[expert] Kmail and Netscape Messenger

1999-10-31 Thread R_Yeo

Hi,
I've noticed in the mail headers that there are quite of
few of you using kmail, so perhaps some guru can help me.
I have been using Netscape. Recently, during my travel
home, I accumulated in excess of 800 mails. Netscape seems
to choke on that and I am presently unable to retrieve my
mail using netscape. I run fetchmail to poll all my
accounts and then netscape to collect the mail. Now,
whenever I run netscape to collect the mail, it does one of
the following:
1. Freezes and nothing happens.
2. It asks for my password and after I enter the passwd and
click OK, it disappears. I get the error message "Bus
error"
3. After keying in the passwd, up pops a window with the
title "Netscape Error" and nothing else. That's the end of
that session of Netscape.
4. On few occasions, after keying in the passwd, nothing
happens and the 'get msg' and 'stop' buttons grey out.
Still no mail.

(I can send mails though)

I have attempted to copy my mailbox in /var/spool/mail
somewhere else and then empty the contents(except for a few
mails), but I still get the same symptoms.

I have attempted (twice) to uninstall Netscape and
reinstall, but the same symptoms persist. I'm running
Netscape 4.7-1, KDE 1.1.1. I have looked into Mandrake's
site and seen Mandrake's package of Netscape-4.70. Anyone
has any idea if that will get rid of the problems?

I have looked at kmail, but I do not fancy re-creating my
address book, and filter settings all over again. Does
kmail recognise netscape's file formats for me to do a
simple import, etc?

I can now read my mail using kmail, but without filtering,
I'm afraid of missing some important mails.

Thanks and I hope I don't miss your replies.

Hmmm... didn't think of that. I'll have to see if the spec files use
$RPM_OPT_FLAGS to see if I can do it that way without any modifications at
all... thanx for the idea!

Hello, having a bit of a problem with my ISDN connection. I have a Courier I modem to
connect my 128k connection to my isp. I am assigned 16 ip's which I use as either a
machine
on my lan or one of the vhosts I host on my Linux box. My prob is that after a few
days, or
sometimes even sooner, my connection goes kaplooie. no inbound or outbound traffic
allowed.
Cant even ping my isp. Though my ISDN is still connected just fine. I had this same
problem
with RedHat (5, 5.2, & 6) before moving to Mandrake 6.0 and now 6.1. I am dumbfounded
here. I have had more experienced Linux users look at my setup and they see nothing
wrong.
I have upgraded the pppd daemon as well with the same results. Any ideas? Preferably
reply
directly to my [EMAIL PROTECTED] address as I wont be home till next Friday so will
have
this mailbox stuffed with the mailing list mails till then... =-) Thanks in advance...

Can this be caused by squid itself?

You might try using Squid. We use it in conjunction with Internet
Junkbuster to block, filter, cache, and track the sites visited by our
users.

We have setup Junkbuster as a blocking system to limit the sites
available to our users. We've only got about 30 people on the system
who have Internet access and the "allowed sites" list is rather small
right now.

We use Squid as a cache to try and conserve the limited bandwidth we
have available to the Internet.

Both of these programs will allow tracking of sites visited.

Well, the funny (?) thing is, that I *have* kcmclock installed and my
KDE icons *are* there (last time I've checked, been a while).
Furthermore I've got reports from users for which this procedure
doesn't seem to have the desired effect. So there is something else
involved here. Can someone with missing pixmaps run an
rpm --verify
on the kdelibs-package and tell me what files are missing?

Thanks

[expert] Printer Probs(The Saga)or is someone Killing my daemon?

1999-10-31 Thread WH Bouterse

Into The second Week Now!

Latest is if I delete all references to lp, lp0 etc in /var/spool/lpd
Delete printers in 'printtool'

Reboot

Bring up printtool

'Add Printer'

It locks up printtool

Exit printtool

start printtool

'add printer' IT WORKS, detects the printer and everything is a "go"
from there

A few hours later when trying to print

files quue up

multiple lpd 'pids' start showing up

'lpc start lp' shows "printing enabled"
lpc: connect:"Connections refused couldn't start daemon"

This has happened exactly the same three days running now.

