The market never really materialized so there is no current distro for Sparc from either, last I checked. Of course, with Solaris running, you can probably find gcc and compile the rpm utility and go from there... It should(TM) be possible to roll your own. Civileme SuSE has SPARC version of their distibution version 7.3, which I use in our ultrasparc servers, working rather well (kernel 2.4.14, reiserfs, ...). Check out UltraLinux site (www.ultralinux.org), there you can find information of distributions which support SPARC. Gentoo Linux seems to be most resent at the moment. There is also project called Aurora SPARC. Aurora is a project to port the current Red Hat packages to the SPARC, so I guess that is closest you can get. If you wish to execute a programme or application, you must invoke it by typing a ./ a dot and a slash together right up against the file name of the executable, lets say the file name was xcdroast well, one would type ./xcdroastto get it to run, this is for security purposes because you should not put . in your path or else someone could bust into your unix system. Re: [expert] redhat vs mandrake
I have a dualboot system, Mandrake on the first partition because the e mail, web and ftp server both work out of the box, RedHat does not. The only use I get from RedHat is that the compiler seems to work when I want to install and run wxGTKwindows libraries, and audacity audio editing software, everything else in RedHat is broken, but on my RedHat it is KDE's Dcopserver that I cannot seem to fix, I can't even log into kde session, I have to use gnome, can't even run any kde apps! Bugger. (scuse my french) I can't get Mandrake's compiler to compile anything, whether I stick with the install default or upgrade to gcc3, but, I'm sticking with Mandrake because the web, ftp, and e mail servers all work great straight from the box. I will just boot into RedHat to use my audio editor, but that is all, so we share similar sentiments. This you may find interesting, a budd and me got mdk8.1 to run on an old IBM PC 520 server, well sort of. It also does not find the raid array, which I believe is an Adaptec 7870 or 7078 or something like that. The video is really wierd too, what should be the red background of the root log in, is a strange dirty yellow crosshatch pattern for a few minutes, then it is red like it should be, wierd. I have managet to get SoundForge 4.5 running under Wine, and, oddly, the monster soft-synth Reaktor works under wine as well. Windows still slaughter's Linux in this area, I'm afraid. I have, however, seen that there is some progress in this area with Demudi. But still, there are no apps available that meet my demands. -Original Message- From: Tom Badran [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2001 11:21 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] problem with linux On Tuesday 27 Nov 2001 4:04 pm, you wrote: The real problem with linux, for me anyways, is that I can't record music on it. Period. This is one area that linux destroys windows on as far as i am concerned. Just take grip - gets the names of the songs artists of a cd from the net, transparently, Records them to your choice of ogg/mp3 and they are there to listen to, and tagged properly. I can also play the cd at the same time as it is being copied. Its fast, it organises your collection into suitable directories, it names your files properly, cleans up after itself, and doesnt limit my choice of music player. What more can you want? Does windows support DSP on the SBLive card? No, but linux does. Does windows now actually try and lower the quality of digital ports on sound cards? Yes, but linux doesnt. Re: [expert] Extras in the DVD release
HEAR HEAR!! Well spoken! On Saturday 24 November 2001 03:17 pm, Jose M. Sanchez wrote: No you are approaching this the wrong way. The DVD version is touted as containing other packages available to the end user. As a result many people purchase this package expecting ALL of those listed applications to be available on the DVD. This is what leaves the ripped off feeling. It would have been far better NOT to have included these demo packages or at least not have listed them the way your marketing people have as an enticement to purchase the Prosuite. What you are doing is effectively making everyone feel short changed. That said, yes you can provide bundled in commercial packages at added cost on additional cds provided the end user is fully cognizant of what they are getting. A Game release version of Linux should not only be tailored to be game friendly but ideally should include a full title or two, even if this brings up the price. Eh, wait, that's exactly what you did! Mandrake is in a unique position, in that it can negociate deals with the producers to provide fully bundled in apps at a low cost. When you list extra applications as included, this is what we expect. The assumption is that the added cost is to pay for these apps. As an end user, if I'm popping extra money for a pro version or the like, the first thing I do is look to see what is included. I did this when looking at the Pro-suite release... Oooh it looked nice, all those extra apps listed in the matrix. Well I get the DVD product only to find that there really ARE NO extra apps, other than the few Mandrakized RPM's for the free apps already available on the internet. Hmmm. Not a good buy IMHO. If I'd have been told that I could get the 3CD set, but for 20.00 more I'd get another CD with the Mandrakized RPM's, I'd have gone for the latter and felt pretty good about it. As it is, sorry Civilme, Mandrake's marketing people don't get it. Remember I'm merely voicing my displeasure. This represents a minimum of 100 or so people who feel likewise but never bother posting messages about this. Pointing to other releases is also a non-sequitor, who cares? I'm only going by what is posted on Mandrake's web site which is misleading. -JMS |-Original Message- |From: civileme [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] |Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2001 3:57 PM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 'Mike Tracy Holt' |Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: Re: [expert] Extras in the DVD release | |On Saturday 24 November 2001 10:29 am, Jose M. 1. NAT doesn't work. I can access internet from Linux machine but not from other intranet machines. 2. If I use nmap to see what ports are open on the linux firewall machine it still reports that ports other than 22,80,443 25 (which I wanted open) are still open, eg like port 631 which is used by CUPS. Is ext3 more stable or reiser? On Wednesday 22 August 2001 01:23 pm, so spoke [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I'm sure most on the list have already read the /. article about RH shipping ext3 with their 7.2 release so I was just curious if Mandrake's going to do the same. I realise reiserfs is already offered (and I use it on nearly all of my machines), but what was probably one of the biggest reasons that made me move over from RH to Mandrake was that one had a _choice_ in what filesystem(s) they wanted to have on their box. It wasn't RH saying, you're going to take ext2 and you're going to like it, but rather Mandrake saying, you have all of these options available to you. I simply wanted to see if ext3 would be yet another option available in the future to Mandrake users. Cheers, -Charlie PS: I haven't played with the 8.1 beta so if it's already in there, I apologise and please ignore this email. Re: [expert] cd-rw in 2.2.17 error
If you have an iso file then you just need to use cdrecord. BTW, do you have cdrecord installed? If you have then: 1. first find where is your CD-RW drive: cdrecord -scanbus This will produce some output like this: scsibus0: 0,0,0 0) * 0,1,0 1) * 0,2,0 2) * 0,3,0 3) * 0,4,0 4) * 0,5,0 5) * 0,6,0 6) 'SAF ' 'CD-RW4224S ' '1.41' Removable CD-ROM 0,7,0 7) * Now you know your CD-RW is "0,6,0". So use that. cdrecord dev=0,6,0 /home/eric/1-8.0-Traktopel-beta1-i586.iso and that's it. I would suggest you to read the cdrecord man page before actually burning a CD, otherwise you may end up burning a coaster. If you don't see anything as the output of 'cdrecord -scanbus', then I would suggest you to read the CD-Writing Howto http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html. eric wrote: so if I have a iso in /home/1-8.0-Traktopel-beta1-i586.iso want to copy to cdrw disk(blank) what should I do?
