Re: [expert] weird less problem

Just for info purposes, the problem with less was apparently caused by
having the instruction : setterm -powerdown 30 in /etc/profile.i have no idea
why that statement resulted in the symptoms I had ,but once I removed it
everything was back to normal. Is there another way to shut off an inactive
monitor from the command line?

Apparently, there is a bug in anything before 1.3.19 that allows people to
perform directory listings on directories where this is not supposed to be
permitted. I'm not sure of any other relevant security problems between
1.3.14 and 1.3.19. I don't know anything about 1.3.12...

Mandrake's hardware database lists both the mouse and the video card in
question as being reported as compatible, but not actually tested.

I'm using the Logitech Wheelmouse with the optical sensor instead of a ball
and Mandrake detected it without any problem. I've got it connected to a usb
port, but my son has one connected to the ps/2 port. Both work flawlessly.

Do you have a cable between CD and sound card--should be a small one with a 4
socket connector for a 4 pin header? Some recent windows machines replace
this cable with software, making your CPU do the work of a 12 cent piece of
wire.

Are you trying to use nfs and reiserfs on the machine? That is a sure-fire
formula for this behavior. The two do not get along.

Well, NVidia keeps the big part of those drivers very secret, so we cannot
offer any help. We do have some in the Boxed sets on the commercial CDs
which worked last we checked, but they are also licensed to you from NVidia
without our support.

Re: [expert] Problems with 8.1 RC1, Anybody else?

2001-09-22 Thread Felix Miata

Plenty. I was lucky I got it to work at all, and only on the sixth try
with RC1 and gobs of tries with the betas. Installer no longer lets you
test X before proceeding to create an unusable /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
file and proceed to exit install step. Takes so long to boot that the
screen goes blank before it finishes. Spends several minutes just
locating dependancies. Supermount is fubar. /mnt has floppy and floppy1
and floppy2 files, & I only have two floppy drives. One of my login
names makes the tty logging in on go to sleep and it can't be killed
from another without a 5 minute wait. Network Connection Wizard came up
on each of the first several boots, even though I tried to run it to
completion each time. Looked like startx was allowed to proceed in
runlevel 3 and didn't work too well that way. I've filed a bunch of
bugzilla reports in the past few weeks.

[expert] Need help with postfix virtual domains

2001-09-22 Thread Dan Axtell

Hello all,

I have a small server with virtual IP address, call them

mainhost.com
first.org
second.org

mainhost.com has an MX record in DNS; the other two don't.

When I set them up a couple of years ago, I used qmail and was able to send/received
from local user accounts under all three domains.

I've upgraded to a new machine with LM 8.0, and found qmail would no longer accept
mail to the virtual domains, but would send.

I'm trying to use postfix, and have had some limited success with both "mainhost.com"
and "first.org", but "second.org" won't receive mail no matter what I try.

All the users are real users on the system, no virtual ones. I'm trying different
things with /etc/postfix/main.cf. Can anyone outline what the difference is between
myhostname, mydomain, and mydestination? Do I have to use /etc/postfix/virtual, or
can I just modify main.cf?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

[expert] supermount patch for non-MDK kernels

2001-09-22 Thread Tomek Jarzynka

Hey,

I am and have always been a Slackware user, and I kinda
enjoy it. One think I miss is the supermount thing. The
supermount diff found on the net is for 2.4.0, and like
50 hunks are unsuccessful with k2.4.8, and I am a bit
too lazy to manually apply every hunk there is.

So, I was wondering, maybe one of the Mandrake developers
could send me a supermount diff that works with recent
2.4.x kernels, so I could apply it against my kernel?

Thanks in advance,
T.

PS. I've seen MDK8 and I must say I am impressed *grin*
Seriously. I think it's great for workstations or newbies.

[expert] Help with postfix and virtual hosts

2001-09-22 Thread Dan Axtell

Hello all,

a couple of years ago I set up a small server with a few virtual IP
address, sort of like:

mainone.com -- has a MX record in DNS
alternate.org -- has no MX record in DNS.

I had set up qmail with virtual hosting and was able to send and receive
email from accounts at "alternate.org" without a problem, although I
remember it taking a while to figure out how to do it!

Now I've replaced the machine and upgraded to LM 8.0, but I can't get
qmail to work. Postfix seems a lot simpler to configure, and it works
right with "mainone.com", which has the MX record in DNS.

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to do virtual domains so that I
can send/receive from "alternate.org" like I could with qmail, or do I
have to get the DNS record changed for alternate.org to add an MX record.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

[expert] iptables firewall

2001-09-22 Thread Expert User

Machine details:
Mandrake 8.0
Linux Version 2.4.3-20mdk
434MHz Intel Celeron (Mendocino) Processor, 256M RAM
Network interface to Internet: eth0
Network interface to Intranet: eth1

Hi I am facing problem getting my iptables based firewall working.

