RE: SMTP Servers

2001-08-29 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

If the company isn't big enough to use Exchange, or doesn't want to pay for
it, what is wrong with using IIS SMTP Server? Won't this accomplish what
you want? I think you'll find it should have the functionality that you
(they) need.

Hello All,

Does anybody know of any good alternatives to Exchange. I have a client
that has about 5 users and doesn't want to pay the price for Exchange so
i am searching for a cheaper, or better yet free, alternative. Any
recommendations?

RE: SMTP Servers

2001-08-29 Thread Paul Armstrong

Is the IIS Smtp Svc just for SMTP, I don't think it supports mailboxes
cause then it would be a POP3\SMTP Server. I have never used the SMTP
service and never looked into its workings but I don't think it could be
used. If it can be, can someone point me to some good information on its
usage and configuration?

I agree with Bill on this one..
Hey, what about OpenBSD using smtp/sendmail? It's free, the most unhackable non-MS OS(due to it's constant updates)
and is easily configured(as UNIX goes). SMTP is fairly simple(sorry for the pun)
to setup on it.

There are plenty of SMTP server options out there. They
are not difficult to write even.

I have had pretty good luck with a POP/SMTP server from ArGoSoft. The price is right - free. They also have versions that include more features for fairly cheap and it is very easy to set up. The full blown version is only $88. Of course it is not exchange but for five users it will work just fine.
