RE: Exchange changing DC

2011-06-10 Thread Michael B. Smith
Yes, your analysis makes sense.

Exchange should only use DCs in its local AD site. Do you have sites set up and
configured in AD? I'm guessing not, without any further information...

Exchange should log about once every 20-30 minutes a 2080 event log entry that
tells you the in-site and out-site DCs it sees. Post us the contents of a
recent one of those. It would help answer your question.

Exchange 2007

Just had a brief outage that Exchange recovered from on its own.

From Event Viewer:
1022 from MSExchange Mailbox Sore with a failed logon. We got three of these
9662 from MEExchangeIS There was an error obtaining the Unsolicited Commercial
Email default filter level from the directory. The error code was 0x80040401.
The value remains at 8.
9002 from MSExchange Assistants Service MSExchangeMailboxAssistants. Stopped
processing database Storage Group 1/Mail Database 1
(12ffb86a-4842-420c-8c15-b43b86acdbbc). We got one of these for each Storage
Group.
1022 MSExchange ActiveSync The connection between the Client Access server and
Mailbox server CORP-EXCHANGE.wrightbg.com failed.

By now email is piling up in queues. Users are telephoning that Outlook can't
reach the Exchange server.

2095 ExchangeADAccess Process STORE.EXE (PID=3652). The Configuration Domain
Controller has been changed from cal-dc03.wrightbg.com to
CORP-DC03A.wrightbg.com.

Now good things happen:
9661 MSExchangeIS The Unsolicited Commercial Email default filter level has
been updated. The new value is 8.
9001 from MSExchange Assistants Service MSExchangeMailSubmission. Started to
process mailbox database Storage Group 1/Mail Database 1
(12ffb86a-4842-420c-8c15-b43b86acdbbc). (One for each storage group

Email is working normally again. The total timeline was about 5 minutes.

The original DC involved was in another physical location connected by a T1.
The domain controller it's now pulling from is local. We've got bandwidth
issues here in general and I suspect that the Exchange server couldn't contact
the remote DC, so it after a delay, it switched to the local DC.

Questions:
Does this analysis make sense?
We have two local DCs. How can I force Exchange to only use these, to avoid
this problem in the future?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Check out the thread on the NTSYSadmin list about SBS2K...
You'll see that DR procedures aren't all they're cracked up to be. SBS
is shite and any reasonable professional would echo these same
sentiments.

SBS has it's place, particularly nowhere near any network I work

RE: Exchange on DC?

2002-07-03 Thread Ely, Don
Title: Message

Check
out the thread on the NTSYSadmin list about SBS2K... You'll see that DR
procedures aren't all they're cracked up to be. SBS is shite and any
reasonable professional would echo these same sentiments.

SBS
has it's place, particularly nowhere near any network I work
on!

Are you reading the marketing?

Have you ever tried to switch hardware for
it? Or even upgrade from previous versions? Or perform disaster
revocery when it bombed?

It's a good idea, poorly implemented, in my
opinion.

Small
Business Server. Microsoft's bundle of NT Server (now W2K), Exchange, SQL
Server, Proxy Server (now ISA), etc.
Saves
$$ on SW, but headaches come with it. Last one I did, they were probably too big
for it in terms of # users (not over the 50-user limit), and we had hassles with
file printer access rights for users created in their funky front-end.

Anyone
have other horror stories on SBS? Is the new SBS2K version
better?

RE: Exchange on DC?

2002-06-22 Thread William Lefkovics

I have an Exchange2000 server that's been running on a DC/GC through
beta3, RC1, RC2 and RTM. No problems. No unusual funkiness.

The documentation strongly recommends against installing it on a DC.
Though, I'm sure they hate it when customers pull crap like that.

one of our small customers in a single-server environment. We figured,
Hey, if Small Business Server does it, why can't we? Well, all sorts
of funky things happened. Confusing message dialogs, lots of errors in
the Event Log, etc. Spent a lot of time in the MS PSS Knowledge Base.
We even called PSS on a few issues. They all resolved to, You can
ignore that; Exchange will sometimes generate that error in a
single-server environment.

Basically, Microsoft told us Exchange is not designed to run on an
Domain Controller. Not in so many words, but that is what it amounted
to. I got the distinct impression that the only reason it is supported
at all is that otherwise, they would not be able to sell Small Business
Server, and Microsoft management will not allow that.

It _can_ be .. But it's not recommended

- Performance will suffer
- Taking "one down" will probably take both down (ie you

This depends on the size of your org and the amount of traffic generated. Say a
50 user org - with a nice juicy box (at least a dual p-4 with 4 gigs of ram)
sure you could run e2k on a dc, and even get away with running owa on it.
