Re: [expert] HotJava web browser will not work!!

2000-09-25 Thread Fabrice SERVANT

You need to install jdk 1.1.8 as HotJava is written with a jdk 1.1.?
version (I think it's 1.1.7). But you can keep the 1.2.2 version as HotJava
just need the path to the bin of 1.1.8 .
I had the same problem ...

I know there must be a few hardware guys here who

[expert] Text Only Installation-LM 7.1

2000-09-25 Thread Logos

I'm attempting to install LM 7.1 on a Cyrix 180mHz machine...as I am using an
old monitor of unknown spec's, I cannot config X and will just use it as a text
only device. Anyhow to avoid the waste of space on this machine X would be, I
chose "custom" installation...everything runs fine up until the point where you
choose the mount points (hda1, 5, 6, 8 on mine) and it will accept no input
from the keyboard except from the TAB and ENTER keys, which does no good.
switching (Ctrl+Alt+F1, etc) proves the keyboard to be functional...There is
nothing unusual to be noticed and no errors(except for it not detecting a zip
drive but there isn't one anyhow)...the last message is in regards to my scsi
interface. Everything is normal except I can't assign /, /home, or /usr because
of this. Is there a known bug in the text install that I am missing on the
sites?

As a side note: rpmfind.net (USA) finally has the 7.2beta ISO "chunk" image on
the site...I think this is relatively new as www.linux-mandrake.com listed a
french site and a swedish site. But today one of the two is now ftp.rpmfind.net
(USA). I tried to download(cable at >200KB/S from rpmfind.net normally) them
today and it was telling me "permission denied". Anyone else run across this
yet? I've been waiting for a USA server to host it...

Another list pointed me to the fact that I might be trying to run
a binary of size 0. A search with 'find / -perm 755 -empty -print'
indeed revealed that /sbin/ipchains was size 0.
No wonder it never returned anything.

[expert] HotJava web browser will not work!!

2000-09-25 Thread Stefan Srdic

I have downloaded and installed the HotJava web browser from Sun Microsystems,
I have used it in Windows before
installing it on Linux. I figured that I would
be able to tell if the browser was any good or not by using it on Windows
first, then using it on Linux.

I just can't seem to get the application running, I installed all of the proper
Java run time environments ( JDK 1.2.2_006 ) and have executed the installation
script with no problems. but, when I try to execute the program I get some
funny response from the prompt:

Running the browser without SSL Manager Exception in thread "main" java.lang.Error:
Unable to find a .bdtd file :lib/htm l32.bdtd
at sunw.hotjava.ui.HotList.createDTD(HotList.java:2026)

at sunw.hotjava.ui.HotList.getHotList(HotList.java:167)
at sunw.hotjava.HJFrame.setShowMenus(HJFrame.java:1348)
at sunw.hotjava.HJFrame.setupFrame(HJFrame.java:603)
at sunw.hotjava.HJFrame.(HJFrame.java:421)
at sunw.hotjava.HJWindowManager.createFrame(HJWindowManager.java:166)
at sunw.hotjava.Main.main(Main.java:188)
[[[ Failed to load scripting engine ]]]

I think this problem might be related to the fact that I havent succesfully set
the PATH environmental variable for the new Java. I have tried:

PATH=/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/bin:$PATH

and that seems to work just fine, I can do a "which java" and my results are
/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/bin/java , this works for me, but once I reboot I lose the
PATH setting.

Could this be the source of my problem>? If so how can I insert the
"PATH=/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/bin:$PATH" command into the rc.local script so that
my path is set right upon boot up?

Yamaha YMF-752 has only recently been supported (LM 7.1 was the first to
support it, I think), so don't expect good results for a while. Blame
Yamaha.

Buggy bios is the guitly one. Add 'append = "mem = 128M"' to a copy of
your default kernel line in /etc/lilo.conf (if you use lilo) or
/boot/grub/menu.lst (if you use grub). Run "lilo -v" as root if you use
lilo.

