Re: [expert] Problems probing for the mouse

1999-06-08 Thread Dan

Hi Bob,

Thanks for replying ...

I've got an internal touch pad which is disabled when you plug in an
external mouse. I have the same problem if I use the touchpad, or try my
logitech 3 button mouse (or try no mouse by turning it off in the BIOS). It
hangs when it probes for a mouse, so you don't even get as far as the next
menu when you get to pick a mouse to use - hence I can't get any further
with the installation and have to hit the power button.
I'm having this problem on a Mitac 5026 laptop, M6 installation from the
same cd went smoothly on a Compaq laptop with touchpad and external mouse.

Any the wiser?!

Dan.

[expert] re pcmcia image is broken, unlike RedHat 6.0

1999-06-08 Thread mike montgomery

I run mandrake on a laptop and have had no problems with pcmcia. BUT I am
running the 2.2.5 kernel that I downloaded from the mandrake site . Since
the 2.2.5 kernel works, but the 2.2.9 does not , would'nt this point to a
bug in 2.2.9 ?

Re: [expert] Problems probing for the mouse

1999-06-08 Thread Robert Gilley

Hi Dan,

What kind of mouse are you using? Are you able to select a mouse prior
to it hanging or is it not allowing you to select from the beginning? Do
you have an external mouse attached to the laptop? If so what kind? If
you have internal pointing device(s) you might try installing without an
external mouse and then running 'setup' from a command prompt and then
try installing you mouse. I'm running LM 6.0 on a Compaq Presario 1681
laptop with a Logitech 3 button mouse. The touch pad also works
concurrently as well.

Don't give up!

Hmm. When trying to load the pcmcia modules are you
getting unresolved symbols? What is are the error messages
that you have been getting? I have never used a laptop
so I don't know how much I can help. Although I do know
that there are version mismatches between the kernel
and the kernel source tree. (with the exception of the
non-smp kernel). The pcmcia modules made need to be
rebuilt. Also with RH6.0 you are running the
2.2.5 kernel not the 2.2.9 kernel. I wonder if this
is a bug in the pcmcia code in the 2.2.9 kernel.

No, there is no update yet, I'm checking this today. Everytime I rebuild
the package, some files are missing (*sigh*).

Version 6.5 is supposed to be out since yesterday, but all I see is a
beta2 version. Hopefully the update will be 6.5.

[expert] Problems probing for the mouse

1999-06-08 Thread Danb

I'm trying to install Mandrake 6 on a laptop but it crashes every time
at the mouse probing stage. It says 'probing found some type of PS/2 on
port ps aux' then hangs and can only be restarted with a hard reset.

The same cd has been used to install M6 on 3 or 4 other machines.
RedHat 5.1 and RedHat 5.2 go in no bother.
I have tried disabling the mouse in the BIOS.
I've been through all the mail archives and tried the newbie mailing
list, and now have run out of ideas.

Any help would be really appreciated.

And Lynx doesn't use that anymore since /tmp must be world readable, right?

Are you sure this is related to iBCS? The iBCS modules shouldn't be loaded
unless you're actually using them.
Do you get any entries about iBCS in lsmod?

[expert] esound and the play command

1999-06-08 Thread Jeremy Lunn

Hi,

When I installed Mandrake the other day, I was using esdplay from KDE
with no problems... no when I try to use it, it doesn't work... it
doesn't give any errors... it just doesn't do anything... how can it be
fixed?

I tried to run 'esd &' and it still doesn't work.

And when I use the play command I get this:
sox: Known effects: avg band chorus copy cut deemph echo echos flanger
highp lowp map mask phaser pick polyphase rate resample reverb reverse
split stat vibro
sox: Effect '/dev/dsp' is not known!

anyone know how to fix these things?

thanks

[expert] Netscape+Java: the solution

1999-06-08 Thread Jerome ALET

for those of you, like me, who had problems running Java from Netscape,
the solution is in the RedHat Knowledge base. For Mandrake here's the
solution:

edit /etc/X11/fs/config and add a line like this one:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi

(don't forget the "," depending on where exactly you put this line)

then restart xfs

that should do it. it works fine for me now.
