The guy who 
installed OWA before my time (convenient, I get to blame someone else) installed 
it in a non-default directory. Apparently that was Ok until after I installed 
SP4 because OWA now tries to revert to the default directory and generates 404 
errors for obvious reason.

and external DNS so I have two FQDNs pointing to the same OWA, though 
internal users never use it (I'm about the only one). I get a 404 coming 
both from the inside and the outside using either FQDN.

Sounds to me like a DNS issue. Can you resolve the server's name from a
command prompt?

the way the router is set up with NAT, users have to type in the IP
address/exchange in their browsers to open OWA internally. From the

as normal but then they get a 404 instead of a page asking them for
their user name and password. I have looked through the Microsoft KB for
pointers without luck. I am thinking of reinstalling OWA but before I do
so, I wanted to see if other people had had similar experiences.

Also, if I resintall OWA, don't I have to reinstall SP4 afterwards ?