On a decent (NT?) network, all IPs, DNSs, and WINS servers are
communicated by the DHCP server. WINS is essential if you have a
multi-workgroup/domain, multi-segment, multi-subnet network and people
need to be able to access your samba server. In which case it's a 2
minute job to "man smb.conf" and make the necessary edits. But WINS is
still useful sometimes. Also, NT and 98 don't need NetBEUI. Best to keep
the beast off the network.

At least NetBEUI works almost without fail. That's about it's only
disadvantage. I have machines I can't join to our samba-controlled NT
Domain because the Universities IT department hasn't given the NICs IPs
yet !!!

On network cards, it's a good idea to check the chipsets supported by
your kernel (which is almost always what matters) by running "make
xconfig" on the mandrake source rpm. I prefer Realtek 8029 compatibles,
Realtek 8139s, and Intel EtherExpress.

This has been my exprience. Also, how often have you had to re-install
Linux because of a registry error or similar !

Now if only my Video capture (ATI) would work, then I wouldn't have to
spend the next few days trying to get Win98 to use it again !!!

[expert] NIS problem

2000-09-25 Thread Alain

Hello,

I am trying to install a local network in a class room. I have done a server
install with LM7.1.
To install one of the box as the NIS server I did the following:
-started portmap,
-install ypserv (why wasn't it installed for a server install?)
-try rpcinfo -u darwin ypserv. (darwin is my would be server)
I got a message that should translate in english as :
time out, program 14 version 1 is not available,
time out, program 14 version 2 is not available.

Back home, I just rpmed yp-tools, ypserv, ypbind , tried the same rpcinfo -u
nameofmybox and got the expected message :
program 14 version 1 ready and waiting
program 14 version 2 ready and waiting

What could be wrong with "darwin"?

TIA

Alain

[expert] Exit from disk crash

2000-09-25 Thread R.AMORE

Hi.
I've already sent this message in French. Stephen F. Bosch told
me to translate it in English. So i try :

I don't know if i'm on the right list, but i try to have a go. In
fact, i've already sent this message ten days ago to the list "
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ", without getting any solution.

NB : After the first message, there are some of the propositions
i got on the list and my attempt for resolving the problem.

FIRST MESSAGE

New problem : To prepare and realize the exit from a crash. The
problem take place when restoring a backup with cpio.
The steps i used :
1/ I have a system where the partition /dev/hda2 (850Mb) is the
root partition, et where /dev/hdb1 is a hard disk that i would
use as backup unit (4.3Gb). The backup is done like this :
find / -name "*" -print | grep -v "^/proc" | cpio -ocvB >
/dev/hdb1
Everything seems to be right (/proc seems to create problems so
...).
2/ I prepare my rescue disks: no problem.
Rebooting in rescue mode is OK and i have my root in ramdisk. I
create a directory named (/sos) where i will mount the new disk
(wich has crashed) say /dev/hda2.
3/ I prepare this new disk with fdisk and mke2fs.
4/ Everything seems to be OK. I do :
mount /dev/hda2 /sos
cd /sos
cpio -icvBd < /dev/hdb1
After copying a few files, very quickly, the following message
apears :
"cpio : write error : No space left on device"
I did all these things many times without success.
I must say that on a SCO Unix system, this is approximately the
way to prepare a crash exit. Except that the backup unit is not a
hard disk but a tape (for example /dev/rmt0)

Does somebody does this before. I didn't find anything about this
anywhere.

Merci d'avance
Rosaire AMORE. --- END OF THE FIRST MESSAGE

Other attempts (after some help of the confirme@linux-mandrake
mailing list) :

1/ After the restoring is done, nothing was built on the restored
disk (/dev/hda2).
2/ I tried to restore without mounting the TWO disks.:
After a fresh install, i did a backup with :
find / -name "*" -print | grep -v "^/proc" | cpio -ocvB >
/dev/hdb1
All is OK.
I reboot in rescue mode. I don't mount anything. df give me :
Filesystem 1K blocs Used Available Use% Mounted
/dev/root 3963 3963 596 84% /

I do a cpio -icvBdum < /dev/hdb1 > /dev/hda2
Same error : "cpio write error : No space left on device", but
the system works.
I do again a df :
Filesystem 1K blocs Used Available Use% Mounted
/dev/hda2 3963 3915 0 100% /
df: /dev/pts : No such file or directory

GLUPS!
3/ I tried with tar (i think it's not a good way for whole root
filesystem backup, but...): idem.

