First of all, why did you change the header.

Secondly, we have been able to fix all the problems we've had. In a pervious
thread, I said how MS wanted $120,000 a year for the PSS program. Do you
have any idea how hard that is to sell to management with the talent we
have. We're not a stupid company, I just want to fix everything within the

You don't think I don't know that!

I used to work for the Henry J. Krapper Company, and when we needed outside

All kidding aside, the attitude at work is that we have about 50+ MCSE's

Yes, this list can be considered a tool, much like tech support.

Would I accuse you of not being able to do your job participating here?
Probably not.

I don't care if your company has ALL the MCSE's. Very few of them wrote the

What kind of job description holds the title "must know everything"?

I'm not sure what high tech companies you're talking about, but wasting
time
figuring out something that a tech phone call could have solved hours
ago is
bad practice. Vendor Tech support is one of the tools at your disposal

troubleshooting, especially when it comes to software.

Software has bugs. Generally most bugs aren't even discovered until

I don't agree with your premise that if you can't solve something on your

Just remind me to never order services from your company. I'd much

sitting on the crapper for hours writing on toilet paper.

ANYBODY who knows what they are doing, knows when to call for
assistance. ANYBODY who doesn't think that Microsoft PSS is worth a few
hundred dollars isn't worth their time.

It's completely idiotic to think that you know more than the thousands
of PSS reps who have access to case histories that aren't available
outside of the company and that you have access to more knowledgeable
people than those who wrote the code.

Last and not least, any company that boasts that they have 50+ MCSEs on
their payroll is not high on my list. Good consultants get their MCSE as
an aside with no training.

And then again a company who only has one MCSE on their IT staff.

And then again a company who doesn't think that having a premier support
level is worth $120,000

And most stupid of all, a company who doesn't think that outside
resources are needed when they are a consulting firm??? That's a pretty
stupid concept. If your clients believed in the same thing that you seem
to, then you wouldn't have any clients.

As far as Exchange is concerned, there is NO ONE that understands
EVERYTHING that there is to know about Exchange. I can prove that very
quickly and very easily. And there is NO WAY that a large majority of
Exchange can be figured out sitting in the bathroom writing on toilet
paper.

First of all, why did you change the header.

Secondly, we have been able to fix all the problems we've had. In a
pervious thread, I said how MS wanted $120,000 a year for the PSS
program. Do you have any idea how hard that is to sell to management
with the talent we have. We're not a stupid company, I just want to fix

Frankly, I don't understand it either but that's just the attitude where I
work. I do ask for help when I need it, which is why I use this and other
lists. However, about six weeks ago, the CIO told me that I needed to know
how to do everything on our network and he never wanted me to tell him that
I didn't know how to do something. Kind of sucks. Fortunately, he left.

Yes, this list can be considered a tool, much like tech support.

Would I accuse you of not being able to do your job participating here?
Probably not.

I don't care if your company has ALL the MCSE's. Very few of them wrote the
friggin' products. The diversity of Microsoft's products alone does not
allow for knowing everything. Or even remotely close.

Mine, and I sure as h*ll don't like it. See the answer to Jamie Arnold's

To be quite honest with all of you, the first time I saw Exchange was 10
months ago when the company moving into the building hired me to run their
corporate network. I did Notes before. That's one of the many reasons this
list, and others, is so valuable.

William - check out our web site to see how technical we are. We're not just

What kind of job description holds the title "must know everything"?

I'm not sure what high tech companies you're talking about, but wasting time
figuring out something that a tech phone call could have solved hours ago is
bad practice. Vendor Tech support is one of the tools at your disposal for
troubleshooting, especially when it comes to software.

Software has bugs. Generally most bugs aren't even discovered until after
release. Often they are communicated to the software vendor through tech
support calls.

Heh sorry.. I've posted this a few times and never got a response.. Here
goes again. :)

"I was setting up a new Exchange server to replace our old one
During this adventure we tried to move the mailboxes over with changing
the home server in each users advanced properties.  It kept giving me a
MAPI error.. This was late night and we just deicided we would make
everyones new email boxes on the server by hand.

I've been logging on to the old server as each user to copy their emails
from the old server to a personal folder and then back to the new email
server.. Unfortunetly on the old server some peoples properities in
their Advanced tab has their home server set to the new one.  I tried to
set it back but keep getting a MAPI error. I just want to log into the
old server and recover a handfull of peoples contacts/emails/calanders
ect.

Old server - NT 4.0  sp6 exchange 5.5 sp3
new server - nt 4.0 sp6 exchange 5.5 sp 4"

It's frustrating.. The old server has their home server set to the new
one, but it never moved over the actualy email/

I would highly advise you to call PSS. If anyone can fix this,
they can.
If your execs email is as important as they think it is, they
will be
willing to fork over the $245

Seriously, Call them

That's nice.  But keep in mind that some of the folks on this list either wrote or edited the books your 50+ MCSE's used to pass their tests.  And sometimes they have to call PSS.

You don't think I don't know that!

I used to work for the Henry J. Krapper Company, and when we needed outside
help, they gave us a pencil and told us to go into the bathroom and 'work it
out.'

All kidding aside, the attitude at work is that we have about 50+ MCSE's
working for us in various areas of the company. If on of my staff or I can't
fix it, someone in our company should be able to.

this adventure we tried to move the mailboxes over with changing the home

This was late night and we just deicided we would make everyones new email

I've been logging on to the old server as each user to copy their emails

That's nice.  But keep in mind that some of the

My time is not an additional expense to my company. If I have to work all
weekend to fix a problem (which I haven't hade to do, but I have pulled a
few all-nighters), it doesn't cost them anything extra.

I think you're getting way too worked up about this.

Sure, that makes sense. So since your time is not an additional expense,
then you shouldn't ever have anyone talk to customers. You can sit in the
office and play pool all of the time. Time is free, Right?

Yes. Since we're are salaried and very well compensated (according to mgmt),
our time is not an additional expense. Hey, we're a startup, surviving the

First of all, why did you change the header.

Secondly, we have been able to fix all the problems we've had. In a pervious
thread, I said how MS wanted $120,000 a year for the PSS program. Do you
have any idea how hard that is to sell to management with the talent we
have. We're not a stupid company, I just want to fix everything within the
IS group so WE (read that my group) don't look stupid.

BWT, I'm the only MCSE in IS and Exchange isn't one of my certifications.
