Yeah, try it. I think it should be ok. I've found that with any
number of things I compile, I get lots of messages (not quite like
that, but enough to make me nervous a while ago). I just ignore them
now and if it builds binaries at the end, I figure it must be (more or
less) ok, so I wouldn't worry about those messages. Now, if glibc
doesn't work properly once you install it, that's a different story.

It happens with perl and xterm! One box has the Mandrake perl RPMS as follows:

perl-base-5.00503-10mdk
perl-MIME-tools-4.124-1mdk
perl-Msgcat-1.03-3mdk

perl-5.00503-10mdk
perl-MIME-Base64-2.11-3mdk
mod_perl-1.21-21mdk

Another box (exhibiting identical problems) has perl built by the CPAN module
to run perl 5.6.0. Both systems have the same problems with perl and xterm.
Here is the transcript again.

$ perl
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:

are supported and installed on your system.

RE: [expert] Beginning Programming For Linux

> ... Like why does every file in C start with #! include?

These are the necessary header files for some of the functions your program
will be using. C requires that functions be declared prior to being used
and this takes care of the necessary declarations by letting your program
know where to find the declarations. Pardon me for presuming but it sounds
like you could server yourself well by study C programming either before or
as you attempt to use the Wrox book. A good text for C, IMHO, is 'C++
Primer Plus' by Stephen Prata from Waite Group Press. The Wrox book you
cite is excellent but does presume the reader has a working knowledge of C
programming.

> (I think) C?

Emacs is simply a text editor for your purpose. And shell programming is
not C programming but the process of creating a script that your command
shell, usually Bash, interprets one line at a time to perform what ever
commands you have written. You appear to be confusing shell scripting with
the writing of executable programs. In that case, the '#' is used to
comment lines you don't want the computer to run. The '#!' is more commonly
seen when running Perl scripts and is of the form '#! /usr/bin/perl' to let
the command shell to know to use Perl to interpret the code and gives the
location if will find Perl.

Does it actually write the glibc RPM? Or does it give you an error
and crap out?

This is due to not really having a good way to increment version
numbers for the updates. Without creating a -1mdksa or something like
that (how clumsy would that be?!), we're rather stuck. Suggestions
are welcome.

> Anyone? Anyone have any insights? Suggestions?

I can't tell you why you're getting that error, but if glibc compiles
properly and doesn't exit on an error, you should be ok.

Ok... which version of Mandrake are we talking about again? 7.0 or
7.1? I'm wondering if perl needs to be rebuilt against glibc (kinda
like zsh)... odd thing is I don't have this problem at all, and I
haven't updated perl at all on my test 7.0.

Let me look into this further...

Hi Ivan
Hello,
I just picked up a book called Beginning Linux Programming from Wrox.
I have
just started reading this book, and there are some questions that I
think they
assume I know, but don't.  I need to find a book or a webpage
that explains
several basic things.  Like why does every file in C start with
#! include?
It is difficult to find a single source to answer all your 'basic' questions.
A good choice would be
www.linuxstart.com - It has various categories and you can browse through
them to find out what you need

For the most part this book looks to be very useful as it is very thick,
and
uses a more conversational tone rather than technical, but it doesn't
cover
some of the raw basics.  Any suggestions would be useful.

I had found the first few chapters of a book called 'Linux Programming
by Example' to be useful but I wont say anything more

Also I am going to try emacs.  Do I need to learn elisp to do
shell
programming, which the book covers, or can I still use (I think) C?

You dont need to learn elisp for shell programming..There are lot of resources
on the web on shell porgramming. There was a couple of articles on
linuxgazzete.com on bash shell
scripting. Elisp is useful for extending 'emacs' functionality.

[expert] Once more. Compile errors and glibc

2000-09-26 Thread Praedor Tempus

I'll give it another shot since no one is thus far willing to
peep at all about it. Maybe this time?

When I try to build the glibc-2.1.3-16mdk or glibc-2.1.3-17mdk
src rpms from cooker OR mandrake 7.1, I get LOTS of repetive
errors about character 45. Here is an past from my konsole
during the latest build attempt:

scripts/move-if-change: invalid character 45 in exportstr for
full-config-sysdirs/bin/sh: invalid character 45 in exportstr for
full-config-sysdirs
scripts/move-if-change: invalid character 45 in exportstr for
full-config-sysdirs /bin/sh: invalid character 45 in exportstr for
full-config-sysdirs
scripts/move-if-change: invalid character 45 in exportstr for
full-config-sysdirs/bin/sh: invalid character 45 in exportstr for
full-config-sysdirs
scripts/move-if-change: invalid character 45 in exportstr for
full-config-sysdirs/bin/sh: invalid character 45 in exportstr for
full-config-sysdirs
scripts/move-if-change: invalid character 45 in exportstr for
full-config-sysdirs /

This invalid character message occurs NUMEROUS times again and
again during the build, to the extent that it even outnumbers the
number of lines that show actually successful and proper compilation.

What is this? I am running Mandrake 7.1 which I am slowly upgrading
to 7.2/cooker level, but then, glibc-2.1.3-17mdk is from the 7.1
version while glibc-2.1.3-16mdk is from cooker (go figure THAT).
ONE of them should be cool for building, one would assume.

Anyone? Anyone have any insights? Suggestions?

praedor

So, does anyone have a copy of 7.2beta2's extension disc? Or the ISO

Thanks in advance. If you have a copy, I'd ask you to post it to a public

Thanks so much in advance.

ISA PNP hardware modems are often confused with ISA winmodems. ISA
winmodems are always PNP, but not all ISA PNP modems are winmodems. ISA
winmodems are relatively rare.

