Step 5 of the Ed Crowley Server Move method...

2002-02-22 Thread kdl
Title: Step 5 of the Ed Crowley Server Move method...

Step 5 says

Create replicas of the public folders on the new server. When the contents of the folders have replicated (do wait a little while!), remove the replicas from the old server.

What is the best way to accomplish this?

I've gone to the replication page on each public folder and selected for them to be replicated on the new server I'm adding. I did this several days ago.

Should this be sufficient (minus any new material)?

I've also set the home server for each public folder to the new server. Does this take effect immediately or do I have to restart any services.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help,
Kelly

Running Exchange 5.5 on an NT4SP6 box.

The GUI version of NTBACKUP recognizes the Exchange IS and DS and will back
them up. However, I would like to put the proper commands in a batch file
to run at a given time via the AT command.

I've STFW'd and RTFM'd and haven't been abl;e to find how this is done.
Could someone either show some examples of how they may have done it or
point me to a source that shows.

Thanks in advance.

I have tried starting outlook with /cleanreminders and /cleanfreebusy. Still no reminders.

e.g. 'Martin Blackstone' mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] in the to address is no good

Leaving the mailto: in causes exchange to try and use 'mailto' as a transport, not SMTP.

Going
by a previous response, there must be some specific mention of what to do with
SBS in the DR whitpapers. Try reading the DR whitepapers carefully before trying
any of what I am suggesting.

If
nothing new there, set up a new server with same name, etc and look at Q101229.
Follow the directions to backup your existing server and registry, then restore
the SAM,regsitry, etcas instructed, restart and then restore winnt,
reboot, then restore the IS/DS.

Just
some ideas. YMMV

There is a utility with NT that will create a recover diskette
(rdisk). One of the things it does is write the SAM to diskette (providing
of course it will fit on a diskette).

big maybe
Create a recovery diskette set on your main DC
Go
to the "recovery" server and use recovery mode (I'm not sure how, I think it
is an F-Key)
Restore the backed up SAM to the recovery server
reboot and give it a whirl
/big maybe

or
another idea I just had is

SWAG
Or, backup to tape including registry using NT backup.

Restore registry from tape to your recovery
server.
Then try IS/DS restore.
/SWAG

Just off the top of my head here. I'm not making any promises. I
don't even remember the name of the utility to back up the SAM.

See if Q103280, or
Q126464

You may need Regback.exe from the NTRK or
BORK.

That IS the point I CAN NOT use the backed up dir.edb unless I can
pull the SAM on the target box, MS suggests a "recovery server" as a BDC

KDL, your Idea is interesting, can one just pull the SAM off the

That would be the equivalent of BLB.

There are risks/issues you must assume in doing so. It is a
good backup to your backups, expecially for the most important mailboxes,
like the Exchange Administrator or CEO/CIO/EIEIO.

(Assumption: Full backups... no incrementals, excrementals,
  differentials)
Backups do a lot. There are two main components to backing up
'email'. The databases and the transaction logs. The logs
contain information processed since the last full backup. Toast the
database and the logs could potentially be 'replayed' to bring your system
back to point of failure. A BLB/exmerge/offline backup will not
allow for this. Online backups also provide other checking of your
system and report to the application event log.

   Have tried using FQDN in
logon dialog - same thing. On Exchange virtual directory I have it set up
for anonymous and basic authentication. Event log shows unknown user or password if I
try to log on as any user other than administrator.

Any suggestions? This is on my home machine so I'll
not be able to try any suggestions until I get home this
  evening.
  Thanks, Kelly

OWA logon problems

2002-01-09 Thread kdl
Title: OWA logon problems

I am trying to figure out what I've messed up.

Here is the config:
W2K SP2, Ex5.5 SP4.

Trying to access OWA using IE 5.5 and IE 6. At the logon dialog I can log in as Administrator and view any users mailbox, but get permission denied if I try to logon as any other user. Have I messed up permissions somewhere? If so where?

A few more bits of (pertinent?) info:
Have tried using FQDN in logon dialog - same thing.
On Exchange virtual directory I have it set up for anonymous and basic authentication.
Event log shows unknown user or password if I try to log on as any user other than administrator.

F:\exchsrvr\webdata:

Originally, everyone had full access (immediately after the install of exchange). It did not work this way (same symptoms).

Now, each user (not the everyone collective, just admin and all other valid users) have full access. What should the permissions be? Should IUSR have access? If so what level?

Thanks

archive directories under imcdata directory

2001-11-12 Thread kdl
Title: archive directories under imcdata directory

Using Exchange 5.5 SP 3 under Windows NT 4.0 SP 6.

In the IMCdata directory their are several other directories.
These are in, log, out, Pickup, and work. Each of these have a subdirectory Archive (except log). These archive directories add up to more than 1GB of data. Can I clear them out (i.e. delete their contents)? The most recent file in any of them seems to be from March.

Also, what data is stored in the Log directory (imcdata\log)? It has 0.5GB of files ending in .log, again the most recent from March of 2001.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ooooh, sometimes I just don't get it.

Thanks, the FAQ explains all of this very well (of course).

Move IS and DS to a machine with a different name

2001-09-10 Thread kdl
Title: Move IS and DS to a machine with a different name

Using Exchange 5.5 SP 3 on a clustered server using Legato CoStandby Server.

I need to take Exchange server off of the clustered server and set it up on a new server.

However, I cannot change the name of the existing server. For some reason, I cannot set up the new server as a member server of the existing exchange server (the costandby server software gets in the way of directory replication and the install fails).

So, I need to move the IS and DS to a new machine with a new name. I have tried exporting the directory to CSV files, changing the site information to the new machine and importing. This did move all of the DS over to the new server. I then tried to restore the IS from an online backup (using NTBackup). The IS appears to be there and the directory seems intact, but now I can start the ES or the MTA.

Is there a better way to move this data to a new server, or am I stuck exporting everyone to PSTs, killing the old server and reinstalling/restoring on a new server.

Exchange 5.5 and Legato Co-Standyby NT

2001-09-06 Thread kdl
Title: Exchange 5.5 and Legato Co-Standyby NT

I hope someone can help with this:

We are currently running our entire office on a mirrored cluster using Legato CoStandby server. This includes the PDC, SQL server 7.0 and Exchange 5.5 SP3. We would like (because of inconsistencies with Legato Support of Exchange) to move exchange over to another standalone server.

Our plan was to use the Ed Crowley method of moving an exchange server. However, when we try to install the Exchange 5.5 on the new machine, it fails when it tries to replicate the directory with an error c1030b0d. Tried reinstalling several times and always got this error.

The event log had two failed events stating that a file cannot be found (no specific file). These were event ID 7000 and 7001. I have had a similar problem with Exchange and Costandby before and have never been able to get another machine or directory to Sync with it.

My question is:

Is their any way to rename an exchange 5.5 server? My thoughts are to restore the Exchange IS and DS to the new machine (offline) with the existing name and then change it to a new name. Is this possible?

If not, does anyone have any good ideas?

Thanks,
