Help!! Exchange unsolved

2002-06-20 Thread SysAdm

Hi All,

I don't know any further apart from
ringing Microsoft support or rebuilding the server (yuk, first server in site
etc.). Hope that maybe one of you has encountered a similar problem and can shed
some light.

Status: Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT 4.0
SP6a (Dell PowerEdge 2300). Approx. 150 mailboxes, IS priv = 5.2 GB. Latest
rebuild of box 18 mths ago. Worked beautyfully, but now:

1) Doesn't synchronize offline
folders properly, especially Inbox is empty. Followed steps in Synchronisation
Error log, to no avail. This occurs for about 2/3rds of all mailboxes and seems
to be getting worse.
2) Same applies to archiving and

3) Exmerging causes problems too (if
we want to backup a mailbox before deleting it). Have to run exmerge on large
mailboxes several times and will in the end have to give up on a few e-mails.
The main problem appears to be caused by e-mails with attachments.
4) If domain admins or the mailbox
owner are trying to move or copy e-mails with attachments between folders
> displays following message 'cannot move the items, already moved or
deleted, or access denied'.
5) Some reminder problems 'cannot
dismiss or postpone the reminder because the corresponding item in the folder
you synchronised does not match this item...'
6) And the access speed has come to a
crawl. If you have preview pane enabled, looking even at the tiniest little
e-mail can have a several second delay

Ran Performance Mon. on server, yes
it does have a decent work load but should be alright.

Looked first to me as if the
information store is having some hick ups, ran Isinteg alltests on it, no errors
but 235 warning re. MailboxContentCount.

Restored information store to a
backup server to play with it and voila, all of the above problems have
disappeared.

Does that mean that there are no
problems with the database but that I should look at the Exchange installation
or hardware Any ideas sooo wellcome.

Sorry for the lengthy e-mail. Hope
that somebody out there can point me in the right direction though. Thanks heaps
in advance.

Dagmar

RE: Security Assistance (Urgent)

2002-03-04 Thread SysAdm

Sounds like it might be an old SirCamm Issue.

We used to receive several thousands of e-mails per day to a recipient that
didn't exist but had our domain name; choked the mail server completely.
Contacted a few of the people that were sending (and were located in
Australia). Some were aware that they had a virus but hadn't managed to get
rid of it, others were completely surprised - their antivirus checks came up
with nothing. They didn't even know that they were sending e-mails and had
never heard of the recipient they were sending to. We still receive these
e-mails today but have given up and simply block them at the firewall (has
been going on for months now).

The messages are coming from this company and other companies to someone
that we don't even know. The person in question notified us that he
received several e-mails from two people from our company. Viruses were
checked on the 2 individuals PC and on the Exchange box (none encountered).

Are you sure this is spam? I've seen a similar situation where some offline
users keep receiving the same messages over and over again. Is this what is
happening?

Which version of Exchange do you have and where is your smtp configuration
sitting. You need to check the configuration of smtp and check your
authentication and delivery restrictions. I'm being rather simplistic here,
but I believe there is some steps on this on the swynk archives on how to
do this. http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp

RE: Certain messages stuck in IMS

2001-10-29 Thread SysAdm
Title: Message

They
have nothing to do with relaying but with spam e-mails directed to recipients
with your domain name but invalid recipient name. Essentially they are NDR's and
the originator is blank 'cause there is no such recipient in your organisation.
Since spammers very often have 'masked' e-mail addresses the NDR's have trouble
finding their intended address, therefore sitting in your IMC queue. Nothing to
worry about. Delete them or don't delete them.

  I
noticed those in our IMS from time to time as well.  Our relay is closed,
so I don't think it can be spammers attempting to use our Exchange server as
an open relay.  I've never been sure why they show up.  Anyone
know how they get into the IMS to begin with?

RE: weird exchange/outlook problem

2001-10-04 Thread SysAdm

Had the same problem some time ago. Turned out that the meeting requests
included a location of which the 'terminated' employee had been in charge.
Somebody else was looking after the resource yes, but if you just chose from
the 'Location' drop down menu instead of 'inviting' the resource afresh you
got those NDR's.

Might not apply to you at all, but is a thought that might help you to
figure out what's going on.

Delegates are client-side configurations so deleting the users mailbox would
not remove her from any client's delegation list.

I will have to check this again, but I don't think he had any delegates set
up. In addition, her account was deleted, so I don't know how it could
still be in there if she was set up as a delegate. But I will definitely
check.

Check his client to see if the admin's account is setup as a delegate to his
account. You can have all meeting requests forwarded automatically to your
delegate so that is probably what is happening.

Tools --> Options --> Delegates tab.

Hopefully someone out there has some ideas about this. Here's the scenario:

NT 4.0 SP6a Server w/Exchange 5.5 SP3
User with 9x (still, I know, but soon to be win2k) and outlook 2000 - the
user is actually our site manager and VP.

About 6 months ago, his previous administrative assistant left the company.
She had been set up with permissions to access his mailbox, and also had
"send on behalf of" permissions. Her user account and mailbox have been
long since deleted. Here comes the weird part. Ever since she left,
whenever a meeting request or appointment is sent to this site manager, a
delivery failure notification is sent back saying that the mail could not be
delivered to the following recipient: . We
have searched and have not been able to find anything we could do short of
moving his emails to a .pst, deleting the mailbox and recreating and
reimporting his emails. If anyone has other ideas, that would be extremely
helpful. If more information is needed, I will strive to provide it.

Title: AnitiVirus Scan error

Oh
yes, want the answer to this one too. Has started only a few weeks ago but now
at least 50% of the NAV notifications are 'Scan Engine Failures'.

Thought that in our case the start of these error
messages might have coincided with the application of SP4 and changing from MAPI
only to MAPI/VAPI mode. Did you do by any chance something
similar?

We've been getting a lot of these from various servers all