If I use only the /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.inet_sharing-2.4 rules which were generated by

mandrake's drakgw, NAT works properly. Here is what those rules do:

 begin rc.firewall.inet_sharing-2.4

#!/bin/sh

# Load the NAT module (this pulls in all the others).

modprobe iptable_nat

# Turn on IP forwarding

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

# In the NAT table (-t nat), Append a rule (-A) after routing (POSTROUTING)

# which says to MASQUERADE the connection (-j MASQUERADE).

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQUERADE

# Allows forwarding specifically to our LAN

iptables -A FORWARD -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT

# Allow dhcp requests

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p udp --sport bootpc --dport bootps -j ACCEPT

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p tcp --sport bootpc --dport bootps -j ACCEPT

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p udp --sport bootps --dport bootpc -j ACCEPT

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p tcp --sport bootps --dport bootpc -j ACCEPT

# Allow dns requests

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p udp --dport domain -j ACCEPT

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p tcp --dport domain -j ACCEPT

 end rc.firewall.inet_sharing-2.4

How ever if I use my own firewall with NAT enabled, it doesn't seem to work.
What am I doing wrong.
Purpose of my firewall is to keep only ssh, http, https & smtp ports open to outside
world.
Keeping all the ports open to my intranet.
But when I use my firewall, NAT doesn't work!
Here is how I have setup my firewall:
 begin my.firewall.rules

Re: [expert] Installation on a DEC Alpha 4000

2001-09-22 Thread Andre LABBE

Hi
I've got an Alpha 500au WS running 7.1 and had an 1000.
I am surprise than you cannot boot the CD. I can boot it on
an Alpha
1000, 2100 and the 500
I use the srm. At the prompt you type the cdrom address with
this option
-fl 0
Ex
>>>b dqa0,0,4,0 -fl 0

it should boot the CD.

The next problem is not to forget to create a small 10 Mb
fat partition,
to copy milo and the kernel image.
because if you use ARC to boot your box you will need a boot
partition
to boot from.
Now from srm you should be able to use aboot, but I don't
use it, then
???.
The other thing to check is the image you're using.
According the type
of Alpha box the kernel is different ensue the boot floppy.
The symptom
for a wrong image can be a lockup, kernel panic ,or nothing
!!.
Let say you manage to install the system. Do not enable X at
startup,
you're better to stick to good old prompt for now. I had
enough problem
with X locking up all over the place. It is best to
configure the system
first.
Another cause of lockup at the installation. The system
wants to go
graphic but the alpha does not like it. Now there is a flag
at bootup to
switch the installation in consol mode

Hope that help a bit

Andre

As long as you put the whole path in there, I would think that virtually
any sound will work. SO has a nice collection of sounds (in the

I just let it check rather than fetch. Sylpheed does my fetching for me.

No. It will check local mail folders also if you set it up to. Notice

[expert] X version for S3 Trio3D?

2001-09-22 Thread Bob Young

I have various problems with X. It crashes periodically; there is a
pronounced screen flicker on my monitor, even though I have forced the
vert. refresh rate to 85 hz; I cannot get the DPMS (energy star) settings
to work properly.

Mandrake 8.0 installed the 3.3.6 version of XFree86 on my system. Since
version 4.1.0 is also included with this distribution I cannot understand
why this is so.
Checking http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/Status28.html#28 I see that the
S3Trio3D (which I have) is specifically mentioned as supported by 4.1.0,
but not by 3.3.6

IIRC the Mandrake installer did not give me any option about which version
to install; so -
1. why did it install the older version?
2. should I upgrade X? - and, if so, what is the recommended procedure?

Bob

The self-scan port page i vsitedis the one on the linux-mandrake web
site under demos - internet sharing - ip masquerading. if you follow
this demo, almost the very last page there is a link to the self scan
page. that's teh one i used. for security reason i can tell you which
ports the self sacan page told were open. tried using several ways to
close them (linuxconf, etc) there still open.

What I would do (no guarantees that this will work) is just wipe it and
reinstall it...

rpm -e rpmdrake
rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/rpmdrake-.rpm

I can't remember if rpmdrake has been patched, so check MandrakeUpdate
afterwards or go to a mirror and download and manually install any updates
you find.

I see a ton of stuff in the database.

I also discovered since posting my message that kpackage still works. So I
can still use rpm graphically (although rpmdrake is such a nicer
interface); it therefore seems to be rpmdrake that's confused, rather than
anything related to rpm itself.

Reiserfs was to blame (was Re: [expert] binfmt-0000 frantically trying to load)

2001-09-22 Thread Jaime Herazo B .

On the ongoing saga of these problems, it seems like it's reiserfs the
one to blame for this. I got a reiserfs kernel panic starting qmail
today, so i backed up the /var/qmail tree, removed it and restarted it
from the file. The given file (/var/qmail/supervise/qmail-qmqpd/run)
was like last time, so i had to restore it again. It seems that those
warnings about qmail and reiserfs were right. Posibly i'll get a new
harddisk soon and probably upgrade to 8.1 when available, and when the
time comes, i won't have /var in a reiserfs partition...

BTW, will 8.1 come with XFS support? it seems like that one is much
better than reiserfs.
