TRIAL BY FIRE?...scanning .edb files

2001-12-06 Thread Warren Walker
Title: RE: Antigen (Ejaculate IT)

I
would like some clarification by all about installing Trend Micro A/V software
on my Exchange Server.

I
don't relish the thought of installing the software and then finding out
that maybe it wasn't such a good idea.

I was
planning to install the software AND the Exchange component which I believe
scans the .edb files.

Some
of the members of the list suggest that scanning .edb files may not be so
smart.

IS
this such a good idea?

RE: CA becoming more responsive

2001-11-18 Thread Warren Walker

I got an email too. Forcing their employees to watch friends is like
training them to format 360K floppies...in about ten years, they'll be good
at supporting the Windows NT version.

But they are monitoring this list, which means, someone, somewhere from CA
is OUT THERE.

Hi, all,

Thought I'd share with you my notes on this (surprising) new contact i just
had with the Computer Associates VP of Technical Support. Though I had been
a vocal critic of CA's tech support in the past, even back when I was an SE,
I thought I was a lightweight when it came to CA-bashing on this list. So I
was surprised when I got a call from their VP/TS, especially since he was
calling from the east coast.

Anyway, let me just hit the high points for you ...

I told him my main complaints with CA products (ARCserve Inoculan) were
lack of real-time tech support, and the nightmare of RegIT. He agreed. Here
are a few of the things he told me:

- CA has relaxed their registration code, so that now it does not disable
the service.

- They have beefed up their support staff, with an office in India with 100
techies, and now 80%+ of their calls actually get answered by a real tech
support person. Wow! I used to get the take a number, we'll call you back
someday runaround.

- Their knowledge base has been beefed up. I recall it used to be pretty
thin. I haven't checked it out yet.

Well, I was impressed that a high-level guy from CA is actually reaching out
to customers and people in the industry, and trying to respond to
criticisms. Maybe they have turned over a new leaf. I won't have the
opportunity to really evaluate them as we are a Backup Exec / Sophos /
Antigen shop, and being happy with these I'm not changing horses ... but
maybe some of you out there will revisit CA products and give them a fresh
chance.

In the index of Notepad Help, the first five or six alphabetical entries
are the documentation on programming tips for Notepad. This includes
headers and footers and also some information on using Notepad to set up web

Did you know that if you use .LOG as the first line in your notepad document
it inserts the date and time? It creates a great little journal and
automatically inserts the date/time field every time you open it up.

Exchange server Log-on problems

2001-11-01 Thread Warren Walker

I have a client that I haven't been able to install Antivirus s/w to their
Exchange Server 5.5 SP2.

Every time I get to the end of the install of either Neatsuite or NAV, the
installation gets terminated and I get an error message asking me to have
rights act as part of operating system. I've gone through User Manager
and ensured I had Admin rights on Exchange Service account, and everywhere
else I can think of.

Judging from the way mail is acting and some problems we've had with Word, I
suspect Melissa virus is in the Exchange.

I'm using WINNT 4.0, SP6. I don't want to upgrade my Exchange server to SP4
until I resolve these problems...is that prudent?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am a fully signed up member of the CA bashing bandwagon and for the same
reason as William, I have to use their products every day. The ArcserveIT
Exchange agent at our HQ has never ever given me a clean backup in a year,
there is always an error message or some small glitch. I do restore fairly
regularly so it does work (although it's very tricky to restore as well)
but it's so inconsistent.

There is a Service Pack 2 for ArcserveIT 6.61 which I assume you are
using? You can get it from the CA site or I can mail it to you (11MB zip
file), you have to run it on both the backup server and the server with
the agent on it.

James.

Warning: Unhelpful, but very therapeutic, rant:

I don't have much in the way of useful assistance here, other than, don't
use ArcServeIT. The exchange agent is crap. It's worse than a buttload
of
 POP connectors.

Is this opinion from the bandwagon of Computer Associates bashers? No,
it's
from using the poorly written product for a few years. I no longer
support
nor intend to jeopardize important information such as email with any CA
product as a result of working with the Exchange Agents. They do make
some
good software, but not in this department.

Again, though ignored multiple times before, I invite Computer Associates
to
join this forum of peers and defend their applications to the people that
actually use them. Because, last I checked there is no Computer
Associates
MVP programme, and frankly you don't have enough money to afford me to
look
 up the answer.

Otherwise, it would seem you need sufficient rights to install this
software, and you don't have such.

 Some thoughts...

 Exchange server 5.5 SP2

Why only sp2? I hope you at least have the post-sp2 IMS fixes applied or
you do not have this connected to the internet.

I suspect the Exchange Administrator account is corrupted.

 Not the likely target.

I logged into the Service Account and made sure I was Administrator
there
 too.

I'm not sure I understand that.

When I tried to install A/V software I couldn't log in as Exchange
 Administrator either.

That must have been the other frustrating piece of crap software known as
EjaculateIT. Personally, I'd go with grisoft's product (www.grisoft.com),
as Warren has done, if I could.

The above thoughts are solely my own.

I can't seem to get ARCServe to back up my (WINNT 4.0 SP6) Exchange server

Where do I look to resolve my password problems? I suspect the Exchange
Administrator account is corrupted. Also, one of my users lost his word
functionality and even though I've scanned his machine with two different
antivirus programs, I can't find any viruses or worms, which brings me
back
to Exchange Server. Unfortunately, I can't install an A/V program for
MS-exchange until I resolve the Exchange Administrator account which won't
let me install the A/V software.

 Any ideas?

 Thanks in advance.
