[expert] Kernel panic during installation
When I attempt to install LM 8.0 on my computer it hangs during the initial load of the kernel with an error message like this: VFS error: Unable to mount root device "" or 08:05 Please set a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: Unable to mount root filesystem on 08:05 I have tried setting root= to /dev/ram /dev/ram1 and such, but I have been unable to get the installation working. This computer has no problems with the 7.0 and 7.1 installation routines, so I was wondering if you had any sudgestions. Thanks in advance. Well, the system did not freeze, it tried to continue the init procedure, but it could not find any files, so I saw a lot of red 'failed' since it could not find any files on /. I believe that if /usr, /bin and /sbin had been on different partitions, most of the programs would have started, but no log would be recorded, since I have /var on /. I believe that mount reads the fstab file from the beginning to the end, so hdc7 was mounted as / when fstab told mount to mount it as swap, if this is the case, shouldn't mount have aborted that mount, said so and moved on? Anton Graham wrote: > Hmm... LILO is booting the correct partition as root, or you would get > no init found. So, fstab must not be correct. Double check that it's > mount point for / matches what lilo thinks the root is. I double checked fstab, the mount point for / was correct. I did however discover that /dev/hdc7 had been were my swap partition was located, so it tried to mount /dev/hdc7 twice, first as / and then as swap. I changed the mount point for swap to /dev/hdc6 and it booted without a problem. So, new question: Shouldn't the mounting of /dev/hdc7 for the second time as swap just have failed, instead of unmounting /? Linux should be able to boot without a swap partition shouldn't it? [expert] Unable to mount root filesystem - No boot possible
I was deleting a couple of minor partitions so that I could move /usr to a larger one, but the root filesystem moved from /dev/hdc8 to /dev/hdc7 in the process. Realizing that I had not updated Lilo to this change, I rebooted with the 7.0 rescue disk, I was able to create a new Lilo boot disk, I have updated /etc/fstab, but I am still unable to boot Mandrake. It loads init ver 2.77 mount /proc and sets the time, but it fails to mount / making the rest of the boot process impossible. I am not sure what I should do next, what have I forgotten? The systems feels no slower than it was with RedHat 5.2 or 6.0, so if the Mandrake code is just i586 optimized I will stick with it and recompile for i486 RPM by RPM. Well, I used RedHat before, but I could not get my ISDN TA card to function, so that is not an option, besides, I like Mandrake. Well, I am not any other problems which could relate to the i486/i586 code , so I doubt that is the main reason for those signal 11s. It could be the cause of pppd crashing the entire system when doing as 'killall pppd' though, but I doubt it. Well, thanks anyway. [expert] GCC/make gets random signal 11s
When I am compiling something large, like a new kernel or Apache, GCC/make has a tendency to receive a signal 11 several times during the process, forcing me to restart make. I did not observe this when running RedHat so I was wondering if it could be the Mandrake optimisation of the kernel. (Happens on original 7.0 kernel as well as 2.2.16-9mdk-secure. Or is this just the price for running i586 optimized code on a i486? May you live long and spamless, Andreas Bergstrøm -- HTTP://www.thespambuster.net/ Fight Spam!
