RE: File level scanner on Exchange Server 5.5

2001-12-11 Thread Lefkovics, William

I'm not sure who you are not picking a fight with, because there is no
thread below your message.

Yes, Nimda traveled over the wire, but did it not require mapped shares? I
would always recommend a stand alone server with NO shares mapped to it.

IF you do not feel email is a mission critical application and you are a
small shop, then file access to the exchange server might be part of your
server function. That would be the only time it would be worth the effort.

Thank you, too, for your inputs. :o)

Not to pick a fight with you...but Nimda did spread over the wire. And
viruses nowadays are getting more screwball..if you know what I mean.

Thanks for your inputs.

No-one is saying "Don't use antivirus" they're saying that file level
antivirus is only a good choice if you enjoy restoring your exchange
machines. Use antivirus made for exchange like Sybari's or Trend's
products...

RE: File level scanner on Exchange Server 5.5

2001-12-10 Thread Lefkovics, William

How do you protect the box from viruses? Don't use it as a file server.

Seriously, how would a virus get on your exchange server? Do users have
mapped shares? Are you installing applications from questionable sources?
Do people have physical access to the server?

The protection value is not worth the performance degradation in my opinion.

I have included everything related to exchange folders in the Exclusions

Box. But if I run a manual scan, it still scans the Excluded Folders.
Why is
that..? To work around the problem, I have set up a custom manual scan
which
excludes the Exchange folders. Now what do for the Automatic Scan ? How
do I
exclude for Automatic Scan ?

If people recommend not to run any file level antivirus scanner on an
Exchange box, then how do you protect the box ? It's like I am taking
care
of only one portion of the system, not the entire thing !!!

TIA,

Lester

2001-12-09 Thread Lefkovics, William

I wrote a whitepaper on this. Where the heck did I put that?

Oh, wait. Here it is:

How to Deploy File Level Virus Scanner Software on Exchange Server
by William Lefkovics

Do not deploy file level scanners on your Exchange Server.

Notes:
Thank you to Kevin Miller for tech editting duties.

If you are using your Exchange server as a file server where people have
access to shares etc and you simply must have file scanning, then just have
your scanner exclude everything pertaining to Exchange.

It is always best to separate the two.

Subject: File level scanner on Exchange Server 5.5

Hi,

I installed a file level scanner on my exchange machine. It is a NT 4
box
with SP6, running Exchange 5.5 with SP3. I am currently using Trend
Micro's
ScanMail to scan the Mailboxes. I also installed Norton Antivirus 2001
to
scan at the system level. I have left all the settings at the defauly
level.
The only thing that I have added is the path to the "exchsrvr"
directories
and checked the "Include sub-folders", in the Exclusion List. What are
the
precautions I should take ? Are there any guidelines which I can follow
?
There was a thread around a week back on File - Level Scanners, but no
information on Installation and maintenance procedures :(

TIA,

Lester
