Re: Exchange 2000

2001-09-07 Thread Tom . H . Burke

Same AD Forest. The Forest can contain multiple Domains, and indeed multiple
Trees, but it's got to be one Forest. This is because the Global Address List is
drawn from the Global Catalogue, and the 'Global' bit means 'across the whole
Forest'.

There are meta-directory products that allow you to add names from another GC to
yours (and vice-versa), but I've no experience of them and they sound
complicated.

So - you can't have multiple Exchange 2000 Orgs in the same Forest; and a single
Exchange 2000 Org can't span multiple Forests.

Subject: Exchange 2000

Hello All,

A quick question. To enable exchange2000 servers to be in the same exchange
organisation, do they also have to be in the same Windows2000 domain
structure if you are using active directory? Or is it possible to have them
in two separated active directory domain structures and still be in the same
exchange organisation, but in separated sites?

Thanks.

Re: Authentication attempt failed

2001-09-06 Thread Tom . H . Burke

It looks like it could be a nameserver for iim.co.uk (hence the 'ns' bit of the
server name) but for some reason it's trying to come in on port 25, thus
exercising your SMTP server.

There is an 'iim.co.uk'; they claim to be a 'full service design' company.
They'e in Berkshire. Is that local to you?

EventID: 4185

Authentication attempt (AUTH LOGIN) from ns.iim.co.uk failed: unable to

I've checked with all of my users and no one is corresponding with anyone in

Re: Exchange Tasks in AD

2001-09-04 Thread Tom . H . Burke

Isn't this the difference between an Exchange Mailbox and a Mail-enabled
account? For example, if you were using AD for all staff, but a mix of 50%
Exchange and 50% Domino, you'd use the second option for the Domino users. This
way the Exchange users would see the Domino users in the GC.

RE: Exchange Tasks in AD

2001-09-04 Thread Tom . H . Burke

Where are you seeing these? They're not in the dialogue box that Exchange Tasks
takes you into But the Establish Email Address dialogue box is definitely to
create a non-Exchange email addy - it could be, as Neil said, an external
address, or it could be, as we use it, for address on a non-Exchange internal
system.

Of course, in the latter case you also need the relevant Connector set up before
it'll work.

Ok..., so how do the settings for Incoming mail size, and the options
for Message restrictions work. If the users mail account was in a
different system, surely these option would have no meaning. Also, in
that case why not just use the option for email address in the general
tab?

Or is it that this should function as a forwarding method, mail is
delivered to address on the E-Mail Addresses tab and then forwarded on
to the address on the Exchange General tab.

Confused and its only Tuesday.

RE: Exchange Tasks in AD

2001-09-04 Thread Tom . H . Burke

Ah, but when? This in fact what we're doing - moving from Netware to AD, and
from Domino to Exchange 2k. There is an argument that says you do the Directory
migration first, so everyone's NDS account is converted to an AD acount all at
once. Then you do the Domino to E2k migration over a timescale. During that
migration some users would be on E2k, some would still be on Domino, but all
would have an AD account. The Domino users would be mail-enabled, and one task
during the migration would be to create their Exchange mailbox.

If this is Ex2K then you must be working in Win2k and AD. This means that users
should be trying to authenticate with their normal logon name password. If
the error message you're getting is about authentication, then the issue of
where the directories actually are hasn't arisen yet - you need to authenticate
first! What messages are you getting in the IIS log when a user tries to
connect? What's the Directory Security settings in the Internet Service Manager?

I use OWA and Internet Explorer i.e.: http://front-end/exchange/user1,

I also open Internet Services Manager of the FE Server, and discover
that inside the Default Web Site -public, Exchange, Exadmin appear as RED

M:\exchange_server\public folders, etc. However, all of these are on the
BE server and it is not finding them. I have followed the Microsoft
whitepaper for FE/BE configuration to the letter.

What is it that I am missing? Please help .

Re: Front-end/Back-end ???

2001-08-30 Thread Tom . H . Burke

OK. I only have OWA working in a test lab, but this is what we do: we set the
homepage in the browser Properties to 'http://servername/exchange'. With
Integrated Windows Authentication, what happens is that the browser
automatically passes the credentials through to IIS when challenged, and there
is no need to complete an authentication dialogue box.

I think it's worth persisting with checking the logs, esp. the IIS logs. You
mention that when you untick Basic Authentication, you get passed through to the
backend server, and then get an Error 404. This sounds as if authentication is
working in that case; ie, authentication at the front end IIS server. The
location of the IIS log files are specified in the Server properties (that's
IIS) - in Internet Services Manager right-click the 'Default Web Site', select
Properties, select the Web Site tab, and make sure that the following values are
set:- Enable Logging is ticked, and the logging format is set to 'W3C Extended
Log File format'. If you've not touched this area before it's likely that the
defaults have been left, in which case the log files will be in
\winnt\system32\logfiles\W3SVC1... They are text files, one per day, and can be
opened by double-clicking. The value of them is that they show the resources
being requested, and who is requesting them. Once you've confirmed that logging
is on, and that you can see the logfiles, try and connect again with Basic
Authentication turned OFF, let the error happen, and then go back and check the
IIS log file. See what's happening. There'll always be an anonymous connection
attempt first - that's the http protocol default behaviour. Thereafter there
should be lines that show the following requests, and who's making them. If the
request is being passed through to the back-end server then you should see the
requests appearing under the name of your user, and the resource they're asking
for. That should tell you that authentication is happeneing, and with what
value, and what's being looked for.

Thanks for the help. Answers are in-line.

