RE: Adding a second server and going to a DAG?
Hi Paul There shouldn't be any major impact on your users except for possibly deploying the HW load balance when the DNS is updated. You might want to consider investigating reducing the TTL on those records or the zone just to speed up the process a bit. I'm actually going to do the same exact thing come 2012 Paul. (F5 being my HWLB). Any other docs would be greatly appreciated just the same. Also, if there is a book recommendation out there that maybe spends a little more time on DAG's, I'd relay that over to whoever picked me for Secret Santa this year. =) On Wed, Dec 14, 2011 at 8:46 AM, Michael B. RE: Adding a second server
Well, this is the kinda thing where I'd want to sit down and do a couple hours of discovery to give you what I think the right answer is. But a couple of yellow flags: 1] Why do you think you need a remote Exchange server? 2] What defines big deal to setup for you? 3] Ever used ILM, MIIS, or IIFP? If not, how were you planning on working password synchronization between the two forests? 4] Are we talking Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2007? 5] how big are the two forests, and why were they set up separately to start with? 6] Do the same business drivers still apply? Now, would I consider this a big deal? Nope. Can Exchange and Windows Server do this? Absolutely. Does it require additional software? Maybe. Is the level of effort appropriate for a SMORG? Maybe not -Original Message- From: James Kerr [mailto:cluster...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 03, 2009 11:33 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Adding a second server Due to growth of our branch office we will most likely need to have an Exchange server at that site. We only have the one Exchange server now (at the main site) and there is a VPN between the two sites that allows the users at the branch office to access their mailboxes. That office is on a separate domain and forest with trusts setup between the two. This isnt a big deal to setup right? Is the separate forest issue going to be a problem for me going forward? I do need to change the DC at that location and I have been thinking about making it part of the domain for our main office at at least a part of the forest. Any thoughts? Re: Adding a second server
Thanks for the replay, I put some answers below. 1] Why do you think you need a remote Exchange server? We currently have about 80 users at the main office and about about 40 at the branch. The branch will be expanding to about 80 users as well. There are already people complaining of performance issues with their mailboxes currently, though it could be an issue with our ISP. This expansion has led me to think that if we are going to double up over there, we should have a local Exchange server for them. 2] What defines big deal to setup for you? We are a 2 man shop and from the reading I have been doing it doesnt sound like its going to be a big deal, meaning I can get it done in a weekend without affecting the network for the users. We are closed on weekends. 3] Ever used ILM, MIIS, or IIFP? If not, how were you planning on working password synchronization between the two forests? There is only a simple 2000 server DC at the branch office providing files, DNS, DHCP so dropping in a new server setup under the main office forest isnt a big deal. I am not familiar with these Microsoft services for forest integration. 4] Are we talking Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2007? We are running Exchange 2003 but are planning up upgrading to 2007 as part of our expansion. 5] how big are the two forests, and why were they set up separately to start with? Like I said, they are not that large, especially the branch. They were setup separately because we didnt have a connection between the two locations when we first set them up. 6] Do the same business drivers still apply? Yep -Original Message- From: James Kerr [mailto:cluster...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 03, 2009 11:33 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Adding a second server Due to growth of our branch office we will most likely need to have an Exchange server at that site. RE: Adding a second server
1] Are the users in cached mode or online mode? I probably wouldn't consider a separate Exchange server for less than a couple of hundred users and then I'd be more concerned about how I was going to split the namespace than anything else because all those emails MUST traverse your WAN at some point or another, if you have multiple Exchange servers. If you use cached mode and Outlook anywhere, they don't - they can stay on your ISP's network, and off yours. 2] doable. 3, 4, 5] I'd probably look at consolidating the forests and if you aren't, switching to Outlook Anywhere with cached mode. The Branch Office scenario you describe are exactly what they are designed to handle. -Original Message- From: James Kerr [mailto:cluster...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 03, 2009 1:19 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Re: Adding a second server Thanks for the replay, I put some answers below. 1] Why do you think you need a remote Exchange server?
