[expert] Id x respawning too fast, throttled for 5 minutes

2001-07-15 Thread Turgut Kalfaoglu

After upgrading a machine to 8.0 (I chose the upgrade button during
install), I'm getting this message, Id x respawning too fast
the interesting thing is, it's really an x, not an ID number or
anything!

So, how can I tell which process is respawning too fast?
Many thanks, -turgut

Looking for some insight:

I currently have a DNS machine (bind-8.2.3-1.1mdk) serving my network, and I
would like to upgrade this server to version bind-9.1.1-1mdk. As you may
know, this move would require the glibc-2.2 version to be installed. I am
currently running LMDK7.2 with glibc-2.1.3-18.3mdk installed. Because of all
of the dependencies that come with the glibc shared libraries, I am reluctant
to hack my way through an upgrade of glibc. It should be noted that all of
these dependencies are related to other non-bind applications. With this in
mind, my query comes down to just a couple of questions:

1) Could I just force the glibc upgrade, or would this break all the other
applications that are dependent on the glibc-2.1.3 libraries? (that is to
ask, are LMDK7.2 applications even compatible with the newer glibc-2.2?)

2) Would the better approach be to grab the current bind tar ball source off
of the bind page, and do my own compile and install? Would this approach even
work on a LMDK 7.2 platform?

Come to think of it, what is the best way to upgrade glibc files on Linux?
Thanks so much for your patience in this matter, and any insight will be most
appreciated..

Well,

Since I didn't get much of a response on this isssue, I'll try another
approach. Would someone kindly point me in the direction for obtaining some
documentation on why you would prefer a src.rpm file as opposed to a
standard .rpm file, and what is it that you do to a src.rpm file. I have
looked high and low, and found a plethora of info on building rpms but not
much on working with src.rpms.

It may come as a surprise to many of the linux users but, after over ten
years as a SA (AIX, solaris, HP), I have seldom used rpms (asseverated with
tongue in cheek).

As always, all assistance is appreciated.

Can someone please help me with the Advanced Power Management as
implemented in LM8? I can't find any documentation on this.
I want to control my monitor sleep and off timings, and spin down the
hard drive after a period of idleness.
I know that KDE has a Energy item. I don't use KDE at all, but I have
found I can access this GUI control with command 'kcmshell energy'. Of
course, this has to run a bunch of KDE resources so is very slow, and I
cannot find the config file where these settings are stored to edit it
manually.
Additionally, the results of using this are unpredictable and not as
expected; and seem to affect only the monitor.
I found a package called Linux APM Daemon at

2001-07-15 Thread Stephen Boulet

It's easy. You select the US keyboard (international) in the Mandrake
control center - hardware - keyboard.

Then you can make use of deadkeys to type characters like ä (single quote
followed by a), è (backquote followed by e), é (single quote followed by e),
ç (second alt, equals sign, c -- took me a little while to find this one),
and ê (shift 6 followed by e).

Download xkeycaps if you want to explore it in more detail.

[expert] Painless Upgrade for LM72 sshd?

All,

I've recently installed freq-1 on my client machine. My server is still running
LM72. Normally I use ssh for all remote access stuff. However, the newer
version of ssh (client) refuses to connect to the older LM72 sshd server. To
clarify, I have the following installed:

Server
openssh-2.2.0p1-7mdk
openssh-askpass-2.2.0p1-7mdk
openssh-server-2.2.0p1-7mdk
openssh-clients-2.2.0p1-7mdk

openssh-server-2.9p1-3.1mdk

openssh-askpass-gnome-2.9p1-3.1mdk

Since the freq-1 version of ssh requires glibc2.2, I cannot simply upgrade the

[expert] xfs problem...

2001-07-15 Thread Franki

Hi all,

I just sent this to the newbie list, then figured it borders onto expert
territory.. so I decided to post it here as well

I am setting up a dialup server for a company, and they want x...

so I give them ice... (not enough resources for KDE or Gnome, so ICE it
is..)

unfortunatly, the problem below is hampering me somewhat...

having lots of xfs problems, and its killed X...

/etc/rc.d/init.x/xfs start gives the OK message.

/etc/rc.d/init.x/xfs stop gives a failed message immediatly after the first
one.

/etc/rc.d/init.x/xfs status gives:

xfs dead but subsys locked..

I hashed out my fontpath in the XF86Config to see if that would at least
startx,,, but made no diference...

so I added the paths manually..

ie
FontPath/usr/X11R6/lib?X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled

did the same for all the other font dirs..

all the font dirs have the mkfontdir thingy done in them...

and I am still not able to get it running..

anyone had this problem?

anyone know what to do apart from reloading?

details

Mandrake 7.2 straight off the CD. (I think I messed it up by loading
drakefont...)

any suggestions would be much appreciated.

regards

Frank

Re: [expert] Desktop freezes - any ideas?

2001-07-15 Thread Al Andersen

The same thing happens to me (M7.2), but it doesn't take all night to do it.
It's very sporadic in my case: it can lock up after 5 minutes of use, after
several hours of use, or not lock up at all. The mouse and keyboard are
definitly dead... except for Ctrl-Alt-SysReq sequences.

Instead of turning off the system at the switch, try Ctrl-Alt-SysReq-B. It
saves wear and tear on the on/off switch. Ctrl-Alt-SysReq-O works too :)

I've tried everything I can think of to fix it: removed daemons, not run
certain programs, see if running certain programs contribute to the lockups,
etc. Nor can I find any error messages in the logs.

I'm running a Gateway Select, 850MHz AMD, 128MB, so it's not like I'm under
powered grin. I'm beginning to suspect it's an IRQ conflict of some
sort... that or bad RAM

for high quality black but the colour setting maxes out at 600X300.
Since I don't wish to waste ink I would like to know in what file do I
edit the configuration to make it consistent with the printer manual:
 Black Resolution:
 Best: 600 x 600 dpi
 Normal: 600 x 600 dpi
 EconoFast: 300 x 300 dpi
 Color Resolution:
 Best: 600 x 300 dpi C-REt
 Normal: 300 x 300 dpi C-REt
 EconoFast: 300 x 300 dpi
 Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated.
 Thanks in advance. Cheers.
