[expert] LM8.2: Quake3 still refuses to initialize sound...
Hi, (I apologize for this huge email in advance...) I've been trying to get the sound going in Quake3 since I installed LM8.2 but without success... (note: it works fine with the sound disabled at startup). It works fine in LM8.1 I do not have esd running. I've tried to "strace -f ./quake.x86" and I can see the seg fault happening but I can't interpret it... OK it tries to open /dev/dsp and then what? Any help much appreciated ;) I've ordered RTCW and I suspect I will have the same problem. Today in Beaverton Oregon, a 34 year old female elementary school teacher decided she didn't feel like teaching an afternoon science class, so she called in a bomb threat to the local police. She then proceeded to use the same phone to call in and ask if her class was canceled! You know, isn't it bad enough that this almost doesn't shock anyone anymore; but this lady who represents the education of the future of America, isn't bright enough to use a different phone in her elaborate little plan??? Re: [expert] ifconfig help - setting up a VPN
You have the FreeS/WAN (freeswan package) on Mandrake 8.2 (may also be on 8.1, I'm not sure) for IPsec implementation. It should interface with the Cisco router with minimal difficulty. Check out www.freeswan.org for online documentation setting up IPsec with freeswan. We use it here at work, but have Linux at both ends of each tunnel. The setup was real easy and there are quick setup guides at the site mentioned above including the ramifications for iptables, ipchains, and ipfwadm. If you haven't messed with the style files at all, you'll have to copy them to your own directory because by default you'll be using menu settings, etc... from /usr/share directory. You have to create your menu files, styles, everything you want to keep customized, in your $user directory and then edit your .blackboxrc file to point where you put your stuff. I hope that makes sense; if you look at the syntax of everything, it's pretty easy to figure out. Look for the "rootCommand:" line at the end of the style file you wish to use, and make it look like this: rootCommand:xscreensaver & gkrellm -w & whateverelseyouwanttostart of course, make sure to put the '&' between your commands and the existing ones. [expert] chooseSessionListWidget during XFree86 login
Hello all! I'm having trouble with XFree86 4.2.0. My box is a IBM 300PL with an embedded S3 Trio 3D graphics card. I blew it away and installed Mandrake 8.2 -- no problems. I then upgraded to XFree86 4.2.0 (it was using 3.3.6 or something - why such an old version on a brand new release?) Anyways, after tweaking XF86Config-4, my hardware seems to be recognized OK... I get a nice grey X-windowey screen with a window in the middle that says "welcome to " and prompts for a login and password, as well as which window manager I'd like to use. Here's where it deviates from normal: No matter what window manager I choose, whenver I log in, the machine thinks for about 5 seconds, then gives me a new window at the top titled "Session Menu" and with a line that says "chooseSessionListWidget". There are 5 buttons listed: "Load Session", "Delete Session", "Break Lock", "default/Fail Safe", and "Cancel", and all but the last 2 options are greyed out. No matter which I press (or even if I click on "chooseSessionListWidget"), I get dumped back to the login prompt. No KDE for me. :( One other weird thing: There's an xterm session at the bottom right of the screen that says "Console Log for , but I can't interact with it at all. (except to scroll up and down, but that's useless as there's only 1 line...) That TOTALLY doesn't jive with my /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file, which should be showing like 3 xterms and one xclock. (I don't have any .xinitrc files, so that should be used, right?) Also, I did look into the archives - someone had the same problem in November of 2000, but I didn't find the response to be very pertinent to the problem. If I try to run kde2 from Xtart (option 1) after have runed at least 1 time kde3, I get a kind of hybrid windows manager, with the kde 3 introduction screen, but icons of kde 2, not kde sound and english menus and messages :-( Not more kde2 pure :-( I decided to install a second 8.2 in my /object directory to test kde3 and I uninstall all kde3 packages from my main 8.2. Also this could well for new test, for instance that Civileme ask for xcdroast because I solved the multiple xcdroast problems in 8.2 downgrading to 8.1 implied packages (cdrecord, cdrecord-dd2wav, mkisofs and xcdroast), so I will test the original one in this second package. IMPRESSION: kde3 looks great, but still some bugs to solve, so more test are needed and perhaps 3.1 could be a good final package; if those or similar problems appear in other distribution, they are mad to put it directly, as Suse said. I will send more comments about kde3 after work with it for a while. Francisco Alcaraz Murcia (Spain) Francisco = = CrazyCrusoe Hackerd00d http://members.linuxstart.com/openweb = __ Do You Yahoo!? [expert] XFree 4.2 fails to reopen the USB mouse device at APM resume
Hi all, my setup : hardware : laptop Dell 5000e, BIOS rel 6 OS : Mandrake 8.2, kernel 2.4.18 XFree86 setup : touchpad (/dev/psaux) as "CorePointer", Logitech USB Wheelmouse (/dev/input/mouse0) as "SendCoreEvents" Problem : when resuming from APM-suspend-to-ram, the Logitech mouse is sometimes not found by XFree86. The error message appears in /var/log/XFree86.0.log : -- (II) PM Event received: System Suspend Request (II) R128(0): LeaveVT: Shutting down Xvideo subsystems (II) R128(0): Starting up Xvideo subsystems (EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/mouse No such device. (WW) USBMouse1: cannot open input device (II) PM Event received: Normal Resume System (II) R128(0): Starting up Xvideo subsystems Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting -- to me, it's clear : the XFree resume happens too early, before the hotplug has finished the USB mouse initialization (and therefore before /dev/input/mouse0 gets created by devfs). Anyone seeing the same problem, and can propose a working solution ? [expert] KDE 3 test
I followed the civileme way (message in newbie list): First of all I haven't enought spaces in my /opt directory, so I did: mv /opt /usr/share/opt and then ln -s /usr/share/opt /opt. then cd /, in my case /disk/kde3 urpmi unixODBC (civileme wrotte unixodbc but it doesn't run) urpmi postgresql urpmi MySQL (the MySQL-devel package is not in the 8.2 3cds distribution, I had to download it from rpmfind.net rpm -ivh *rpm (still some dependences, I installed it and start finally the kde3 installation) Messages: warning: group nobody does not exist - using root ¿WHAT THE MEANING OF THIS MESSAGE? After to that I start Xtart and a new 11 elemente (KDE) appeared. If I start kde2 (option 1) not problems. [expert] How to get dock apps and the like to auto start under blackbox in Mandrake 8.1
Hi, I've been playing with blackbox recently, it gives me more headroom to play dvds without skipping than Kde, and found gkrellm which is cool. Problem is in the blackbox docs they say stick the command gkrellm -w into a file called ~.xinitrc which isnt there in Mandrake 8.1 . Making this file doesnt get it read, so where do I put the comand, this would be the same place I want to put any and all commands to start dock apps I presume. Problem is I dont know where? Any ideas... cheers si -- ___ Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
