The dot at the end of a hostname in the bind db says not to append the domainname to the name. Replace the dot at the end of the hostnames and retry. There's a possibility that the local X server is missing some functionality. See if you can ssh into the box from another Linux machine and then start SSH through the exported X session: E.g., if the crashing OpenOffice is on BoxA, and BoxB is the second Linux machine: BoxB: ssh -X BoxA (enter password) [user@BoxA] export DISPLAY=BoxB:0 [user@BoxA] ./soffice This will at least eliminate the possibility of an X server problem. In your case, it's getting all the way down to the LOG and reject chain, so we have to modify one of the targets to allow those udp port 53 packets through. However, look at the first rule. The ACCEPT target is saying accept everything (that is not a very good first rule to have :-/ ) however, I would like to see the exact rule to see exactly what it should be seeing. So at this point, I'm fairly confident saying that the firewall is allowing port 53 requests in. That can be verified by looking in your /var/log/messages for any line that starts with "Shorewall:INPUT:REJECT:" and lists udp port 53. > Chain OUTPUT (policy DROP) > target prot opt source destination > ACCEPT all -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 > ACCEPT icmp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 state > NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED > fw2net all -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 > fw2masqall -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 > common all -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 > LOGall -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 LOG flags 0 > level 6 prefix `Shorewall:OUTPUT:REJECT:' > reject all -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 The reply packet will be coming from port 53. It's likely that your reply packet be blocked if the targets in this chain don't explicitly allow it. Again, look for "Shorewall:OUTPUT:REJECT:" in the log file saying that it blocked udp port 53. > Chain common (5 references) > target prot opt source destination > ACCEPT icmp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 icmp type 8 > icmpdeficmp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 > DROP tcp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 state INVALID > REJECT udp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 udp > dpts:137:139 reject-with icmp-port-unreachable > REJECT udp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 udp dpt:445 > reject-with icmp-port-unreachable > reject tcp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 tcp dpt:135 > DROP udp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 udp dpt:1900 > DROP all -- 0.0.0.0/0255.255.255.255 > DROP all -- 0.0.0.0/0224.0.0.0/4 > reject tcp -- 0.0.0.0/00.0.0.0/0 tcp dpt:113 > DROP all -- 0.0.0.0/0255.255.255.255 > DROP all -- 0.0.0.0/0192.168.1.255 In this chain would be a possible place to be to allow udp port 53, but don't do it there. use VI, but go to the end of lines, delete the control characters... As far as I remember you cant use CR+LF, just CR. VI does only CR, some editors put CR+LF (DOS EDIT.COM style) and it cause some erros in *NIX control files. orlando Jim C wrote: > > Uh, oh. Actually I have. [expert] DNS problems on 9.0
For project reasons I've installed a DNS server on my gateway/router using techniques that worked on the previous version of Mandrake. Specifically I'ld been following the instructions in O'Reilly's book on DNS & BIND. Now that I've installed Mandrake 9.0 on the server my cleints can no longer ping the server using it's name. I've tried it with and without shorewall and currently have msec removed from the system to eliminate the added complexity of troubleshooting it as well. The cleints are getting the DHCP info just fine as per this info from one of the cleints (Note: This is an XP client but the problem is identical on a Linux client): Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Please check the name and try again. C:\Documents and Settings\Jim> The DHCP config was generated by the wizard and the named.conf also and are pretty standard in this regards... so why don't I have DNS? It is mandatory on this small home network because it is a pilot cluster project albiet a simplified one designed to abstract a more complex one. Oddly enough, Mandrake 9.0's Internet Connection Shareing is working just fine and although my cleints cannot ping the DNS server by name, I can still write you this email through a web browser on an XP client. Is it possible that my DNS queries are being highjacked by Internet Connection Shareing and tossed out onto my ISPs network? This would be bad. Answer: No. See below. Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Since it works fine for me on 8.2 with a 2.4.19 kernel that I built myself, you could try that route on 9.0. Giving up supermount is not an option if you happen to play games, native or via wine, and they require CD changes. Supermount allows you to change CDs on the fly without wrecking the session while old manual mount/umount screws it up. [expert] Problems with DHCP client on Mandrake 9.0?
