RE: Active Directory and Exchange 5.5
Absolutely. I consider the migration a 2 step process anyway. I would want to see a secure, stable Active Directory deployment prior to implementing the migration for Exchange. There are several subprojects really: 1) migrate users from NT to Windows2000 AD. 2) Synchronise Exchange 5.5 directory information with AD. 3) Install and migrate to exchange2000. The Active Directory Connector synchronises directory information between Exchange5.5's Directory Services and the Windows2000 Active Directory through the use of Connection Agreements. There is lots to be read. We are currently using Exchange 5.5, and I would hope to move to Exchange 2000 in due course. However, I think upgrading both at the same time may be a bit too much work. Is it possible to continue running Exchange 5.5 with all the users being in AD ? Is the AD connector essential in these circumstances. I played with this scenario in a test environment, and after upgrading the domain, I was still able to access Exchange without installing the AD connector. I was under the impression that AD connector HAD to be used after upgrading. My AD domain name and NT domain names were the same, ie. DOMAINNAME became DOMAINNAME.AD. I'm a bit confused as to the role of the AD connector in this scenario. Thanks, Tony. RE: Active Directory and Exchange 5.5
Tony, without the ADC you do not have synch between the 5.5 database and the AD database. You have to manually go in and add mailboxes to users, and users to mailboxes. Then if you make a change on the AD you have to go into 5.5 and reassign the owner. Stuff like that. Also making new users without the AD wont populate the 55 db, so again you create 50 users in AD, then you create 50 mailboxes, then associate those 50 mailboxes to each user one at a time. Trust me, use the adc :) -Original Message- From: Tony Flannery [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 02, 2002 7:27 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Active Directory and Exchange 5.5 Hi, I've been asked to upgrade our Windows NT4 domain to Active Directory.
