Windows Backup Exchange Aware?
Is the new backup with 2008 server exchange aware? Can I use it to schedule a backup of the IS to a file? James
Re: Windows Backup Exchange Aware?
Hmm, now that I look at it, it looks like the new backup is pretty friggin useless. I think I answered my own question. - Original Message - From: James Kerr To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Sent: Thursday, July 23, 2009 11:20 AM Subject: Windows Backup Exchange Aware? RE: Windows Backup Exchange Aware?
Exchange 2007 sp2 will provide a integration to Windows Server Backup for simple backup and restore. That is due Real Soon Now (tm). :-) You can read an article about this by Jaap Wesselius (another Exchange MVP) at www.simple-talk.comhttp://www.simple-talk.com/ in the next few days (I finished tech. reviewing it yesterday, they post articles after tech. review pretty quickly). I've also had a script available for doing backups for quiet some time. Better yet, Build a test/firedrill/DR practice/single mailbox server, it can be any old decent workstation. Practice your recovery techniques and verify your tape backups on this recovery server frequently. Use quality Hardware on your production box. Read this: http://www.microsoft.com/Exchange/techinfo/administration/55/BackupRestore.a sp and know it like the back of you hand. That's a lot of bad luck. Are you using crappy hardware? ;) The disaster recovery whitepapers outline how to create a recovery server which you should have available to test backups and use in the event of a disaster to get people into their email as soon as possible. -Original Message- From: Tom Perachio [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, July 10, 2002 4:40 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Building a backup Exchange server I have a situation that management wants me to do with our Exchange Server which is running fine. Backup Exchange using W2K backup
I want to backup Exchange using the Windows 2000 backup utility but it reports access denied to all mailboxes except the Administrators. It will only backup the mailboxes that belong to the logged in account. I also need to backup the store but of course it reports "file open". How do I "close the store" so that I can back it up? We will eventually be getting Veritas BackupExec, but until then I need to get the store and mailboxes backed up. List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
RE: Backup Exchange using W2K backup
Title: Message You still need to be logged in as the service account permissions on the box. What account did you install e2k with? administrator? or did you use a service account? I believe this is the acct that needs to run the ntbackup. The below is also correct you need to select the exchange server. Not the exchsrvr dir or M drive. If doing it from a cmd line I think its ntbackup backup /is /ds or something similar. -Original Message-From: Benjamin Winzenz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, November 09, 2001 9:32 AMTo: MS-Exchange Admin IssuesSubject: RE: Backup Exchange using W2K backup You arent doing something right. Please specify EXACTLY how you are doing the backup. Are you trying to back up the M Drive? When you back up Exchange using NTBackup, you go down and select the Microsoft Exchange Server , then drill down and select the Information Store. Thats the only way you want to back up Exchange using NTBackup. Provided that, at least XAdmin is installed on the backup box. It does not do BLB's, but if you read the Ed C. Never Restore Method, you won't have to restore individual mailboxes. Recently Microsoft recommended we use the native NTBACKUP utility to do the page layer online backups. Just looking for input from anyone on this list currently doing this, rather than going to a 3rd party application for backups. Also, do any of you know if individual mailboxes can be restored when using NTBACKUP as the backup solution? I'm not sure on this aspect, but I would suspect not, I don't think NTBACKUP does brick layer backups.
