Re: [expert] 9.2 and xscreensaver
Have you really been able to get the xscreensaver modules to show up in the KDE Control Center Screensaver module? I'd love to know how it's done. The 9.2 download ISOs had an unfixed oversight that caused the KDE Screensaver modules to disappear. These have been fixed in the updates that have been on the mirrors for a few days. I tried, unsuccessfully to fix the KDE Screensaver problem using several of the methods reported on the lists, but solved it immediately with the update. [expert] Fatal server error strikes
Hi all, I managed to royally mess up my MD 9.1 just before finishing my BitTorrent download and while waiting for my PowerPack to be shipped :-(( Somewhere I found an advice that all font names should have small letters in their names. As not all my fonts were working, I launched Krename and changed the caps to small letters, while waiting for BT, this was probably the stupidest I could have done! I noticed my fonts changing, but not improving. Yesterday I had to go to Windows to do my bank payments (they don't have a Linux version, alas). Afterwards I couldn't start X any longer. I found an X error reading i.a.: quote Using vt 7. Could not init font path element unix/:-1, removing from list. Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'. unquote Restoring all fonts from tarballs I had put on cdrw in preparation for upgrading to 9.2 didn't help anything. I googled for the problem and found several answers, such as: *directory / is full: not in my case ( 3 Gb spare); *restart xfs server; I already tried that in runlevels 3 and 5; no difference. * reinstall all XF86 packages: did that; didn't help. * I restored /etc/XF86Config from tarball on cd: didn't help. * another answer said to delete reference to default font in XF86Config, but there wasn't any, except for an other Mandrake font server. In each case I restarted the xfs server and tried to start X, but it failed. In the last case I waited 10 to 15 minutes and saw an occasional attempt by X to start up (a few coloured lines showing or very fast flashing by of my last terminal screen), but nothing helped. In these cases no login prompt could be reached, nor the kernel messages. I should very much appreciate it if somebody can advise me how to get back in my Mandrake with X. { This message was previously posted to the newbie list, but apparently nobody knew how to help me } Personally I don't know any solution anymore, except reinstalling. [expert] ML 9.2 + Audigy2 + 5.1 + xine
Hi all, I just installed ML 9.2 and was nicely surprised that a lot of the many usual "needfull things" :) worked right out of the box (including painless Radeon 9700 and nforce2 drivers). My main problem now is that though my card is recognised and the "audigy" module is loaded, it works only halfway right. That means that "stereo" sounds work ok (like xmms and such). On the other hand I tried to play a DVD with Xine and almost went nuts. Since the DVD is 5.1 and my recognized soundcard is 5.1 compatible, I expected surround sound on my 5.1 system. No go... I could hear only the front speakers and of course in a lot of scenes the voices were probably on some other speakers as the were very dim although the sound itself (background music and soundeffects) was pretty loud. I thought I have to adjust the sound, but surprisingly in kmix I found only the normal stereo settings to be available. I tried to install the emu10k1 driver from sourceforge, but it spits out a lot of "undefinded symbol" in a lot of other sound modules (weird why it should complain as I do not use those modules at all) when trying to load it and of course it doesn't load - no sound. :( In a last attempt I compiled and installed the latest alsa, but the result was even funnier. xmms and the system sounds work ok (I even hear them in all my speakers), but xine gives no sound output when playing a dvd. The only way to get xine to play some sound is to start it with "xine -A oss", but then am back to square 1 as I still can hear only 2 speakers and no voices no matter how I play with the settings in alsamixer with the 3D and surround settings. I tried to start xine from console to see the output and it complains that it cannot access surround51 device and to check if any other process uses PCM. :/ Have no clue how to find out what that means and how to fix the problem. :( Funny stuff is that in ML 9.1 I could compile and install emu10k1 with no problem and had 5.1 surround sound. :/ Unfortunatelly on 9.1 had lots of problems with motherboard and video drivers so cannot fall back. :( If anyone could help I would really appreciate it. That is the only thing which keeps me from booting ML as my main OS. :( Best regards, Adrian

Re: [expert] Fatal server error strikes