1) Printer is configured and running
2)Machine is left on 24/7
3) From pm to am or after several hours the print session spools but
doesn't print. the /dev/lp0, /dev/lpx etc. ARE NOT DETECTED by anyone
anywhere.
4)lpd is still active by now with multiple pids

And so it goes

Guess its back to L-M 6.0 soon if this doesnt straighten out
I am getting very far behind with my Real Work on this machine.

May the Forces of Understanding the LPR GODS in L-M 6.1 be with us!

If you have an earlier source RPM, You can probably just drop the
newer source package in place of the older in the SOURCES directory,
make the appropiate changes in the spec file and then do an 'rpm -ba

I suspect memory problems, or a cpu floating point problem (very
unlikely).

I believe your ram is bad. turn your machine off, remove your ram and
re-insert. If is due to dirty sockets (oxidation), this might fix it for
a while.

Re: [expert] Printer problems with L-M6.1 lpr-0.43

1999-10-31 Thread V Pascal Nelson

Larry,

I am running ghostscript 5.10
When I have the problem, there are files "status" and "lock" in the
/var/spool/lpd/lp0 directory (they don't go away). When I run printqueue
the message which appears in the bottom box goes something like this:
"Printer is down. Warning: no daemon present."

I am using the package for the Epson Stylus Color 740 which can be found
at:
These files have worked well before.

My printtool is the version that came with L-M 6.1. My lpr is the updated
one, lpr-0.43-1mdk. I have also tried the original lpr-0.38.

I only have ONE printer resolution setup right now, so my printcap file is
only for lp, which works.

Here is my printcap:
**

#
# Please don't edit this file directly unless you know what you are doing!
# Be warned that the control-panel printtool requires a very strict format!
# Look at the printcap(5) man page for more info.
#
# This file can be edited with the printtool in the control-panel.

##PRINTTOOL3## SMB uniprint NAxNA letter {} U_EpsonStylusColor stc740p {}

 :mx#0:\
 :sh:\
 :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:\
 :af=/var/spool/lpd/lp/acct:\
 :lp=/dev/null:

You didn't say, but are you experiencing the same difficulties?

Pascal

[expert] PCMCIA network install...

1999-10-31 Thread morten lund

Hey

Im trying to install Mandrake 6.1 on my IBM thinkpad 370c. I have no
CD-rom-drive, but a PCMCIA network-card. So i thought i should use
bootnet.img and pcmcia.img to get started. But no such luck!

I inserted bootnet.img, and booted up. It asked if I had any
PCMCIA-devices, and I answered yes. Then it asked me to put in the
Mandrake PCMCIA supplemental disk (pcmcia.img, i think), so i did. But
it was not able to mount the floppy, and I didn't get any further with
the installation.

So I tried to boot directly from the pcmcia.img, boot I couldn't.

According to the installation-manual, there should be a image named
supp.img, but I can't find it anywhere!

I can mount the pcmcia.img-floppy on my other computer, as a ext2fs, so
the floppy is OK, and I now the floppydrive in my laptop is OK.

I know that a lot of other people has excactly the same problem (see
comp.os.linux.setup)

Any suggestion(s)?

Does not surprise me at all. Netscape + java combination has been instable
for a long time now. Unfortunately nothing new.

[expert] Russian fonts in KMail

1999-10-31 Thread Tima Vaisburd

Hi experts,

One more question: did anybody succeed in using cyrillic fonts with
KMail in Mandrake 6.1? On my machine something strange happens..

I wonder whether this feature is not supported yet or this is a bug
in my own configuration.

[expert] Sendmail configuration and PPP

1999-10-31 Thread Tima Vaisburd

Dear experts,

I recently upgraded my system from 6.0 to 6.1 ( clean reinstall )
and have some configuration problems.

My quiestion is about mail configuration. I use standard ppp-on
script and fetchmail, MTA is sendmail, MUA is kmail.
Sometimes, my attemts to send a mail to sertain addresses fail with
the message

"localhost.localdomain" - server domain must exist

I tried to play with a masquerqde feature of sendmail, but this wasn't
helpful. Could you, please, give me a hint how to properly configure
the mail?

In Mandrake 6.0 I just set

   hostname my.provider.co.il

in /etc/ppp/ip-up - which was probably a dirty trick, and in Mandrake 6.1
this breaks X security.

Tima.
