RE: [expert] Installing Mandrake without a boot floppy or bootable CD - SOLUTION!

2001-03-06 Thread Carson, David

Hi all,

I have solved my problem, which was that I needed to be able to run the
Mandrake 7.2 installer on a laptop which could only boot from the hard drive
(no floppy drive, unbootable CD-ROM drive) and had no OS other than Linux (a
Red Hat 6.0 installation) on that hard drive.

What I did was:

(a) copy the kernel "vmlinuz" from the CD-ROM to my /boot partition
(called it "vmlinuz.cdrom")
(b) copy the compressed ramdisk image "all.rdz" from the CD-ROM to my
/boot partition
(c) create a new Lilo entry thus:

image = /boot/vmlinuz.cdrom
label = cdrom
root = /dev/hdc
read-only
initrd = /boot/all.rdz

(d) ..and then reboot, selecting the "cdrom" entry from the Lilo:
prompt.

Result: the initial ramdisk is decompressed and used as the initial root
device, the kernel shipped with the Mandrake 7.2 install CD gets booted, and
the "init" in the ramdisk launches the Mandrake installer. From that point
on it was exactly the same as a normal install.

Thanks to Pierre Fortin for some helpful conversation..

Hopefully this will be of use to someone else!

Cheers,
David...

Subject: [expert] Installing Mandrake without a boot floppy or bootable CD

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out how to do something which seems simple, but is
perhaps deceptively difficult. Let me explain:

I have an elderly laptop upon which I have installed Red Hat 6.0. This was
an interesting procedure because (a) the laptop has no floppy drive, and (b)
it can't boot from a CD-ROM. Which is tricky, given that just about every
installation method relies on a bootable CD-ROM or a boot floppy. How
exactly I got it working is described at
http://www.ar.com.au/~storm/toshsat200cds.html but basically it involved
copying the entire Red Hat CD onto the hard drive, rebooting into DOS (it
had Win95 installed on it when I obtained it) and using their autoboot.bat
utility.

OK, that worked fine. But now, I would like to upgrade it to Mandrake 7.2.

Same problem - can't boot from CD-ROM, can't boot from a floppy. But I also
can't find any pointer to how to kick off the installation from a working
Linux system, as I was able to kick off the Red Hat install from a working
DOS system.

My guess is that maybe if I added a Lilo entry to boot from the hard drive
as usual, using the kernel on the hard drive, but with the CD-ROM as the
root disk? Would this launch the installation as if it had been booted from
the CD? I suppose I probably should experiment a bit before pestering this
mailing list, but I'm at work, the laptop is at home, and I figured I'd ask
now and see if anyone could save me messing around..

Cheers!
David...

Re: [expert] syslog playing up

2001-03-06 Thread Tom Strickland

Matthias, Chris: Thanks for the suggestions. I have found the
solutions to both. The first is simple and is going to make me look
very stupid. I deserve it and must be punished. The second has had me
stumped for a while...

On Mon, Mar 05, 2001 at 10:17:51AM +, Tom Strickland wrote:

 1) start as single user
 2) start syslog:
   # /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog start
 3) carry on the startup (ctrl-d)

 logrotate isn't working either - it complains:

 # logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf
 error: syslog:211 duplicate log entry for /var/log/syslog

 The two problems may be separate - logrotate hasn't been working for a while.

Problem 1: syslog was disabled. I must have slipped up somewhere and
switched it off and then been too stupid and too quick posting to the
list to fix it myself.

Problem 2: logrotate problems.
I thought that it meant 'duplicate entries inside the log file for
syslog'. Wrong - it means that the /etc/logrotate.d/syslog file
contains duplicate entries for rotating /var/log/syslog like so:

# WARNING : don't use * wildcard as extension
# (glob in logrotate will try to rotate all files instead of
# only the basenames of the logs, i.e. it will rotate
# already rotated files and recompress them, taking
#  exponential time...)

/var/log/auth.log {
rotate 5
weekly
postrotate
/usr/bin/killall -HUP syslogd
endscript
}

/var/log/syslog {
rotate 5
weekly
postrotate
/usr/bin/killall -HUP syslogd
endscript
}

/var/log/user.log {
[snip]
...
#/var/log/syslog {
#
#postrotate
#/usr/bin/killall -HUP syslogd
#endscript
#
#}

... commenting out the second entry solved the error. My syslog file
has been getting alarmingly large as it hadn't rotated since late
november. I have no idea what caused this, as I've never touched this
file. Useful though - now I've had to learn about log rotation rather
than just assume it works.

Re: [expert] operating system switch tool?

2001-03-06 Thread Bill Kenworthy

I think he means to have linux running, use something like alt-tab and
switch to a running copy of windows, basicly swapout and suspend the
whole OS on the run. Would be really cool and useful, but I think the
design of an OS like Linus and Windows is too tied to the hardware to do
this (imagine network connections, time and date dependent processes,
ppp ...). Nearest alternative would be something like vmware or
win4lin, though wasnt there something for DOS years ago that basicly did
just that?