Here it is. If somebody can help me...

[expert] bogus error messages with rpm

2000-09-25 Thread Praedor Tempus

Sometimes, when trying to build src rpms it almost
completes the process only to crap out with a totally
bogus error message:

checking for autoconf... yes
checking configure up to date... yes
checking host system type... i686-mandrake-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-mandrake-linux-gnu
checking build system type... i686-mandrake-linux-gnu
configure: error: can only configure for one host and one target at a
time
Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.43318 (%build)

The bogus part is the garbage about "one host and one target
at a time" nonsense. The list above shows ONLY ONE HOST AND
ONE
TARGET and they are the SAME. How do I get past this or fix
this nonsense?

This latest episode came from trying to build the src rpm for
tcltk from cooker but it has occured sporadically on other
src rpms.

Here in Latin america is not cheap... at least now. :)
But you have a good point.

Right now I'm thinking to try it like an experiment, only one client and one
server to see exactly what you fear...
and then decide to use it or not.

We have aprox. 15 machines that boots through nfs-root and they don't have
swap space,
this machines don't work like a real workstation they are used to run
scientific programs only.
But probably the network load could be a big problem.

You probably can do it, but my gut reaction is: don't. RAM for the
workstation should be fairly cheap, and I wonder if the increased network
traffic, server hard drive thrashing and slow workstation swapping would
be worth it.

Also, absent very careful inspection of the network code, the virtual
memory manager and other parts of the kernel, I fear you could get into a
race condition between the network code and the code that causes a page
fault. Or does nbd take care of this for you? I'd approach this very
carefully and with great skepticism.

Re: [expert] SBLive! sound quality

2000-09-25 Thread lselinger

Hi Barry,

I have two machines with Cambridge speakers and SoundBlaster Live
soundcards using the last driver released with LM 7.1 (emu10k1) One set of
speakers is just the 4 point and the other is FPS2000 Digital. Everything
sounds better under Linux to me =o\ I noticed when I first installed the
driver (when you actually HAD to compile and install it prior to it
actually using all 4 channels) I noticed a lot of the sound was a little
tinny but not since then have I noticed a problem.

Lonny Selinger

I've been using the emu10k1 drivers since the first one
appeared; currently using today's snapshot, although I've been using the
version that Mandrake installed when I updated to 7.1 until today. I have
a set of Cambridge SoundWorks speakers that sound fabulous when my wife
listens to CDs or mp3s under Win98. Unfortunately, under Linux they sound
somewhat tinny and fuzzy, sort of like very slight square wave
distortion on a solid state guitar amp, if anyone knows what that
sounds like.. Does anyone else see this difference, or is it just me?

[expert] Network Block Device ndb and nbdd

2000-09-25 Thread Alfredo Carlos López

Hi!

I'm trying to make a swap space in a diskless machine trough the network
using nbd, the nbd could be load
like a module in the client side ( in this case the diskless machine).
The problem is how to configure the server. I need to apply the patch to
the kernel in the server to do it?
I read that I need to run the server daemon nbdd to accomplish this
but that I need to apply a patch to the kernel...
and then load another module in the server (nbdd I think).
The mandrake kernel have this patch included ?
If someone could give me a hint about this...
ALF

For the time being, I'm going to stick with peicemeal updates.
Also, won't go with KDE2 until glaring bugs are fixed at ~2.0.1.

Yeah, I did that...I'm wondering if maybe "rpm --initdb" might be better. What
files would I need to backup in order to keep a copy of the existing RPM
database? I see that there's a bunch of stuff in /var/lib/rpm, but is there
anything else tucked away that I need to be aware of?

Re: [expert] key 2 becomes backspace in X

2000-09-25 Thread BillK

I had the same problem when the xwin32 machine was upgraded to win2000
at work. Its no longer picking up the correct keyboard map. Use the
Xwin32 utility and change the keyboard from auto to 101 or whatever.
Took a couple of goes before I found the best selection. Good luck
