[expert] Critcal Pain in the Arse Problem #2
I have asked this question several times before under different subjects, but still no answer and I still haven't found a solution myself yet. My problem is that NOT ANY of the window managers or desktops will start correctly from a cold boot, but require a reset. When I turn on my computer for the first time, it goes thru the bootup process without any errors, but when starting into X, there is a slight pause of 4 or 5 seconds then the background screen appears, after a bit you see the X pointer then the watch(which face changes from white to transparent several times) then the KDE splash screen starts to slowly draw. At this point, I can sometimes do a ctl-alt F1 and get to console mode and do a shutdown restart from there, but sometimes not. If I wait till the icons start to appear, the system is locked up and I have to do a reset. After a reset, the system goes thru the bootup process again, doinf a fsck because the system was shut down improperly the comes up normally, Music and all. The same thing happens with Gnome. I have tried with and without autologin, and with and without Aurora... no change. Starting in run level 3 and doing startx, I get the same thing. My system is a AMD K6 2+ 450 with 64 mb ram. This is LM 7.2 I did not have this problem with a highly updated 7.1 I also have tried KDE2.0. 2.01 and 2.1.0 Any help on this would be highly appreciated. Jerry -- Gerald Williams Words Matter! [expert] boot up problem
Hi, I asked this question before under a different subject, but I still haven't found a solution yet. My problem is that when I do a cold boot, the system slowly freezes after starting X. I see the splash screen slowly start to come up, and after a bit the desktop icons come up in the same spot(one on top of the other) at this point, you cannot get to a console as no keys work. If I do a reset, the system does a fsck and afterwards comes up like it's supposed to. This happens with KDE and Gnome. If I don't use the autologin but use kdm or gdm, the same thing happens. If I start the system in run level 3 instead of 5, I get the same thing. Any idea what the problem could be, or where I should look? Hopefully, Jerry -- Gerald Williams Words Matter! On my box, which has an AMD K6 2+ 450 cpu, the i686 rpms do not work. There are a lot of error messages/warnings and several of the packages core dump during the install. I backed out okay and reinstalled the 4.0.1 rpms from the CD. I will wait...(g) As they say, "I was lucky this time". Thanks again to all Jerry -- Gerald Williams Words Matter! Bangkok, Thailand
[expert] XFree86 for i686 architecture
There are some xfree86 rpms for the i686 architecture on the unsupported site. My question, and I believe it was asked before with no reply that I saw, are they okay to use on a pentium based machine? When I try to install them, I get the error message that they are for the wrong architecture. I believe I can use --ignorearch to bypass this, but has anyone tried this? Awaiting anyones reply before I screw-up royaly. Merry Christmas all... Jerry -- Gerald Williams Words Matter! Bangkok, Thailand

[expert] wiered problem
Since I upgraded from LM7.1++( 7.1 { updates and a whole lotta cooker) to 7.2, I had this problem when cold booting. Everything looks okay when going thru the boot process, but when it leaves the login screen to go to X and start KDE, there seems to be a delay. The KDE splash screens starts to draw very slowly, sort of a few lines at a time. All the icons are stuck, for want of a better term, at the top of the screen. You cannot go to a console from here. basicly no key works. If I restart the machine by hitting the reset button, after fsck goes thru it's check, it boot's normally. If I go to a console from X, and then try to return later, X is frozen/locked up tight. I have tried starting X from the console, and I have the same problem on a cold boot. I have tried with and without autologin. Same results. If the chooser window comes up, it draws slow. I have tried reinstalling my distro, and that didn't help either. I have also upgraded from KDE2.0 to 2.0.1 to 2.10(Chris's files work great , btw) and that didn't help either. I hope this is clear enough(probably not). Any clues?? I have a feeling the problem lies with the cfengine. Is there any reason I need it for a dial-up internet connection/standalone system? Please help. It looks bad when a grown man cries. If anyone has > a fix for this I'd like to hear it. > > Thanks, > Benjamin Ellis If you are running KDE2, you probably have the enviroment set to where qt2 and the KDE2 library files are located. I got around that problem by putting the following in a script, and making it executible. #!/bin/sh export KDEDIR=/opt/kde export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt export PATH=$KDEDIR/bin:$PATH export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$KDEDIR/lib:$QTDIR/lib ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde After you do the config, you can go ahead and make, make install as usual. You will also need to change the paths to suit your box. Hope it helps. Jerry -- Gerald Williams -- Words Matter! I switched over from 1.1.2 completely at the 1.93 beta because I wanted to use Koffice. I also completely deleted all of kde1.1.2 before installing the new files in /usr. I've had a problem with no sound and a problem with Wordperfect Office 2000 not working. I'm still trying to sort out the wpo problem. I should add I'm running the 2.2.17 kernel and xfree86 4.01.
