST

2011-04-29 Thread Stu Sjouwerman

  * My New Book Is Out: CYBERHEIST

Hi All, I'm very excited to announce my new book: CYBERHEIST. (Keep
on reading for the special ExchangeList subscriber offer at the end
of this item):

Why I wrote it? To increase executive level awareness that the bad guys
have moved from simple identity theft to full fledged robbery of
corporate bank accounts (non-profits are targets too), using phishing
and social engineering.

Most business owners, C-level executives and people in HR functions
simply do not know this yet, but cyberheists are happening right now
as we speak. Organized cyber crime has developed into a very well funded,
sophisticated and technically skilled operation, and their results are
very damaging. Unfortunately, management still has a false sense of
security. With the rapid proliferation of social media and mobile
computing, -people- are the new perimeter!

The threat is there, and getting worse. Just have a look at this Google
map overlaid with cases, and that is only the tip of the iceberg, there
are hundreds more unreported cyberheist cases:
http://www.knowbe4.com/resources/cyberheist-map/

So, do you need some ammo to get more budget for your IT security? You
need state-of the art endpoint protection, and I strongly recommend
VIPRE for that, combined with end-user security awareness training.
Please either forward this link to management and tell them to buy a
copy. Or better yet, if you really want to make sure they get the message,
get a copy yourself and give it to them. It's enlightening, and written
for both IT and non-IT people. Everything is explained in normal terms
to make sure we don't put anyone to sleep.

Please do me a favor and tell all your friends? Thanks so much in advance!
Oh, and check out the reviews written by your peers. (Thanks for your
kind words, you know who you are!)

Here is the paperback Version

dp/098348/

This is the Kindle Version:
http://www.amazon.com/Cyberheist-financial-American-businesses-ebook/

BUT...I have saved the best for last! Subscribers of ExchangeList are

one chapter as a teaser. This is the whole darn book! Yes, you have to
register, and you will receive CyberheistNews twice a month, but this

Guys, I have a favor to ask...

2010-11-06 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
You all know that I wear a few different hats. I'm still writing
WServerNews for GFI (Sunbelt) and I am the List Admin for these
forums.

But also, I'm firing up a new outfit that will help you to keep
your networks safer by training end-users from infecting their
workstations. So here is the favor I'm asking, and thanks so much
in advance for your help!

(I promise that these requests will be very, very rare.)

We have just finished Release Candidate 1 of the new Internet Security
Awareness Training (ISAT). The estimated training time for average
end-users is about 20 minutes. For advanced users it will take less
than 15 min.

Two points:

1) The main goal of this training is to have end-users become aware of the
various social engineering scams that are being attempted, and to prevent
a cyber heist. The idea is to make it abundantly clear that they first
need to stop, look and think before they click. The first 10 multiple
choice questions are relatively simple and are meant to drill in this
point until it really comes home.

2) The secret sauce of this training is the "Dynamic Content Updates(tm)"
feature. It updates the multiple choice questions daily, based on active
phishing attacks going on at that time. End users are encouraged to do
this training once per quarter, and part of the program is that they will
get sent regular simulated phishing attacks to test them for application.
Clicks are registered and a fail triggers an immediate short remedial
training session.

My question to you:

Could you step through it, make your observations, and fill out the 1-minute
separate survey at the second link? This way we can do the last QA cycle
before we go gold.

The deadline for this is Friday Nov 10, and your input is highly appreciated.
Participants that fill out the survey and leave their email address, will be
entered in a sweepstake for a new XBOX Kinect!

The ISAT Training link is here.

The QA Survey is here:

RE: Letter from Sunbelt CEO: GFI Acquires Sunbelt Software

2010-07-13 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
 Hi Guys!

Do not worry about VIPRE. On the contrary. Starting Sunbelt was great, and it
has
been an excellent 16-year run. But I truly thought that Sunbelt needed a
partner
with much deeper pockets and way more resources than my partner and I could
bring
to the party. Both Sunbelt and GFI are going great guns. We are doing fabulous
in the US, but not so well in Europe. GFI does fabulous in Europe. The two
together
are really a very good match. And you may not know that they have -substantial-
financial backing. All in all, this will give VIPRE the resources it needs to
expand
even more, and become an even better product than it is! I'll continue to
write the
newsletter, and play a new game as well.

In the mean time, you will still see me as the List Admin and kill threads now
and
then. LOL.

Bad DAT (5958). There's an extra.dat the suppresses the false positive, but if
you can't download it

If the PCs are in a reboot cycle, type "shutdown -a" from a command prompt.

Access the VirusScan Console, Tools, Rollback DATs.

I don't manage our AntiVirus suite here so I don't know the requirements for
this specific fix to work. We use EPO to manage and can verify this has worked

SURVEY: Is Virtualization Helping Or Hurting Uptime?

2010-04-13 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
Hi Guys, we'd be thrilled if you can help out with this one...

SURVEY: Is Virtualization Helping Or Hurting Uptime?

Does your network deliver acceptable level of uptime? Have you virtualized your
environment and if so, has virtualization enabled your organization to achieve
better economies of scale and improved server and application availability? Is
your server infrastructure getting the job done? Sunbelt Software and ITIC
would like your experience. We've created a new survey.

The questions are straightforward and it should take less than 5 minutes to
complete. All responses are kept confidential. And once again, anyone who
completes the survey is eligible to win one of two (2) free personalized iPods!
To be eligible to win the iPods you must leave your Email address along with
your comment in the final question comment box. Here's the link:
http://www.wservernews.com/100412-Virtualization-Survey

As always, we will post an Executive Summary of the results and survey
highlights in this newsletter once we've polled all the results. Anyone who
completes the survey is also eligible to obtain a free copy of the Report by
emailing Laura directly at ldi...@itic-corp.com. Thanks in advance and we look
forward to your input!

