Thanks it's what I suspected but since I'd never tried lin4win I thought
I'd give it a shot. Great potential, too

Personally, I'm a huge qmail fan. I really really prefer qmail..
haivng used both sendmail and postfix, I totally prefer qmail.
You'll have to let us know how exim measures up to sendmail/postfix
although I've heard good things about it as well.

qmail has some third-party web-based config thingies as well, I
believe. I've never had the need to use anything like that,
however.

If anyone is interested, there is an RPM for qmail at
www.freezer-burn.org/rpm.php3?rpm=qmail *however* it is currently a
little on the experimental side since qmail's distribution license
makes it very difficult to build a proper install base without
patching anything (which is against the license). Makes it a little
trickier, however the version up there should work completely as
advertised (1.03-6mdk).

The only thing I suggest against is rebuilding the source RPM at this
point until I write a new installation script (again, a limitation of
not being able to patch the installer).

you may be able to fix it I think. you moved the partions around so when it
tried to find the place on the disk where / is supposed to be it's not there
any more - you have to tell it where it moved to. can you boot with a
rescue floppy? if you don't have one there are ways to make them in windows.

it may be as simple as booting with a resuce floppy and running lilo.

you may have to edit lilo.conf and put in a line that tells it about the
physical details of the drive - cyllendars, blocks, whatever.

I'm not sure about the details of doing this but maybe that will give you
some place to start.

if you can't get that to work you may be able to mount your linux partitions
in windows and get your data out before you reinstall.

there will be specific instructions for this stuff in the how to's on line

good luck

You probably ended up renumbering your partitions (some partitioning
software does this automagically). You need to use a utility (say fdisk
from a tomsrtbt disk) that can see the partition, discover which one is your
/ partition now. You'll probably have to guess based on the partition size.
Pass that as an argument (including device name) as a kernel option.

Example:

LILO
boot: linux root=/dev/hda6

HTH

Yes. Forget Lnx4Win. What you've really got with that is you entire linux
file system residing as a file on a fat32 filesystem and mounted as a
loopback device. That by itself is guaranteed to kill any performance.

(FWIW, I tried Lnx4Win with 6.0. A regular install took about 15-20 minutes
while Lnx4Win took more than 90 to accomplish the same thing.)

The other thing is you memory. Just plan vanilla X without a memory hog
like KDE sitting on top of it will eat most of that. So, you're spending a
great deal of time swapping through the loopback bottleneck.

While performance would certainly increase with more RAM, I think you would
see even more improvement by switching to a "real" linux file system.

[expert] netscape pukes when pppd is down

2000-08-05 Thread Norvell Spearman

With netscape 4.72, I could leave it open and disconnect from my ISP.
If I accidentally tried to check e-mail without first re-establishing my
ppp connection, netscape would complain about a network error, but it
wouldn't crash. With netscape-128 4.73-7, it pukes when I do the same
thing. Is this a netscape problem, or does it have to do with a
possible change in the script files that call 4.72 and 4.73? Thanks.

[expert] LinuxConf & Sendmail.cf

2000-08-05 Thread Joseph Lee Pereira

Unfortunately I need to use linuxconf to generate a sendmail.cf file.

Linuxconf points to /usr/lib/linuxconf/mailconf to get the info to
generate it's sendmail.cf file. Problem is those old files generate a
8.8.7 sendmail.cf file. I have Sendmail 8.10.1; I need to have
linuxconf use the correct 8.10.1 files. How do I do this? What files
do I use from Sendmail 8.10.1? Where do I place those files?

I know this a very basic question, so I appreciate any and all advice
I can get. I'm very new to Linux, so I appreciate your patience in
replying to my request for help. Thank you in advance!!

Define "best"! I use the default that Mandrake installs, postfix, but will
replace it with exim soon. Like exim more, but they both work perfectly.
And then there's sendmail. Quite a beast to configure IMHO. Although it is
THE standard MTA I can't stand it. Oh, and we have qmail. Never tried it.
I'm sure I forgot some.

sendmail and postfix both have a webmin configuration module, which makes
live a little easier. about the other MTA's, I don't know.

bookmarks, command/file completition, command history, nicer command line

stable. and i mean stable, not like that crappy gftp.

ncftp and lftp are good command line ftp clients with some sort of "gui".
then there's ftp which just sucks ;-) and you have the almighty wget if you

[expert] Intallation Problems

2000-08-05 Thread Alejandro Arredondo

Hello,

I am having a problem with my scsi devices. Linux - Mandrake recognizes my scsi
card (aha152x) by sending all the right parameters, but it doesn't recognizes my hard
disk and CD-W connected to the scsi card. There is a section in the Linux-Mandrake
where there are the patches for it. There is a image boot disk and a patch image. When
I tried to create the image boot disk in a diskette i found an error. The error is
basically that the image is bigger than the capacity of the diskette and it doesn't
fit on the diskette. So I am still unable to install Mandrake 7.1 in my scsi hard
disk. Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance

2000-08-05 Thread Andy Judge

I just got mine running with PPPoE. It works okay when it works. They have
problems sometimes in So. FL. On the PPPoE connection they give you an
Alcatel external Modem (only if you bitch). This is the one you want. The
IPs are dynamic and the download speeds are about 1/2 what the say (750 -
800). Use roaring penguin's PPPoE client B/C the crap that they give you
(Enternet) doesn't work... at least in my case. I had a problem NIC (old
ISA) andit did not authenticate. It was a problem, but with the Linksys 100
TX cards work fine. As for NICs, you can IP alias on one card (I've heard)
and set up the internal static IP as the alias.

