GAL sorting

2001-11-21 Thread Andrew Burt

Question is:

Winnt 4.0 SP6a
Exch 5.5 SP3

We use both an internet connector and a text paging connector (PageMaster).
Many of our users have two addresses in the GAL, one for their email and the
other for their pager. When doing a GAL lookup to send email, sometimes the
email address is first and occasionally the pager is first. While the icon
in front of the address differentiates the two, we often have complaints
from users because their pager is first and other users send email to the
pager instead of the email account.

Is there a way to sort the GAL so that email addresses is always first.
Does anyone know why exchange seems to put the addresses in the GAL
randomly?

Thanks

Probably not.  I've not found a way to sort the GAL other than using different folders in Exchange when setting up the mailboxes, custom recipients, distribution lists, resources etc.  Those are the types of folders that I have setup on my Exchange server.  The GAL is going to pull everything from any of those areas, but if you go to a specific folder it will only show items from that folder.  In your case you could have a Pager folder with the custom recipient mailboxes for the pagers in it.  Unfortunately, there is not a way in Exch 5.5 to move mailboxes/custom recipients from one folder to another...you must delete and recreate

Hope that helps some

I use separate containers items for such things, which doesn't help your problem.. But on items that are non-people related, like FAX numbers, Pager Number, etc.. I use specific naming context related to that item.

For instance on Pagers I use a P in front of there name and I don't use the display(Friendly) name, I use the SMTP name.

This typically resolves that problem...