Have you tried a few alternatives:-
 a) is it just one user account, or many?
it is all users - domain admin, exchange service account, regular users,
etc.

 b) what happens if you untick 'basic' authentication?
It redirects to my back-end server and says error 404 file not found. The
redirect URL is http://ohca/MBX/USA/user_name; which has me confused
since there is no such path.

 c) presumably the access attempt is being made from a PC on the network? If so
what OS - win95/98/ME/NT/2K? Is the user logged-on to the network from the PC?
User logged on to the network from win2k pro and server machines.

 d) what does the IIS log show for the connection attempt?
Not sure what you mean by this. The event logs still say unknown username
or password.

 e) what URL are you entering in the browser?
Have tried all of the following: //computer_name/exchange,
www.domain_name/exchange, IP address/exchange, and have also added
/user_name to the end of all of those with no luck.

Re: Question with Exchange and AD Setup

2001-08-29 Thread Tom . H . Burke

An E2k organisation has exactly the same boundaries as your AD Forest. Put
simply (possibly even simplistically), the E2k org uses the Global catalogue,
and there is just one of them in an AD Forest, and all user objects in domains
within that forest can access it. So, if the 'child domains' are in the same
forest as your other domains, then they will see all the users (and vice versa).
This is true even if the new domains aren't in the same tree; ie, if your forest
includes domains 'acme.com' and 'sales.acme.com' and you later add a new domain
'roadrunner.org' *to the same forest*, all the users in the three domains will
use the same Global catalogue. If you put 'roadrunner.org' into a different
forest, however, then is uses a different global catalogue (one is created
automatically when you create the forest) and its users won't be able to see the
users in acme.com.

There are metadirectory products that would, in fact, allow visibility between
GCs in different forests, but that's complicated.

Subject: Question with Exchange and AD Setup

Hey Guys Gals,

Quick question, in AD if we create Child Domains will the E2K
servers we setup have all our users corporate wide or just the users in that
Child Domain. Is there any performance advantage to using Child Domains for
E2K? The only connection to the internet is at corporate headquarters so
the Child Domains will have to use that T1 to send emails out. Is this a
sensible option or should we look at making OUs for our satellite sites with
DCs and E2K backup servers. Please let me know.

Thanks

RE: I'm concerned with this (Answer part 2)

2001-08-29 Thread Tom . H . Burke

I wouldn't. Getting started on Sendmail is more of a career choice than a
configuration exercise. There's a reason why the O'Reilly book on it is 700
pages long.

Michele has the right answer - this it the moment to call in your friendly local
Linux consultancy, who will not only solve your immediate problem but will also
be happy to give your Linus box a health check and even provide Linux support
(for a fee, of course). The issue you're currently facing is an example of why
you need this.

This is in no way a criticism, btw - you are an Exchange admin, not a Linux
admin.

Did you do the test on both boxes ex2K and linux relay? If the linux
box alows the relay then you have to dissable it there unless all mail
is forwarded to the ex2k box and not delivered using DNS.

MMC Snap-ins for SMTP NNTP not displaying

2001-08-23 Thread Tom . H . Burke

I've just checked my Internet Information Services MMC on my E2k server (Win 2k
+ SP2, E2k + SP1), and the smtp ntp services aren't showing. There's no 'X'
against them; they just aren't there in the display. It shows the Default Web
Site and Admin Web Site only. I think I need to configure the smtp service to
prevent relaying, and I presume that I do this via this MMC.

I know the relevant components are installed - a) I've been sending receiving
smtp mail to/from the E2k server, and b) selecting Windows 2000 Components in
Add/Remove Software in Control Panel, and checking the details of Internet
Information Services shows that both smtp and nntp are already installed.

Any suggestions?

RE: MMC Snap-ins for SMTP NNTP not displaying

2001-08-23 Thread Tom . H . Burke

Oops - yes, I've found it. Thanks to all who replied. My excuse is that I
haven't done my training course yet; I'm learning most of this from the books as
I go along.

However, I'm not sure about the bit about E2k being 'relay-proof' out of the
box. I've just checked the settings and in the SMTP Properties - Access -
Relay area there are two settings: the 'Only the list below' selected, and the
list is blank (which thus ought to completely prevent relaying) *but* there's
also another tick box at the bottom of the dialogue box with this text: 'Allow
all computers which successfully authenticate to relay, regardless of the list
above', and that tick-box is selected, which would seem to override the first
setting. I don't remember setting this tick box, so my assumption is that this
is how it was when it was installed.

Given that the authentication methods include anonymous, then presumably all
external smtp servers that connect to mine would be able to relay through mine.
What am I not understanding? Does 'allow all computers which successfully
authenticate' not include those that use anonymous?

Q163667 (which admittedly is about OL97) says that the new mail notification is
on a 5-minute cycle. The first new message in a cycle period will trigger the
notification; subsequent new messages within the same 5 minute cycle won't. But
I guess they would suddenly become visible through the actions you describe

Does this fit with your observations?

Subject: Exchange 2000 and Outlook

This may be a quick question.. I Hope..

We are rolling out Exchange 2000 hot and heavy. So far we have migrated
about 4000 5.5 mailboxes.

one issue we have not been able to explain to users and that I have seen in
my own Inbox. This problem did not show up in testing and I did not see
this in my own inbox until I started to load up the new E2K servers with
users.

Ok, so you have Outlook open and you know an email is coming or at least you
are checking to see if any is there before you go to a meeting. You dont
see any messages in Outlook, but if you refresh you screen or click on
another message you get a few emails...? To give you a little more detail,
I can receive an email on my Blackberry 957 WSM (Wireless-Snail-Mail) but
not see it in Outlook until I refresh, click on another message, or wait
long enough for some interval to pass.

I am hoping there is some kind of configuration I can adjust to prevent this
from happening. Around here Execs watch Outlook like its the only thing
they use and most times they know when certain emails are coming or should
be there. Does anyone know why this is, or seen this yourself?

TIA