On Tue, 28 Oct 2003 19:47:44 - Dick Gevers [EMAIL PROTECTED] uttered: Restoring all fonts from tarballs I had put on cdrw in preparation for upgrading to 9.2 didn't help anything. Could be the perms are wrong on the fonts that you restored, font server cannot read them. Make sure dirs are searchable, ie. drx-rx-r (I think). That seems out of the question, because I had tarred them to local drive and then burnt them to cdrw, copied the tarballs back to HD and extracted the fonts. Tar is notorious for keeping permissions okay. It's worth checking, no? I googled for the problem and found several answers, such as: *directory / is full: not in my case ( 3 Gb spare); *restart xfs server; I already tried that in runlevels 3 and 5; no difference. * reinstall all XF86 packages: did that; didn't help. * I restored /etc/XF86Config from tarball on cd: didn't help. * another answer said to delete reference to default font in XF86Config, but there wasn't any, except for an other Mandrake font server. Yeah, since it can't find the referenced path, it's automatically deleting it from your config file. Sorry, what do you imply by that. What should (could) I do with this information? I am using Linux only since February, so I am not sure where this can help me. Just an observation. Maybe post the contents of /var/log/XFree86.0.log and we can see if there are any further clues as to what is causing the error. See below. I should very much appreciate it if somebody can advise me how to get back in my Mandrake with X. { This message was previously posted to the newbie list, but apparently nobody knew how to help me } Personally I don't know any solution anymore, except reinstalling. But I hope somebody has an easier solution. In XF86Config-4, try commenting out the line: Load type1 Yes, I did some more googling and found one other similar piece of advice, so I commented out a line reading Load unix/:-1 and (as per that advice) deleted all similar looking file from /tmp and /home/dvg/tmp. The result was the same as before, though. Yeah, if you see in the log, it's loading the type 1 fonts without error anyway. which is, IIRC, where X tries to load the default XFS fonts. AFAIK, XFS really isn't even necessary now with Freetype handling font rendering. These are wld guesses, but hey, you never know. Best of luck. Thanks a bunch, Haywire. I hope somebody knows a solution. I'm betting on the fontpath not being searchable (ie. wrong perms), but I'm no Xpert;-) What are the fontpaths listed in your XF86Config-4 and what are the perms on those directories? I looked at everthing in /etc/X11 but no joy sorry, maybe i don't read perfect your mail. but if i understand clearly now, you want change default color of root window if you execute X server for example handy, right? hm, when we look precise into srpm file of XFree86, then we can find patch with this name: XFree86-4.2.99.3-mandrakelinux-blue.patch.bz2. after fast check, imho this is related to your question, and this patch sets default color of root window. if i remember right, i'v played with this setting and again if i remember right this can be override with system setting. but sorry, i don't know after some researching where exactly. my tip is somewhere in Xresources file, if it is possible to change color of root window without patching sources.. -- member of Advanced InternetWorks group - http://www.ainetworks.sk professional home page - http://tibor.pittich.sk personal home page - http://c0re.phuture.sk pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

Re: [expert] Not all Mandrake 9.2 mirrors are the same
Hi Anton, I already know about the http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/ site, but my point was check out the mirror that you are using, as they are not all the same, e.g. http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/Mandrake/9.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/ contains half the amount of files than the mirror at http://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/Mandrake/9.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/ both the mirrors are listed on http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/ site, and can be selected in the source main section.. people could be confused thinking that those 2 mirrors are the same. I have noticed that some of the mirrors have a cut down main section. There are various different kinds of repository (or whatever its called). Some have what is on the disk, some updates, some illegal stuff (like stuff to allow watching dvds, which is illegal!, no worries about viruses though...its pretty much the mandrake people it seems to me...or people pretty close anyway), some other java stuff and the great contribs. There may be some variation in what you get on the different mirrors (eg planetmirror, club-internet, etc) but I'm not sure. It has been a bit of a nightmare finding the kernel-source files, that are definitely NOT everywhere. Hope this is fairly close to the mark...If you just want repositories (no urpmi)then this should at least make clearer what the options are. O.K. in the past I have been using http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/mandrake/9.2 but the mirror there this time is very differnet, it's really just a mirror of the continence of the download edition of Mandrake 9.2, no contribs etc.. I have checked out http://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/Mandrake/9.2/ it's a very different mirror, does anyone know what's happening with the mirroring of Mandrake 9.2, and what would be best mirror to use for someone in Australia, definitely public.planetmirror.com is not a good mirror for Mandrake 9.2. [expert] Mounting a floppy
Is it possible to set up a floppy to be mounted as ext2 or DOS without the use of supermount? I see in the default installation, that /dev/fd0 is using the term auto instead of specifying which file system. It doesn't seem to be covered under the mount or fstab man pages, so I am assuming its a supermount term. And I prefer to not use supermount, I prefer the KDE mounting tools, as supermount messes with my USB Camera. Rob -- Linux: For the people, by the people.