Stu, as you're aware this spammer is re-signing up on this list (and
strangely, only this list) every day with a different address.
Obviously it's automated so removing members does little to prevent
future spam from reaching the list. .Are you thinking about another

RE: Filtering Spam

2009-03-12 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
Hi Daniel,

Just some additional points to keep in mind. Ninja is
tightly integrated with Exchange. That does have a few
advantages, first of all you are able to create a spam
mailbox right in Outlook and all spam gets filtered right
in that box with the major advantage your users do not
have to go somewhere else (web-interface) to check
on quarantined email. Second, they can create their
own allow- and blocklists, so determine what should
go through. All this was done to keep your admin time
to a minimum - actually half compared to other product.
And that is worth something. See this white paper by

Hey,

I'm looking for a good open-source/free product that we can use in
conjuction with our exchange server to filter out spam. We did have
mailwasher but due to the opensource version being crap and the
enterprise version costing as much as putting an entire detriot high
school through college, I'm looking for another free/open-source spam
product that actually works.

Ideas?

- Fast install, fast-config, with instant, easy to read reports
- Scan and analyze an entire domain and/or a single machine
- Select or ignore vulnerabilities via a brand new, simple
"point-and-click" GUI
- Detailed analysis of the name, description, and risk level of

RE: Exchange Failover Product.. Stu's perspective

2008-05-14 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
There are some essential differences between SCR and Double-Take:

Standby Continuous Replication uses asynchronous log shipping and reply
to create a backup "standby" database on a target Exchange server.
Unlike CCR, which relies on clustering and provides high availability,
SCR sends data from a standalone or clustered Exchange server to a
standalone Exchange server and provides no failover capabilities. SCR
shares some of the same limitations as LCR and CCR and introduces some
new limitations.

Some items to consider about SCR:

SCR provides no failover. SCR is designed to create a standby database
that matches the source database, similar to LCR but with the database
residing on a separate server. To provide high availability and DR,
Microsoft recommends combining CCR and SCR.

SCR recovery is complex. The SCR recovery process is a series of manual
steps executed on the command line to bring the target database online.
This is a complex process compared to the ease-of-use with
DoubleTakeAM's automatic or push-button failover and failback
capabilities.

SCR is not real-time protection of Exchange data. SCR works by
shipping log files locally and applying them to a second copy of the
Exchange database. It is not real-time replication.

SCR replication is delayed. There is an enforced delay of 50 log files
with SCR replication. This means that 50 log files must be replayed
into the target datastore before the target server can be brought online
for recovery.

You must use a single database per storage group. When a storage group
has been enabled for SCR, it can only contain a single database. This
prevents you from scaling up by having multiple databases per storage
group. Double-Take does not have this limitation. Here is the link to
download an eval:

http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Business/Double-Take/

Stu

I have not tried 2007 SCR as yet, but have read a lot on it. SCR looks
good, but do you really want to be doing stuff in command line when the
boss is standing over you wondering when email is going to be back on
line? The thing is, if you go to 2007 then you need to pitch your
servers for 64 bit, and get the appropriate OS as well.

If you are just wanting to get your existing data to an existing standby
box, then Double Take is the way to go. The software will configure your
target server so that all of the appropriate services are set to manual
and stopped. When you failover it will update AD, and add the SPN for
the source server to the target server, plus make any required changes
in DNS. Users only have to restart Outlook if they were signed in at the
time of the failover. And it can be controlled with one mouse click as
opposed to having to type correctly when the poo hits the fan.

DoubleTake (as someone else mentioned) and NeverFail are the typical

MessageOne is a typical 3rd party provider providing message continuity.

However, I would recommend you upgrade to Exchange 2007 and use LCR or
SCR; which are built into the product.

If you really actually want to do active/passive Exchange clustering,
search on technet.microsoft.com for SCC

the event I lose my active Exchange server. I understand that this can
be accomplished by clustering. Google has a zillion links about
Windows/Exchange clustering so I was hoping the experts here could
recommend a link where it would be a good place to start learning how to
do this.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Environment is W2K3 Servers and Exchange 2003, clients are a mixture of
O2K3 and O2K7...all fully patched.

RE: Sunbelt Announces Ninja Blade - The Barracuda Killer

2008-01-17 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
Michael,

We started out with this first iteration of the GUI, and provide
the basic required features right out of the box. That feature
set will be expanded upon significantly over time and we're happy
to get suggestions. There -will- be a lot more to tweak, but Blade
as it is was put together to have it up and running in 10 minutes.

Let us know what you'd like to see added?

Warm regards,

Stu

I meant to add: mainly was the ability to edit parts of the config -
and not just add/delete. You know - tweak something you already
configured.

Sunbelt Announces Ninja Blade - The Barracuda Killer

2008-01-17 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
Hi All,

Here is one of my infamous, genuine 100% commercial messages ! ;-D

The subject essentially said it all. We built a very high quality
appliance,
with carrier-grade software, using a Dell server. We're quite excited to
be able
to offer this now, in addition to the Ninja Email Security software
product itself.

The pricing is -very- competitive. Check out the microsite we built for
our new 'Blade':

Warm regards,

Stu

PS, If you want to play with the actual interface, you need to fill out
the
'request eval' form, and in the auto-return email will be a link with a
username and password so you can see how it looks. A world of
difference compared to the 'cuda.

Sure you can. Disconnect from the internet.

You need to weigh the costs of the time it takes your users to delete the ones that
get through vs. the time that it takes you to administer the content filter. When the
costs of your time and equipment become greater, you've done too much.

  Hi,

I am looking for a tool to scan an IS for

ExMerge for Windows 2000 is a great tool, but will only scan mailboxes for
