Give Help Desk Message Tracking Rigths
Hello all, We have an Exchange 2010 SP1. We are getting some questions about the tracking of messages. I was wondering what I should do to give the Exchange Help Desk security group access to use the message-tracking. If I recall right, it is done with RBAC but I have no idea how... Thnx! Thnx for the answers all, but for what it's worth I'm running 2010 SP1. As far as I understand, all versions of Exchange have this issue with older iOS software. I'm also assuming that you know where the log files are, since you're graphing them. First, get the latest version of logparser from MSFT and install it. Then google for logparser activesync exchange 2003 and take a look at the first 3 or 4 hits - that will tell you who is using activesync, among other things. Then, get grep and wc from sourceforge - either http://unxutils.sf.net or http://gnuwin32.sf.net, and use the unique IDs of the activesync users as parameters. That should get you started. Exchange 2010 - forefront
Hello all, A bit off-topic but worth giving it a try :) We have an Ex2010 environment with an ET server with Forefront protection installed. The is however an option in forefront to do some Recipient Filtering. There are however 2 options: - Enable recipient filtering (as fas as I understand, this is only allowing you to enable blocked recipients) - Only accepts messages to valid recipient from the Global Address List What happens with addresses that are hidden from the GAL? Is it possible to send mail to them externally? I couldn't find an answer on the net. Thnx! RE: Exchange 2007 or 2010
My opinion: yes :) The user experience from 2010 is much better than 2007. Especially the multi browser support along with Outlook anywhere is great. My users love it, first there were some complaints about turning off popimap but eventually they all are happy. I think you'll have to move to 2008R2 if possible. If I remember right there was an article about the performance of 2008 and 2008R2. 2008R2 could handle a lot more users for the same load. I'll have a look if I find it somewhere. Michael, Thnx for the answer! RE: Is an internal open relay allowed?
Jim, sorry to disappoint you but internally we do have an open relay. :( All users (students, teachers, staff, ...) are able to send mail It's an old machine that has been setup many years ago, but it still works. Moving from postfix to exchange is easy to explain if you point the users to the extra advantages they are going to experience. However, telling them that sending mails over our internal relay while using their home address is going to be discontinued is not easy to convince them. Can't speak for the laws where you are but here there could be legal issues involved. For example we have some pretty strict Public Record laws so we would have to add their personal emails sent with that address to our archival system. I would ask them what business use or educational use this home email thing provides. That is always the final test for us. If it does not server educational needs we are not likely to support it. If their home ISP uses SPF (Sender Permitted From) records then their email might bounce. SPF is an addition to your DNS records that says only these servers are allowed to send email for our domain. Not used a lot but often enough I am surprised you have not had issues with that. But let's change your terminology. You are not (I hope) running an open relay. You are allowing authorized users/IP addresses to send email with any from address they want. That is not an open relay, it is a controlled relay and that is allowable. It can be a good solution for traveling people for example. Migrating towards Exchange 2007
Hello all, How did you all migrated towards Exchange? We currently have a Postfix system where all mails are delivered. There is the possibility to make a transport file so certain mailboxes are relay'd to the Exchange server. So far so good. There is a way to go towards the Exchange. But here is where the problems start... So far we don't see a way to go back. If a mail is send from the Exchange to a user who is not migrated to the Exchange yet an Undeliverable message is being send. Is there a way to let the Exchange forward/relay/smtp all mails to users/groups he doesn't know of? That way we can slowly migrate towards the new environment. The problem is that a big-bang migration is not really an option here. Thnx! Tim
Design of a robust Exchange 2k7 environment?
Hello all, We want to move to Exchange 2007 in a few months. Currently we are running a postfix server as primary mail server. Needless to say that shared calendars and so are not possible :-) Exchange and Groupwise where the two system we looked into. Groupwise because we are running a Novell core here. (There will be an active synchronization between Novell e-Dir and MS AD installed by one of our partners) Our environment is not that big: 850 users with an average mail traffic generated by them. While reading and investigating the ideal setup a lot of scenarios passed the revue. The one included here: http://193.190.56.244/~tvandael/Visio-Design_Exchange_2007.pdf is the one I tend to find the most robust for our environment. Since we are using VMWare on our IBM bladecenter and a Netapp SAN connected to it, my opinion was that some of the roles could be running in a VM. Of course are the mailbox server physical ones. Only the config of these is not really clear to me. Any thoughts and recommendations are very much appreciated! Thnx already in advance! Tim