I recently upgraded to Mandrake 9.0 (actually a fresh install, I took the opportunity to replace my hard drive as well.) and ever since I have been having trouble with my computer 'forgetting' it's IP address. I haven't been able to confirm this (as I don't know where the appropriate logs are located) but it seems like the DHCP lease isn't being renewed. I have switched to a static IP address and it seems to be working OK (so far). Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, is there a fix for it? Thanks in advance. [expert] autofs not unmounting
Hi, I was looking forward to use supermount but it does not work very well in Mandrake 9.0. Details in separate post. So I tried autofs. Autofs in Mandrake 9.0 mounts drives automatically, but does not unmount them when timeout expires. They must by umounted manually. auto.master: /mnt/etc/auto.drives --timeout=20 auto.drives: zip -fstype=vfat,user,rw,umask=7007 :/dev/sda4 cdrom -fstype=iso9660,ro,nosuid,nodev :/dev/scd0 floppy -fstype=vfat,user,rw,umask=7007 :/dev/fd0 win -fstype=vfat,user,ro:/dev/hda2 fstab: /dev/hda6 / reiserfs notail 1 1 /dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto, nosuid,ro,user 0 0 /dev/fd0/mnt/floppy noauto noauto, nosuid, user 0 0 /dev/hda2 /mnt/win vfat noauto 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 This autofs problem did not appear in my previous Linux systems. [expert] busybox kernel panic can't boot anymore
Experts yesterday I tried to integrate the swsusp beta14 into the 2.4.19-16mdk kernel (Mdk9.0). The coompilation went well, but when I tried to boot the new kernel I get a "busybox: unresolved symbol refrigerator" and then insmod failes apparently for ext3 and modprobe fails to exec and the kernel panics because no init can be found. So I think the / filesystem can't be mounted. I read that swsusp does not work with ext3 so I changed the fs to ext2. My big problem is that all my other kernels (based on 2.4.19-16mdk) won't boot anymore either. I have to boot from cdrom and then I can mount and chroot my disk disk no problem. Can this have to do with the initrd images? Any pointers how to solve this are welcome. Thanks Jan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[expert] Mandrake Documentation glitch
Hi All, I am not sure if this is the right list to send this. But, I would really appreciate if anyone could forward this to the right list meant specifically for Linux documentation, Mandrake in particular. I came across the following while reading the Mandrake Quick Server Setup documentation as supplied with Mandrake 9. I was reading about installing and configuring the postfix mail server. "The first step is to check that the Postfix server is installed on your computer. If it is not, please use the *rpmdrake* application or type *urpmi apache* in a terminal to install it." It seems a copy and paste from the previous section of Apache was done pretty negligently !! From what I have seen and experienced so far, the most IMPORTANT thing Linux needs now is good DOCUMENTATION. Windows, Mac, all of them have excellent user documentation thus making the user feel at home and not lost. KDE has done a better job in this area with the question mark in the top right corner of almost every window like M$ Windows. GNOME still lacks good documentation support. I don't intend to start any arguments or flames on this. This is just in the common benefit of the Linux community. Re: [expert] iptables : bad option ...
Hi Hans - What you're trying to do is actually a pretty common setup, which is good, cus there are lots of examples. To save yourself some time, there is a program that ships with mandrake called 'draknet' and could be really helpfull for you. Its a nice utility that will walk you through setting up a masquerading setup and firewall, and allow you to share your internet connection with machines on the internet network. It will also set up DHCPD for you on the internal network (which i'm not sure why anyone would recommend against) so your internal network workstations won't need to be manually configured. On top of that, it will let you specify some firewall rules, and set up a decent one for you. Its more or less a front end to iptables, and once you've got the rules set up, you can look at the iptables configuration you have and go from there. Good luck, shout if you have more questions :) Dan http://five2one.org/ hans privat wrote: anyway : here are my facts of my "hopefully running firewall in the future" have 2 ethercards : eth0 is IP 10.0.0.10 and WAN-connected to a ADSL-Modem; eth1 is IP 192.168.10.8 is LAN this machine should be the firewall AND masquerade. Dont't know if it is a good idea to have a dhcp running on it or not.In some docs it will be recommended, some other docs says NO - anyway - first at all a masquerade and firewall should be the first things, which should be realized - so I think.
