E 2010 backup question
Exchange 2010 Two sites Two mbx/HT servers in each site Three DB's per server Three way DAG, one copy go to the other server in the site and a copy to a server in the other site. No lag copies. Single 1 tb volume holds its own DB/logs. For example, L: has a 197gb database and 218gb logs (we're smack in the middle of 2003 to 2010 migration) So, a well-known 3rd party backup tells us they can't back up if there are more than 15-20gb of log files per volume (to be addressed soon) I'm running a native MS backup that's been doing the consistency check for going on 14 hours; I know it can take a long time and I'm not quite at the point of worrying about that- yet. But between worrying about not having a backup and running out of disk space In theory, could we enable circular logging, stop services, move logs, start services, do backup all the while hoping nothing goes sideways in between? Seems to make sense but In the 2010 dag world, just not sure how to go about it-I'd guess we'd do the same to the log files in the dag copies as well, but if it comes down to having to do something, I don't want to guess. Any thoughts, reassurances, other ideas, or you're in a world of would be welcome:) Thanks, Paul --- To manage subscriptions click here: http://lyris.sunbelt-software.com/read/my_forums/ or send an email to listmana...@lyris.sunbeltsoftware.com with the body: unsubscribe exchangelist
RE: E 2010 backup question
You need to let the consistency check finish and quit worrying. Life is too short. :) Remember -- those 1TB drives are SLOW to start with and you are contending with normal Exchange activity as well as the consistency check. With a 1TB drive, and only 197+218=415 GB in use - you probably don't need to worry about disk space either. Once that is done, if you want to turn on circular logging, go for it. Oh, and get a better backup product. Regards, Michael B. Backup Question
I know there is a lot of discussion on what to use to backup your Exchange server - this question is much more basic - I'm just curious what the experts backup and how often. Currently, we are doing a full backup every night using ntbackup. The operations department is doing a backup of the store and directory but they are also doing a backup of each drive c:; d: ; e:; f:; This means they get a lot of can't backup open files. So I'm wondering besides the store and directory what else should be backed up. For example do I need to backup the \exchsrvr\mtadata directory? Thanks for any pointers. RE: Backup Question
I always do full nightly backups. Exclude the \exchsrvr\*data directories (like mdbdata, mtadata, etc) Backing up the \exchsrvr directory in general depends. For example, it's not difficult to get back a single exe file if someone deletes it, but then again if someone whacks the tracking log files it can be a pain. You didn't state, but if this is Exchange 2000, then make sure you don't backup drive M: !
