Exmerge can Extract entire messages I know that much - I want to remember we 
did something to remove attachments too when the I love you thing came out 
but I am not finding reference to it on the webs, and or in the way back 
recesses of my brain.

Do you have an AV solution for Exchange installed? Some might include the
capability you're after.

I think Sean is on the right track.  I seem to remember the removing of the
attachments back on the I love you thing was anti-virus related.

Ya'll just must not have known what you were doing, we've run Arcserve
here for years with few if any problems.  Backups and restores are very
reliable, including Exchange and SQL.
