Sorry, just the ping command. In other words I did not get a host unavailable, or unreachable message. Just ping addr.addr.addr.addr and hang until ctl-c terminate. 1. Both WIN98 and Linux Mandrake computers hang when trying to command line ping the other. 2. My /etc/modules.conf contains only alias eth0 3c59x for this adapter; no io/irq info too. 3. When the dual boot machine is up under Linux Mandrake I still do not have these two even pinging each other. The ping of each other IP addresses simply hangs with out even timing out. Below is some more information if someone would have mercy on me. I would be grateful for any suggestions. P.S. When both machine are booted into WIN98 they communicate just fine, mapping shares, pinging each other, etc. Also I have the ppp0 interface working now on Linux. [expert] Ethernet LAN not working
Recently I installed an 3COM 3C905C Ethernet card in my computer. Using a cross over cable I am attempting to get it to talk to a WIN98 machine with the same NIC. I went into linuxconf and entered a unique IP address for eth0. Problem is it refuses to talk to the other machine. I can find no evidence of network activity and worse my ppp0 interface is now NOT working either (it did prior to this modification). This should be simple. Could someone please help me diagnose this problem? Jon H. Linux 7.2

I am running Mandrake 7.2, kernel-2.2.17, KDE 2.1 on both a laptop and a desktop machine. This problem occurs on both. I have an email account that I must access via an Outlook web interface, which uses javascript. I can access it and work with it fine with mozilla or netscape but konqueror goes retarded if I try to access it. I go to the web login page and enter my name, then a dialog box comes up asking for my login and password. Fine. When I enter the required information (in konqueror), it appears to try to download the page and then asks with what app I wish to open it up (?!?). I select "konqueror" and then I get an error message as follows: File:/home/praedor/.kde/share/apps/kfmexec/tmp/1463.0.LogonFrm.asp does not exist Of COURSE it doesn't exist, it's a website not a file on my system. Why is konqueror doing this? Why can't it handle opening a simple URL or webpage that netscape and mozilla has no problems with? I have javascript enabled for konqueror and this web email interface is laden with javascript. -- Praedor Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain. ---

I use it every day, and it is extensible. I would have preferred to see it written in Python, but it is rather easily extensible in perl (wishing I was handier with perl). But its real use comes in with something like this list. When you have no idea what the person on the receiving end of your advice is really capable of doing, webmin is a good tool to recommend for investigation of things. Almost anyone can follow the webmin orchestrated procedures to discover what might be wrong or needed. I probably should recommend it more than I do. But, when not configured properly, it is as much a problem as BackOrifice is to windoiws (Webmin's power in the hands of a BlackHat would make one shudder), so I tend to be careful. Civileme

[expert] Modem and serial port(s)
Each and every time I install a release of Mandrake Linux I lose my internal US Robotics 56K modems ability to be recognized. I takes me at least a day to remember that last time I encountered this I had to rebuild the kernel without the serial port driver that seems to usurp my serial ports before my modem (ISA type) can be initialized to use IRQ 3 or 4 and the appropriate address. Is there any way to handle this without rebuilding the kernel. I am not afraid of doing this but what if I want to use a serial port and my modem? Thanks in advance, Jon
