RE: [expert] Wireless NICs
I have a linksys access point and it has good transmission but if you want to measure it use wavmon. You can set up an omni dir antenna to get a little more range. Setup a VPN for security would be a good measure. I just bought the house across the street from my current home. HouseA has DSL service and my entire network configured. I would like to share the DSL connection from one house to the other. Has anyone here experimented with any of the wireless options on Mandrake (or any Linux for that matter)? What's the throughput like? Does weather adversely affect the transmissions speeds? What is the range? Thanks for any pointers. Kwan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] 8.2 msec security issue
Mandrake 8.2 has a default security setting that leaves users' home directories world readable. I just read that you can enter other user's home directories and subdirectories and read the files. The Mandrake msec level by default choice is Standard. If you chmod each user's home dir to 700, upon reboot it reverts back to what it was before. If setting are changed in the Mandrake Control Center from Standard to High then users home dir is 711, 700 would be better though. Any thoughts? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I have the same problem sometimes when running gnome, when I bring up the control center and look at the screen saver it prompts me reset X11.. dave -Original Message- From: Tibbetts, Ric [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, June 12, 2002 7:50 To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [expert] X Freezes On Thu, 2002-06-06 at 19:56, Andrew Berry wrote: I am running: Mandrake 8.2, KDE3, IceWM, XFree86 4.2.0. It stops responding to everything (mouse, keyboard, CTRL+ALT+BKSPC). This only happens when I am running X11. I haven't found a pattern that shows a specific app causing the freeze. I have had combinations of IceWM, KDE2.2 and 3, having combinations of StarOffice5.2, Konquoror, FreeAmp, and Ogg123, open when a crash occurs. I don't think that its a hardware issue, as this never happens under Win98SE, and HardDrake properly detected all my hardware. I have tried looking in some log files in /var/log to find a pattern. No luck. My questions: 1. Is there a systematic way to detemine what is causing the crashes? 2. What specific log files should I look at? 3. Anyone else had this problem? Fixes? FWIW: I'm having the same problem on an older IBM PC. Irritating! I'm running MDK 8.2 on another PC at home, and it behaves perfectly. The difference may indeed XFree86 4.0. I'm running 3.x at home. I haven't tried it on the one that freezes up yet. Might be worth a try. Ric Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

RE: [expert] WireLess Antena
let me get this right you want to find wireless access points with your antenna. If that's the case use net-stumbler for windows or wavemon for linux, you will need the proper wireless card to do this (orinoco or cisco). These cards seem to have many packages out available to browse the network. Happy war-driving. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
RE: [expert] Orinoco wireless and MDK 7.2
ok go here http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ftp/ download the pcmcia-cs-3.1.30.tar.gz, that's the one I have and it works. Then go to the Orinoco web site and download the Linux driver, the latest one. here http://www.orinocowireless.com/ find the client products and download the driver. Next you un tar the pcmcia-cs-3.1.30 and cp the Orinoco drive file, still zipped up in that directory and then untar it. The file is a WLL something or other. Once this is done read the README file there are 3 of them, you have to run a ./Build and a ./Install it will ask you to point stuff to where the Linux directory is, you might want to know exactly where that file is. I accepted all the defaults and then cd to /etc/rc.d/init.d/ ./pcmcia restart and a ./network restart sometime I had to do this twice and I was on line.. [expert] auto login on 8.2
I have just loaded 8.2 and so far it is working, got my orinoco card to work without a hitch. One question though maybe I did this on installation but when I boot up it auto logs into my user directory. How do I change this so it will ask for a password. I looked in userdrake and could not find it, is there anyway to change this in terminal or do I use one of the gooie interface. thanks Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] 8.0 good :-) - 8.1 bad :-(
I have decided to go with ManDrake 8.0 instead of 8.1 because of the difficultly with it recognizing my cd/dvd drive or my floppy drive (Dell Inspiron 4000). I gave in and loaded 8.0 last night and it installed without a hitch. Thanks to all the experts on this subject I was finally able to realize that I needed to install 8.0 and not 8.1. Its funny if I had a question about installing AOL on LM I would get at least 10 replies back within a half hour. I guess this subject is just to tough a topic for the expert community I will try the newbie forum. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
