Forgive the questions, but I'm at a medium-sized shop and am just trying to
put the pieces together.

How big are the 16 drives you have in, presumably, the 8 RAID-1 pairs ?

Each MBX server has 2 MSA70 SAS arrays directly attached via RAID10 via an
external SAS controller installed inside each MBX server, correct?

That setup just plain sounds really cool and really
intense... technically speaking. Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking about budgeting for something similar to the MSA70 for a
document management project upcoming for 2012.

We're virtualizing the CAS/HUB combos, but our Mailbox servers, the way
we've got them configured are too big.

We're not upgrading our iSCSI SAN.  Not only is it much less expensive,
DAS is much faster for us.

I have a large University customer that eliminated their SAN when they 
installed Exchange 2010.

They needed fast expensive disk with Exchange 2003 and SQL 2005 and now with 
Exchange 2010 and SQL 2008 (and cheap memory) - they don't need fast expensive 
disk anymore.

They also back up to DAS. We put in 12TB Windows Storage Servers with DPM 2010. 
Works very well.

Right now, we're questioning how we'd back up the DAS environment if we went

I've just moved our last mailbox from 2003 to 2010.  On our 2003 server we were 
using 410gb of disk space, on the new one we're using 440gb.

We did have quite a long deleted item retention on the old server which won't 
yet have built up on the new box, so that's going to sway the numbers a bit, 
but equally the limits on the 2010 box are much more relaxed so I'd expect some 
growth.

Basically I was quite surprised by that as a bit like yourself I was half 
expecting something hideous in terms of space usage.

As for disks, run the sizer spreadsheet and see what it spits out.  2010 is an 
order of magnitude lower than 2003 and something like 90% lower IO than 2007 so 
unless you have a big environment, other than stuff like separating 
logs/databases there's little reason for huge fast arrays.

I've seen between 20% and 50%. I won't say that 200% or 300% is impossible - 
but I'd say it's atypical.

The only clients I have that are using SAN already have a large SAN investment. 
New deployments have been DAS, almost exclusively.
