[expert] Fonts in Evolution

2002-09-09 Thread Davor Cengija

I'm trying to force Evolution using iso-8859-2 font but with no luck.

I'm running ML8.2 with default KDE and default Evolution, as well as
Evolution 1.0.8. Iso-8859-2 fonts are available in all KDE applications
when set by ControlPanel->Peripherals->Keyboard->Primary
Layout->Croatian but Evolution doesn't understand that, of course. I
then tried with gnomecc->Main->HTML Viewer and there selected
appropriate fonts. It works there but in Evolution I don't get any
character (not even iso-8859-1 equivalent of iso-8859-2 char).

Then I turned of keyboard layout in KDE and loaded Xmodmap. KDE
applications still work just fine, xterm is OK and now Evolution at
least displays some characters (iso-8859-1, not -2).

I set encoding etc. in Evolution correctly, I can read iso-8859-2
characters but cannot create them.

So, what I should change to have iso-8859-2 in evolution's message
composer?

Thanks

[expert] Controlling visual bell

2002-09-09 Thread Davor Cengija

How can I control the visual bell? Say, the length of the flash, the
'silence period' between two flashes etc?

By silence period I mean the time after the flash in which no new flash
occures. Say, when I'm in terminal window and press 10 times
in 2 seconds, only one flash occurs, and after say 5 seconds I press
again and then get another flash.

I think I need to put something in .Xdefaults, but what?

Thanks.

You didn't state this , but you are probably talking about the visible
bell that's available and run under the KDE.

Try this; Open the KDE Control Center -> Personalization ->
Accessibility -> and under the section "Use Visible bell" use the
control section and adjust till you are satisfied with your settings.

[expert] Win workgroup block

2002-09-09 Thread Brian York

This isn't a linux question
but since some of you may be IT staff or just may know a program that could
help me out. Windows or linux (prefer windows (not by
choice))

Problem: I work for IT at a University. Our problem is
students set there workgroup as almost anything creating a bunch of work
groups. And of course the big boss gets angry and wants all students under
dorms workgroup and faculty under the domain. No we are using 'net send'
win command, to try to contact the people and get it changed. As much of a pain as this is it eventually gets done. But then
people change the workgroup again. Soon a new year comes around and it's
the same deal.

Solution: Is there a program or a script that can be put in
a server that would block any workgroups except a certain ones. It also needs
to let domains stay too.

Thanks

Brian

Thanks for all the help. I think I'm just going to wait for the 9.0 release

That works, since I did upgrade just last weekend one machine from 8.2
to cooker (or about 9.0 RC2). Never tried upgrade from 8.1 remotely
though.

If you have never done it, I would recommend first do an upgrade for a
similar machine locally to see in which order to do things. I have
done in order

1. glibc, and if remote, sshd
2. kernel and initscripts
3. reboot
4. rpm and urpmi plus some conflicting packages
5. --auto-select

When doing it remote, it is good to have a backup connection (like
telnet) in case ssh upgrade fails. Also in some versions I have
observed that current ssh connections are killed when sshd is restarted
after the upgrade--that is catastrophic if you are connected with ssh.

That is not too complicated process, having done it to three machines so
far. Step 4 needs some cleaning, since old 8.2 urpmi does not remove
packages automatically, and there are some dependencies not up to date.

I honestly don't know. My laptop that I am using right now, was
initially 8.1, then updated to cooker before 8.2 and followed it until
the release, and now to cooker again around 9.0 Beta 4--just using
urpmi.

Of course, if you do it this way, there will always be some problem
somewhere, simply because the simple package upgrade did not do the
same thing than installing a clean release would do. But on the other
hand, I don't want to spent long time to figure out all custom things
I've done or extra packages I have installed, or redo configuration of
all the services.

I probably would not dare to do an upgrade from the CD though. In that
case, I would have no idea what goes wrong if something happens. With
urpmi and local (rsync'ed) source, I have a lot of control to fix
dependencies or force the installation. Things could go wrong still,
though, but I have never had a backup plan other than "I'll deal with
it if it happens". A set of CD's for full installation is a wise thing
to have, but I am not wise. Come to think of it, a backup would be
wise too...

