Exchange 2007 sp2 will provide a integration to Windows Server Backup for
simple backup and restore. That is due Real Soon Now (tm). :-)

You can read an article about this by Jaap Wesselius (another Exchange MVP) at
www.simple-talk.comhttp://www.simple-talk.com/ in the next few days (I
finished tech. reviewing it yesterday, they post articles after tech. review
pretty quickly).

I've also had a script available for doing backups for quiet some time. My

I have a situation that management wants me to do with our Exchange Server
which is running fine.

A few months ago our exchange server crashed and I had to rebuild it which
took about a day and a half because of some bad backups, then a few weeks
ago the server again crashed where it would reboot itself continuously, I
then rebuilt a new server on a different machine which is running fine at
the moment, but management came to me and said they wanted me to build
another server in case our present one fails again so that all I would
have to do is reload the backup join it to the domain using the same
computer name, site, and org. My question is, is it possible to build an
offline backup server to be identical to our online exchange server. The
offline server is not connected to the network, could anybody tell me what
would be the best way to go about doing this.

We are running NT 4.0 sp6a, Exchange Server 5.5,sp4
Management is looking for a turn around time of 4 hours in case our server
crashed

Better yet, Build a test/firedrill/DR practice/single mailbox server, it can
be any old decent workstation.
Practice your recovery techniques and verify your tape backups on this

That's a lot of bad luck. Are you using crappy hardware? ;)

The disaster recovery whitepapers outline how to create a recovery
server which you should have available to test backups and use in the
event of a disaster to get people into their email as soon as possible.

Beyond that, a reasonable need would warrant the time to restore to a

Backup Exchange using W2K backup

2001-11-09 Thread Kerry Smith

I want to backup
Exchange using the Windows 2000 backup utility but it reports access denied to
all mailboxes except the Administrators. It will only backup the mailboxes that
belong to the logged in account. I also need to backup the store but of course
it reports "file open". How do I "close the store" so that I can back it
up? We will eventually be getting Veritas BackupExec, but until then I
need to get the store and mailboxes backed up.

You
still need to be logged in as the service account permissions on the box. What
account did you install e2k with? administrator? or did you use a service
account? I believe this is the acct that needs to run the ntbackup. The below is
also correct you need to select the exchange server. Not the exchsrvr dir or M
drive. If doing it from a cmd line I think its ntbackup backup /is /ds or
something similar.

  You
  arent doing something right.
Please specify EXACTLY how you are doing the backup. Are you trying to back up the M
Drive? When you back up Exchange
using NTBackup, you go down and select the Microsoft Exchange Server , then
drill down and select the Information Store. Thats the only way you want to back
  up Exchange using NTBackup.

NTBackup is a fine way to do your online backups. Provided that,
at least XAdmin is installed on the backup box. It does not do BLB's,
but if you read the Ed C. Never Restore Method, you won't have to restore
  individual mailboxes.

OK I'm doing
this correctly this time.
Does anyone use the native "NTBACKUP" utility
on their EX 5.5 installations to backup their Exchange IS's online? Recently
Microsoft recommended we use the native NTBACKUP utility to do the page
layer online backups. Just looking for input from anyone on this list
currently doing this, rather than going to a 3rd party application for
backups.
Also, do any of you know if individual
mailboxes can be restored when using NTBACKUP as the backup solution? I'm
not sure on this aspect, but I would suspect not, I don't think NTBACKUP
does brick layer backups.
Thanks for any input you have,

We
use NTBACKUP for online backup of the DS and IS. Didn't experience

Brick-level backups are not possiblewith

If
you have a relativelysmall sized Exchangeserver and no excessive
backup needs, then NTBACKUP will do just fine.

There
is no reason NOT to use NT back up in a small or medium sized org. It
works great. You need to read the MS Exchange 5.5 Disaster Recovery white
paper so that you are familiar with doing a Mailbox recovery and a Server