[expert] "top"

2000-08-05 Thread Mike & Tracy Holt

Hello,
Just a curious question here; I was just running 'gears' from the mesa
demos and was seeing about a steady 177 fps. Just for kicks I opened
another window and ran 'top' and left gears running which promptly shot
up to 214 fps! I would think opening another app would slow it way down
but I was wondering what the functions of top are? Does it also kill
background processes when you invoke it? What would explain the change
in speed on gears?

Thanks, Mike

Try using Webmin, http://localhost:1, given the Webmin service is
running to config Postgres, or sendmail. Sendmail seemed less painful for
me to get running, tho. I use GNUpop3d, but I ssh into the box to use pine
for my e-mail purposes, as k-mail crashes with all the messages on the
cooker mailing list. Pine seems to handle 1000+ messages better than most
gui mail readers.

A rather sophisticated piece of software that actually allow you to run
one OS on top of another. It's really pretty slick, I've seen it used
at conferences when different people were speaking and they could just
leave the computer on (no reboot) and switch OS's. Check out the web

I've always done 'make dep && make bzImage && make modules && make
modules_install' then when complete I run 'make install' which is what
places the System.map file for one. Is that what you did?

I ran lilo and rebooted, and the system actually ran at first, just

If you did copy the System.map over to boot ( I
usually have several System.map.2.4.0-testX files
with a link to the correct one) then maybe you
are running the old kernel. Go back and carefully
look at every line in lilo.conf.

I sometimes forget to change label=linux and also
to run lilo to make the settings permanent.

Open a terminal shell and type ftp, it should start the ftp client.
To cover known ground, when you get the prompt type open xxx.xxx.xxx where
x is the address of the ftp server, you can also type the name, such as
"open netscape.com".

Re: [expert] comand line ftp client - what RPM?

Basically it works like the old ftp, but in addition it supports name
completion and wildcards. It also can save bookmarks.
These features make it much eaysier to use than the original ftp
command.

 Klaus

P.S.: If you still prefer plain old ftp, I think in Mandrake 7.1 it
comes with ftp-0.10-8mdk.rpm.

You have a good point, I was mostly going by everything else on the
page. Their whole point is to advertise a java applications builder - I
just assumed they would be using their own product. I don't really
know, but I think you could build the same applet in C / C++. Java is
more popular I believe, but that doesn't mean they are using it.

I do have SO installed on Windows 2000 and it looks great! It even
opens much faster than the Linux version, but that could be due to a
number of factors - I should probably think before slamming an entire
product. Netscape does have good qualities, each update (4.72, .73 and
now .74) looks like the only thing they've really changed is the version
number though! It does have a sort charming familiarity however, like
an old shirt.

Re: [expert] crash! help with post-mortum - update

here's an update

I suspect MySQL was involved. I found it today with a zombie that seems to
screw with the networking. FTP access was dead and you couldn't kill MySQL
- zombies suck - it was still serving web pages like a bat out of hell and
ssh was just fine. I rebooted cleanly and it's back to normal now. I was
running the version of MySQL that shipped with mandrake 7.0. I have upgrade
to the newest version so hopefully it wont happen again.

anybody else seen something like this?

I'm wondering if the masquerading IRC module is
is the backup. If it must be loaded and then
finds that it's request must wait for diald to
complete, there may be some sort of overlapping
of wait periods.

try
insmod

I think it is my ignorance not yours. How does one know when looking at
the source code on that page that the applet was done in Java.
When I have looked at the code on other sites , they have listed :
lang. so I know it was done in Java but this page dosen't do
that.
I suppose to be able to view this type of applet in Linux one needs to
have some sort of MS VM clone installed

Maybe I have just been lucky but on both my systems pages display in SO
as well as in IE and in most cases load faster. You can and in some case
have to do more tweaking in linux in so far as fonts, sizes, DPI, etc. to
customize it to your preferences.
In my case I have used Netscape only if I had to(I don't like it) so I was
happy to get SO installed and running.

You might tell the modem it need not wait for a dial tone.
You might shorten the pause between digits.
These are Modem Initialization issues.
Thes could help speed your time to connect, but I'm sorry I do not
know what is taking the 8-12 seconds before your modem is taken
off-hook.

Hi Steven,

Specify your special listening address in /etc/hosts.allow as such:
ssh:63.196.197.0/255.255.255.0

I noticed earlier that you had specified sshd in hosts.allow. I think
that ssh should be used instead.

In /etc/ssh/sshd_config reset your ListenAddress to 0.0.0.0

SSH is a great tool that you'll want to master.
