[expert] Sager Notebooks

2001-09-01 Thread cristkd

I'm looking to buy a notebook to use as Linux-only. The Sager NP2250 is the model I'm
most impressed with but wonder if it would be a good choice for installing Mandrake.
I have a home network (10/100 ethernet) with 5 stations and am using Mandrake as my
NAT/Firewall computer for internet sharing via DSL. I would be using the notebook
mostly at home on the LAN but am looking into the notebook so I can use the great Unix
Astronomy program XEPHEM when I'm out star gazing.

Thanks for any recos or experiences to share.

[expert] GRUB, stage1, freeze

2001-09-01 Thread Skippipix

howdy. got a bit of a problem, hope someone can help me out.
i'm using 7.2, the install was getting a bit large as i keep experimenting
and breaking things, so i decided to reinstall.

i formated / and did a fresh install. changed to ReiserFS for / -- i am
currently using Reiser for all my other partitions and wanted to get that in
line. all is good, reboot. go into windows to make sure it is still ok,
that boots fine. boot into linux and go to installing other things. make
some messes as i can't get Eterm to install. reboot a few times, all is good.

then, i reboot, i get
stage 1
then nothing. ok, i'm checking the grub documentation on my other computer.
it list error messages, but i'm not getting any, just stage 1 and freeze.
so i try to boot from my boot disk i had just made in the install. well, it
doesn't work.

me not happy. *sigh* me figures me messed something up, so me does total
install all over again, formated / again. this time try to boot after
install. same thing. stage 1 freeze. however, the boot disk i made this
time does work, and i made a few more, so i can get to the system. it works
fine, i am burning a CD even now.

i was using 7.2 and GRUB on this same box before -- only differences:
1. / was ext2 not reiser (but the reiser booted fine at first, could that be
the problem?)
2. my ide cdrom, hdc, seems to be dead. i booted from it for the first
install, but then it died and i had to boot from a floppy and use the scsi
cd burner to do my install.
i don't know if either of those would have anything to do with the problem,
but otherwise my system is exactly the same.

Have you got reiserfs support compiled into your kernel? If not, this is
likely the problem.

Not sure there, although it does sound like your hunch is correct, and
that it has just died.

[expert] Pure install from hd (no boot floppy) how?

2001-09-01 Thread Kevin Rich

Hi all,

I have an older p200 asus system (with name brand
components) that the MDK 8.1 beta install program has
some problem with, as do other versions of the MDK
install (7.2 onward).

After it starts reading the media (cd rom, or hd where
ever I have mdk) I get

error in exec of stage2 :-(
FATAL ERROR IN STAGE1: Not a directory
I can't recover from this
You may reboot your computer

To get MDK 8 installed i had to stick that drive in my
other computer for the install.

No matter what method I choose it will crash during
install.

I've tried
1) copy to hard drive option, then rawwrite hd.img to
floppy and boot etc (stage1 error).
2) copy to hd, use autoboot.bat option (8.1 beta has
no autoboot, but tried on older mkd, it has problems
reading my cd)
3) make cd boot disk, then install from cd (stage1
error)
4)boot from cd, (stage1 error)

So what I want to do is just install mandrake without
any other media being involved (copy to hard drive
straight install from hd, no floppy or cd necessary)
and that should do the trick.

But I don't know how to do this...i've glanced at the
contents of the boot cds but don't see anyway to run
any kind of install manually.

I was thinking I could boot into mandrake, then try to
install on another partitionbut don't know how to
start the isntall w/o floppy etc...anyone know how?

Thanks for any help, this is a machine i use for devel
and I really hope i can figure out a way to get this
installed, without yanking the driving or randomly
swapping components.

RE: [expert] Pure install from hd (no boot floppy) how?

2001-09-01 Thread Franki

did you try removing all hardware not absolutly necessary for an install?

like sound cards /network carts and stuff, add them later..

I had a system that would not install with the sound card in...

I took everything out of the PC, loaded linux put the cards back in and set
them up, worked fine..

Also, if its a possible hardware issue, it mighten hurt to download the
latest motherboard bios, Asus are pretty good at supplying newer bios's for
old boards so you might be in luck...

As you mention... you did an upgrade to beta 2, most probable you had an
account /home/xxx (admin) or whatever and is using ID 501
most of the time is ID 500 so you probable have both 500 and 501, I suggest
you use 'linuxconf' and check user accounts, while there you might even
rename or delete the old account ID 501 and leave active most likely ID 500

First start 'linuxconf' go to Users, then click on users accounts and find
out who is using account 501 ( I almost certain is an old account)
and if you no longer use it delete it!

But speaking specifically of the Z51, the driver for it lacked acceptable
quality and we still don't have a Z51 to test it. When we get enough
complaints that it doesn't work, with either driver they could disappear, but
that hasn't happened in this case. In fact a working install of the CUPS

make a group of the same name and number as the user--this is normally how we
handle user accounts. And send me a copy of /root/dedebug.log so we can
figure out how this happened. Most likely you had the same user under a
different number and it is an update artifact, which isn't likely to be fixed
this time, but we need to know for sure.

making a fixed Update is a task similar to making the whole distro. NO one
seems to work well with update programs to move from one distro to the next,
which is why I keep a separate /home directory and just don't format it
during a new install.

Re: [expert] jpg/gif screen capture?

2001-09-01 Thread David E. Fox

Can anyone suggest a screen capture program that uses the jpg or gif image
format? KDE's screen capture utility uses the .png format.

You could try changing the extension when you use ksnapshot - it comes up
with a default filename with a png extension; simply change that to a file
with a .jpg extension. I was doubtful, but sure enough, the image saved is
a JPEG file.

I'm currently running 2.2beta something.

Another approach would be to use xwd (X window dump) and then translate
the output to jpg with cjpeg and pbmplus utilities which can darn near
translate any graphic format to another graphic format by putting the