(BTW, I did pretty much the same thing on a RedHat machine once, from
5.0 to ~7.0 in multiple stages, something like 5.0 -> 5.2 -> 6.? ->
7.0, before finally installing Mandrake. And there was no urpmi, but I
did it by recompiling some critical packages from new src.rpm's, like
glibc, rpm, gcc, and finally doing rpm -Fvh for the rest with manual
dependency resolution).

Quarterdeck Desqview, baby :) I still own it. DV ver 1.44 if I

but I still own it. I still have the manuals for my BBS too. I used

phone bills). The mail software that I used was called Fmail and it
used indexed mail folders (was quite fast). I also wrote a little

Somewhat related:
For some of my headless machines I use the console on a serial port
feature of the kernel. It allows you to login to a machine even if
there's no network connection. The only limitation is that you need a
second machine to ssh into and then run minicom or your serial term
package. This is useful when doing remote upgrades that could leave the
network inoperative.

Another option may be to use one of those Ethernet/VideoCard devices
that put the machine on the network from bios init to OS init and on.

In this case, he's doing everything manually, not relying on the install

I'm stumped on this one.

LM8.2

Okay, I am trying to replace one linux box with another that is believed
to be configured exactly the same. The new box will also have the task
of being a gateway to the internet via attbi for several machines on my

the LAN can get to some websites and not others. Also, at times the
connection for those LAN machines seems really slow. Could it be that I
need some time for the gateway machine's DNS server to "catch up"? Or
are there potentially other issues here?

This is Windows networking. There's nothing that you can do short of
flood pinging them to make them drop off the network or configure it
properly.

urpmi openldap-servers openldap-clients

But you don't say what you want to do with it. Much more info is
needed. If you're looking for a qmail-ldap/courier-imap HOWTO, I wrote
one at http://www.cerritoslug.org/tutorials. Anything else is
google-able, but I was start looking at http://yolinux.com.

If you find one outside of the list, please let us know. I would love
to track down some better LDAP docs.

It also depends on what you're looking for. I've written up an LDAP
authentication article on MandrakeSecure (see the sig), and if that's
what you want, you probably won't find a better "HOWTO" on that
particular aspect of LDAP (please note that it's still somewhat a
work-in-progress.. whether that means the implementation or the
documentation, I leave up to you, but I'm not entirely satisfied with
the whole scenario).

Personally, I would like to know how to setup an address book in LDAP
that multiple people can access (one person in write mode, everyone
else in read mode); something compatible with Outlook,
Netscape/Mozilla, and other email clients (I believe Evolution can do
LDAP lookups for addresses).

I would like to setup, here, a company-wide address book that
interfaces with any mail client (and would also be used in my work to
build a full-featured web mail "suite" using a number of tools).
Sadly, I didn't really see anything about that when looking around and
doing research on my authentication article.

If by attbi You mean ATT Cable... then The fact that some sites are slow
to conncect seems to be a function of there DNS configuration. It's
slow to update and doesn't seem to be able to "discover" new (to it)
locations. My e-mail server for my compnay is an example... Finally had
to put it's IP in /etc/hosts becasue ATT kept losing it. If you know of
a properly configured DNS server someplane.. I recommend using it as a
secondary or tertiary nameserver.

Quarter Deck created some really nice software Never had a package
that didn't do what it said. Ran a small BBS out of my house in the
service. All it served up was information on all running BBS's in Korea
(Both PC and Amiga... most of them where Amiga) as well as the latest
scores for Galactic Trader. (If I remember the name right.) One Amiga
500, one 2400baud modem (couldn't afford the high speed 9.6 ) and two
floppy's one for the BBS one for the data. Best program was a phone
answering machine written in REXX... used the Amiga voice capability to
do the message.

Re: [expert] Java Upgrade issues

2002-09-09 Thread James Sparenberg

Theo,

Probably if you do which java on your comp it will come back with the
old java Not the new one. One of the shortcomings of java. The
java you want to use needs to be included in your path. So you'll need
to edit .bashrc or better yet /etc/profile to get the path to javac
included in your path. Sun site should (did) have a detailed
discription of this. Java write once run everywhere if you wrote it
on a laptop. *grin*