I use Win4Lin at the house and I have used VMWare at the office. It
depends on what you expect to do with win98 while running it under LInux.
If you are looking for DirectX, forget it for a while. Win4Lin allows me
to run IE, Quickbooks, and MSOffice which is all I really need. I only
reboot if I want to play a MS game (which I haven't done since I finished
Vampire: The Masquerade). VMWare allows a little more configuration
options, but is also more expensive. As a computer professional, I am
always a litle leery when things like networking stacks "just work"
without configuration, but ... then again it does just work (under Win4Lin)

On the other end, Mandrake put out a Lin4Win distro which allowed you to
launch Linux from the Windows desktop. I am not sure if they could run
concurrently, but maybe someone from Mandrake could fill in a few blanks
about it?

I don't think GAG lets you run the two operating systems
simultaneously. It just makes the reboots from one to the other go
more smoothly. But you're still going to have the long boot delays
when you switch I think.

Win4lin is certainly the most seamless way of using Linux and Windows
simultaneously. The problem is that it's slow to update so you have
to be happy staying well behind the power curve of the Linux world (eg
- no 2.4 kernel support yet).

[expert] duplicate bootup floppy

2001-03-06 Thread Daniel Woods

Someone asked me a question I was not able to answer properly.
They have a server with disk problems, and could only boot up
again by using the bootup floppy. They wanted to know how to
make a duplicate of that floppy, as a backup.

I could not think of an easy way, in Linux, to do a win-like
"copy a: b:"

I suggested copying to a directory, and then back to a new
floppy, formatted for Linux.
Is is possible to do something like "dd /dev/fd0 /dev/fd1"
with only one floppy drive ?

I usually copy the required files from /boot that I need.
Any suggestions ?

Thanks... Dan.

I am hoping we will eventually hear a detailed explaination
of the travails of the administrators/IT personnel involved.
An excellant "Real World" example of the "CF-Syndrome" perhaps!?

[expert] KDE 2.1 help

2001-03-06 Thread Neal Lippman

Two questions on installing KDE 2.1:

Firstly, I STILL cannot find it in the download sites provided on KDE's
website. Where are people getting it from?

Secondly, the KDE web site states that qt-2.2.4 is required, but it will
probably work with qt-2.2.3. On my system, `rpm -q qt` tells me I have
qt-1.44-28mdk installed - this is what I got with a basic 7.2 install. Do the
KDE rpm's include the update to qt automatically, or do I need to first
upgrade qt? If so, where do I get qt from?

Thanks.
Neal

Re: [expert] linux device driver

2001-03-06 Thread Neal Lippman

There is a book from O'Reilly called "Linux Device Drivers" which i have not
read, but which is supposed to be the definitive reference in this regard. I
am sure the currently published version does not cover kernel 2.4 issues.

There is also "Understanding the Linux Kernel" a recent O"Reilly book of
which I have read the first 4 chapters thus far. It is pretty well written;
you will need to understand quite a bit about the i86-32 architecture, as the
early chapters that discuss memory segments are less clear than I would have
hoped, and I am not sure I would have understood them had I not read the
Intel book on programming the i86-32 processors. Still, this book provides a
good deal of knowledge regarding the 2.2.x series kernels.

One other approach to think about, depending on what you are developing for.
Although I haven't written any drivers for a long time, I did at one time
write quite a few device drivers for VMS. Back then (in the dark ages of
command line interfaces...oh wait - I use Linux now) we used to get the
source for an existing device similar to the one we were programming, and
read it through to understand how to handle that type of device before
writing our new drive. That is relatively easy under Linux if your device is
similar in concept and implementation to an existing device.

I run XFCE 99% of the time now (7 sec to start, vs. 30-40 for KDE), and
almost everything I've tried in the KDE/GNOME menus works AOK with XFCE as

the WM, except for MandrakeUpdate.

When MandrakeUpdate opens, it displays a dialog box for entering the root
password. Under KDE, the next panel appears. Under XFCE, the application

disappears with no traces after entering the root password.

I don't know if this is a Mandrake or an XFCE problem. Even with the Show

subprocess diagnostic dialog box checked, XFCE doesn't show anything - the

app just disappears.

Any clues?

[expert] password in KDE 2 screensaver

2001-03-06 Thread dany allard

Hello everyone.

   I am having a strange problem. I am running Mandrake 7.2, and I
regularly update the packages from mandrake update.

If my screen saver turns on, or I lock the screen, the screen saver will
come up and ask for the password.
However no password is required. Press enter and it will let you in. I
can replicate this on 3 boxes running 7.2

   Has anyone else seen this??? It worked fine in 7.0??

 Thanks
