RE: Archiving (again)

2012-03-14 Thread Dave Wade
Why do you want to get the data off the Exchange server? Exchange now has
fairly minimal requirements for i/o so you no longer need high performance
storage. Since SP1 whilst the archives MUST be on AN Exchange server it does
not need to be the same server that the primary database is on. Even if it is
on the same server you can have some slower storage for the archives.
Sadly I did find that the OWA search only searches a single datastore so you
need to select the archive to search, but at least its accessible from OWA by
default without having to add extra's in.

Subject: Archiving (again)

I think I may have asked this a year or two ago, but, here I am again.

A while back I bought the Exchange Archiver from Sunbelt, and found out that
they didn't recommend putting it on a DC. So, it went on the backburner for a
little over a year, and a few weeks ago, I freed up a server and reinstalled it
as a member server. I was now ready to install the archiver.

Found out that the product was sold off to Metalogix. So, I talked to them and
they told me a tech wouldn't be available to do the install (over the phone)
for two weeks. I made the appointment and waited.

As it turns out, Metalogix support is horrible. I've been put off four times
now about doing the install... each time they say they can do it, then they
either never call me, or email me and say they're too busy.

So, I'd like to give up on this product, but I'd like to know what current
products you guys are having good luck with?

Essentially I've got an Exchange 2010 Enterprise Server with just a few (less
than 25) mailboxes and a total store of 155 GB. My reason for archiving is to
get the mail off the Exchange server and onto a separate server, and have it be
indexed so that people can search large mailboxes very quickly.
I don't think Exchange's native archiving would work for me because from what
I've read it has to be done on the same server as the Exchange server, so I
don't think that's going to speed up searches.

Any other products I could look at?

Thanks, as always,

Evan

More typically, even after de-duplication and compression, Data expands to fill
110% of the storage available.
Could this be because manufacturers size disks in normal GigaBytes (1000**3)
but servers measure free storage as binary (1024**3) Gbytes?

I don't think Exchange's native archiving would work for me because from what
I've read it has to be done on the same server as the Exchange server, so I
don't think that's going to speed up searches.

Any other products I could look at?

Thanks, as always,

Evan

Why do you want to get the data off the Exchange server? Exchange now has
fairly minimal requirements for i/o so you no longer need high performance
storage. Since SP1 whilst the archives MUST be on AN Exchange server it does
not need to be the same server that the primary database is on. Even if it is
on the same server you can have some slower storage for the archives.
Sadly I did find that the OWA search only searches a single datastore so you
need to select the archive to search, but at least its accessible from OWA by
default without having to add extra's in.

RE: Archiving (again)

2012-03-14 Thread Evan Brastow
My current issue is that although the install was supposed to be done by a
level 2 tech this morning, it was postponed because he forgot to mention last
night that the Exchange 2010 server needed to be at SP2 rollup 1, which mine is
not.

My bigger issue is a concern about something else he told me - that he has
seen many times where updating to SP2 rollup 1 completely bombs the server
and it has to be restored from backups.

Are there some things I could do before running SP2 R1 that would minimize the
chances of this happening!?

Thanks,

Evan

With Exchange archive mailboxes aren't they accessed online so the clients
being always connected put an extra resource strain on the exchange server.
Isn't cache mode one of the ways Microsoft got the server requirements so low
on 2010?

If I setup everyone with an archive mailbox won't I be back to ~2003-2007
server requirements because of all the online mailboxes?

Evan

RE: Archiving (again)

2012-03-14 Thread Joseph L. Casale
My bigger issue is a concern about something else he told me - that he has
 seen many times where
updating to SP2 rollup 1 completely bombs the server and it has to be
 restored from backups.

Yeah, sure... And MS has not seen it, but he has? Don't you think it would be
pulled if it were possibly bad?
I'd also hazard to suggest that MS may have installed it one or three times
more than he has?

Are there some things I could do before running SP2 R1 that would minimize
 the chances of this happening!?

Turn the page, I think you have beat that dead horse enough?

I think I may have asked this a year or two ago, but, here I am again.

A while back I bought the Exchange Archiver from Sunbelt, and found out that
they didn't recommend putting it on a DC. So, it went on the backburner for a
little over a year, and a few weeks ago, I freed up a server and reinstalled it

Found out that the product was sold off to Metalogix. So, I talked to them and
they told me a tech wouldn't be available to do the install (over the phone)

As it turns out, Metalogix support is horrible. I've been put off four times

2012-03-14 Thread Michael B. Smith
Cache mode has an impact, yes, but far less than the impact associated with
RPC/HTTP vs. online mode.

The primary reason for the reduction in I/O load is due to caching (i.e.,
loading indices into memory) and schema redesigns (i.e., changing the way the
Exchange database is laid out on disk).

night that the Exchange 2010 server needed to be at SP2 rollup 1, which mine is
not.

My bigger issue is a concern about something else he told me - that he has
seen many times where updating to SP2 rollup 1 completely bombs the server
and it has to be restored from backups.

Are there some things I could do before running SP2 R1 that would minimize the
chances of this happening!?

Thanks,

Evan

Evan

The only issue I have seen with Exchange 2010 Sp2 that means a server needs
to be rebuilt is from people not reading the release notes and failing to
check/change the policy on PowerShell execution policy.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh529928.aspx

It is in the release notes - so it is a known issue and is easily resolved.

That is probably the problem that the tech was referring to.

First time I have heard of a product requiring Exchange 2010 SP2 rollup 1 as
well - particularly considering it hasn't even gone out on Microsoft Update
yet, so we are in the window between release and Microsoft being sure it is
good and sending it out automatically.

2012-03-14 Thread Michael B. Smith
It only gets challenging when local IT people have TRIED to fix it by doing a
system restore and/or a DB recovery – then it becomes a bigger deal….

I try to let my clients know that if something breaks and they don’t know
EXACTLY what to do – call me and ask. I won’t charge anything just for them
asking. That does require developing a certain level of trust that I won’t take
advantage of them either…

I guess it's a matter of degrees, but if I ran the install, it didn't work, and
I subsequently couldn't use Exchange at all without doing a restore/recover,
I'd freak out a little bit.

(Note to self. Revisit Exchange backup and availability strategy...)

I concur on their less than ideal support but once set up the software is

Evan