The absence of the hardware controller is why they are cheaper.

Barcode 14227 00158 by Power Sentry at WalMart is a cheap power strip
with space for 3 bricks and 5 normal plugs. If people would quit buying
those cheap strip plugs that don't accomodate bricks maybe the
manufactures would get a clue.

If you buy an external modem, then every PC you own can use the same
modem, and there's no need to keep track of various setup differences
for the circumstance when you swap parts around, particularly hard
disks. One external is a heap cheaper than a bunch of internals. An
external modem can be reset via a power off without rebooting your
machine. Shop carefully and you can even have real volume control,
besides useful status indicator lights. An external modem uses an IRQ
that's probably already been allocated by the BIOS, while a PCI internal
is far more likely to require sharing a precious IRQ with something else
that may not like to share. Lotsa good reasons to go external, beside
being assured it will work with every OS.

Totally true, but it's yet one more box to clutter the desk with,
and 1 more "little brick" power supply to plug into the

You can see the flashing (or not flashing) lights, though,

This is a dangerous way to determine if something is a Winmodem or not
-- it's better to look for "hardware controller" modems and avoid "HCF"
and "HSP" modems. I've seen enough $100 Winmodems.

Generally speaking, manufacturers like to hide the fact that their
modems are Winmodems, because bad news travels fast and people are
starting to figure out that Winmodems are crap in general. If it doesn't
say boldly "Hardware modem" or "hardware controller" then it's probably
a Winmodem.

The only surefire non-Winmodem is a serial external.

Hi list,

I've got an Acer Prism (Acerscan 620P) sitting here on my desk that runs
in Windows, but I can't for the life of me get to work in Mandrake. I've
checked the Mandrake site and it's not even mentioned on the HCL
there. I've checked the Acrer site and of course, like so many other
hardware manu's they only support their hardware for Windows.

I'd really like to be able to use the thing in Mandrake since I hate
having to go back and forth all the time. I've been looking for
documentation for Sane and haven't been able to find anything for that
either, so I'm kind-a stuck here. Can someone here point me in the right
direction?

from updates as well? Can you tell me what "rpm -qa perl" and "rpm

Just like anything else: it depends...

All winmodems are PCI-based, but not all PCI-based modems are
winmodems. If it costs more tham $65, it *probably* is a
"hardware" modem, as opposed to a winmodem, which is a.k.a.
a software modem.

"Hardware" PCI-based modems will usually advertise the fact,
or say that they are DOS compatible.

Re: [expert] Printing on both sides

2000-09-26 Thread BillK

mpage is used by the standard print setup for multipage printing (1,2,4
and 8 pages per sheet). There are lots of options, read man mpage. See
the -J option, it describes in depth how to print a long doc, one all
one side first, turn over the stack of paper and then the other side.
Use the redhat printtool (still comes with 7.1, and set up two printers,
one for odd numbered pages, one for even and go from there (I use icons
on the desktop so its easy!)

btw, the Mandrake printer setup needs some usability features, so its
more flexable like the older redhat one.

Hi

There is an utility call a2ps (anything to ps) that allows you to generate a
postcript with
several pages in one page for printing.

Name: a2ps Relocations: (not relocateable)
Version : 4.12 Vendor: Red Hat Software
Release : 4 Build Date: mié 01 sep 1999
16:17:51 ART
Install date: (not installed) Build Host: porky.devel.redhat.com
Group : Applications/Publishing Source RPM: a2ps-4.12-4.src.rpm
Size: 2626604 License: GPL
Packager: Red Hat Software
URL : http://www.inf.enst.fr/~demaille/a2ps/
Summary : Converts text and other types of files to PostScript(TM).
Description :
The a2ps filter converts text and other types of files to PostScript(TM).
A2ps has pretty-printing capabilities and includes support for a wide
number of programming languages, encodings (ISO Latins, Cyrillic, etc.),
and medias.

I think it needs psutils installed to work.

Re: [expert] POP with Postfix

2000-09-26 Thread Vic

I do not know if you have tried cucipop from the Nederlands yet,
but I think it is pretty good, I beleive it runs with either postfix
or sendmail.

For the English page visit:
http://www.cuci.nl/index.e.html

Or for the Nederlands language visit:
http://www.cuci.nl/index.e.html

I hope this helps, or if the page does not
show you the downloads as fast as you like,
visit:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/cucipop/?highlight=cucipop

If that url does not work, it can be done maniually at:

http://freshmeat.net
and do a search for cucipop

Hope this helps.

[expert] Printing on both sides

2000-09-26 Thread Jeff Malka

In the old DOS world, there was an ancient utility called 4print. What it
did was allow you to take a text document and transparently print it in
condensed form that permitted you to put 4 pages of text on each sheet of
paper (2 on each side of the sheet). It prints one side first, waits for
you to reverse the paper and prints the alternate pages on the other side.

I find it very useful for printing lengthy "docs" or pages of code and still
use it, as is, both under NT4 and OS/2.

Is there such a utility in the world of Linux?

Thanks.

Which versions of Mandrake (if any) have the "new"
software RAID patches (i.e. 0.90 RAID support) compiled

fire up your newsreader and point it at sci.electronics.equipment

You could also try asking tektronix directly, most manufactures have copies of
user & service manuals avauialble. Check your yellow pages for your local
sales office.

If your talking about an oscilloscope I'm afraid your out of luck, but, if
you've had basic oscilloscope training you'll be able to remember how to
trigger the appropriate sign wave given the period and base voltage. It will
take you some time to figure out how it works, but if you remember your basic
frequency ranges and measuring techniques you'll learn quick.
