RE: [expert] I cant print with samba

1999-12-15 Thread BOUCARON Julien CNET/DSE/SOP

May be , something wrong while configurating your printer with printtool
certainly :

The domain name for example is like that : "MYDOMAIN.COM" and not
"mydomain.com" .

Be careful on the name of the ressource under Win , a printer can be called
"HP-Printer1" in the Network Neigh and the real name of the shared
ressource is "HP-Printer1-PCL" .
See the properties ...

See if you can log on the service via "smbclient SERVER\\service -U
my_login -W MYDOMAIN.COM" .

Now reconfigure the printer with "printtools" .

After that restart your lpd daemon with "printtools" ( or
/etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd restart ) and try printing a test page.
If you caught an error message like " lpr can't connect " ... go on you
console and launch "lpc" and type "down all" and after "up all".

If the printer is well configurated and have a network sock , try using the
Unix lp system instead of the SMB ,
it will be more quicker to print with than using SMB and a Micro$oft
machine.
As you want.

I hope that it will work .
Bye !

Steve,
Were you using Top to see application activity? I think you probably
were.
When Top shows 50% CPU being used in a dual CPU system, that means that the
ripper/encoder were using all of 1 CPU. KPM shows things a little
differently.

Anyways.. To answer your question. If you want a single application to use
both CPUs, it has to be capable of multi-threading. Without that, the
program
can never use more than 1 CPU at a time. I'm not aware of too many
applications that can do that. I know Photoshop when used with NT can use
more
than 1 CPU.
But, there is an advantage.. Take the CD Ripping and Encoding for example.
I
use Krabber with CD Paranoia and Bladenc. Krabber allows you to start more
than 1 encoder at a time. So, I have it start 2. That way, the CD is done
ripping in 1/2 the time. Or, I can run Seti@HOME reniced at 20 and still
have
plenty of horsepower left to do other things so that it gets full use of the
other processor. I can also compile apps and still do other things while
the
app compiles.

Same direction of precedent answer , if the app is not multithread don't
expect more.
But as it was told before, you should use many encoders in parallel, or try
to multithread your encoder ( it exists a multithread lib for SMP i think )
ex : bladeenc & bladeenc ..
Warning -> compiling a kernel , see the SMP linux page. ( prblm with make
depends i think )

_ Launch Enlightenment with " enlightenment "

Other Tip :
_ To kill a X Server with a X mouse pointer and a grey background type

RE: [expert] smtpd ???

Because , the Mandrake 6.0 SMTP service don't use the inetd super daemon .
The de facto SMTP server on Mandrake 6.0 is PostFix (or SendMail) , so your
will have
html docs in the /usr/doc/postfix. , a new version is on the master site
of
postfix http://www.postfix.org/ .
So launch the "setup" program and see which services are running on your
computer.
The configuration directory is in /etc/postfix ...
So , good reading ...

Did you copy /usr/src/linux/System.Map to /boot? If not, you need to
do so, as well as editing lilo.conf and re-running /sbin/lilo. You
have to do this whenever you compile a kernel. I'm thinking that you
do NOT need to do this if you just use an RPM of the kernel, that it
should do this for you automatically.

[expert] HOWTO to fix Version problem with Kernel Modules and Services

1999-09-10 Thread BOUCARON Julien CNET/DSE/SOP

Fixing the bad version problem :

1) Go in the Kernel Source Root Directory
2) Copy the System.map file into /boot and rename the file
System.map.kernel version for example
3) Change the Symbolic Link System.map in /boot that it points to your
current kernel System.map file you have
already put into.
4) Verify the Symbolic Link , and reboot.

RE: [expert] Kernel Modules and Version Numbers

Hello,

I caught an other trouble with the same consequence , while installing
Mandrake 5.3 and 6.0 on a Fujitsu Laptop which has a DEC Tulip Eth Card.
DEC Tulip chipset is on many cards but DEC ( Compaq) lets the manufacturers
of Eth Card using this chipset change the microcode of the Chip, so that
not all the DEC Tulip Eth Card are supported , so if you know exactly the
model of you card , have a look on a HOWTO, FAQ or in the kernel source of
the tulip module you're using.
After fixing the Version problem ( i got the same problem and no answer yet
) , try also the "de4x5" module if you got other trouble , it is also a DEC
Tulip driver.
For the Fujitsu Laptop i got no problem on 10 and 100 Mb LAN using this
module.

The driver doesn't support your friend's card (otherwise it wouldn't make
sense
for the hardware manufucturer to supply a driver on his own, would it? ;-))

Could you please:

rpm -q kernel-source
rpm -q kernel
rpm -q kernel-headers

Do the versions match? The kernel section has been quite busy during the

If I recall correctly the problems with the eicon and wavefront are known,
but
doesn't seem to affect the drivers.

fine but I wanted a more customized kernel ( can't leave things alone ). I
installed the headers and source rpms, did xconfig, make dep, make modules,
make modules_install, made a new initrd file and updated lilo. All that
went fine. On restart with new kernel all looks the same, it finds my 2940
gives the message I get every time about auto termination laods the
instructions and a few other kernel related things then it seems to find
another 2940?. It gives the termination warning says it found 2 scsi busses
then gives this error: SCSI host 1 abort (pid 19) timed out SCSI bus is
being reset for host 1 bus 0. Then it gives the same error but adds -trying
harder after SCSI host 1 abort (pid19) timed out and repeats that error
endlessly.
I restarted with my old "stock" 2.2.9-27mdk kernel and now it gives an
unresolved symbol error on what looks like every module ( because there is
alot of these errors ). Sytem booted fine otherwise. I did not use it much
to see what was not working, just shut down in disgust.
