[expert] Am I the ONLY one or does 8.2 REALLY Stink??????????

2002-03-22 Thread Larry Blodgett

Something is strange in Gotham City. I have been using Mandrake from
the beginning. I am a big fan but the 8.2 will not configure
correctly in so many different ways it is hard to list them all.
Network access is not only corrupted but it even corrupts the whole
network. I have installed several times on several machines and have
found major process corruption. I maybe wrong but there seems to bed
a real problem here. The worse problem is the inability to set up
any form of network. TCPIP just doesn't work. I always install
using expert mode in case your wondering. My MD5 checked good.
Someway in the final release poison was put into the mix or something
like that.

I subscribed yesterday and I received an email this morning

I received mine also. Mine did not work. I signed on and the site
seemed to have me signed on but all the selections acted as if I had
not signed on. I emailed the webmaster and I have not heard from it
yet, probably because of the time difference. The only thing I can
assume is that my account was not set up properly. I am glad it

Re: [expert] xfce-new -- Subscription info

2001-03-19 Thread Larry Blodgett

Ok Benjamin I finally had to hard boot my machine (6 months of
stability) all because of xfce. Maybe you can explain how this
happened. I fired up xfce and I must admit it looks really cool so I
let it run. When my monitor went into power save I simply hit the
mouse (as I always do in KDE) and nothing happened, I then hit the
space bar, nothing happened. My screen was black and I could not get
the video to come back (I even tried ctr-alt-delete). Finally in
disgust I hit the hard reset button and I am now back in KDE. What
did I do wrong

Re: [expert] Sendmail vs Postfix!!

2001-03-09 Thread Larry Blodgett

Dan is right about the question. Is it Qmail or Postfix?

Qmail is just as secure (if not more) as Postfix and much easier to
configure and manage. Mandrake now comes with sendmail and Postfix
but I wish they would have included Qmail. I wonder why they left
Qmail out?

Just my two cents.

Do you think sendmail is more secure than postfix as MTA's? Why?

As Mike said...
Sendmail: Wasn't written by Weitse Venema, who is God.
 Postfix: was.
Weitse also wrote TCP wrappers.
Postfix is definitely more secure and easier to administer than
sendmail.

Your choice should not be between sendmail vs. postfix, it should
be Qmail vs. Postfix, which are both secure.

Postfix does the job for me.
Thanks... Dan.

Simple: Postfix is much more secure.

Hi:

I would like to know the opinion of you about Postfix and Sendmail as MTA.
Why?, because I have always used Sendmail and now I got a Mandrake 7.2

how secure, how easy to configurate is.
Waiting for your answers.

Re: [expert] Linux on PPC

2000-10-12 Thread Larry Blodgett

Eric,
I know exactly how you feel, I too am a dedicated Mac user and I also
am greatly attracted to Linux. I think there is a common spirit
between MacOS and Linux that is not shared by the abusive world of
Microsoft. OSX will of course allow for a unix type os to be
supported by Apple people. Only time will tell and I wonder also if
LinuxPPC will be able to make it against all odds.

I also have linuxPPC running on a G3. However at this point it is
just an amusement for me. My "real" linux boxes are all intel
hardware. Why? The Mac still remains for me far more useful and
enjoyable as a desktop machine (much unlike windows on my intel
machines) and very rarely crashes despite a boat load of extensions
and continuously having at least a half dozen programs open at once.

Once OSX ships I think it will clearly initially be the choice as a
desktop machine for most Mac heads like myself (we generally love
our operating system for the most part, as opposed to tolerating it
like much of the windows community). However, I don't know how long
that choice will be so clear as linux matures to a more enjoyable
experience for the average desktop user. It will be especially
interesting to see how the Eazel Gnome project (former Mac
designers) competes with OSX for the hearts of the Mac users!

Re: [expert] Fwd: Network - Print server Question

2000-09-17 Thread Larry Blodgett

There is a test button on the server box that prints out all sorts of
good stuff about the status and IP number.

I found my problem by the following command.

/sbin/route add -host 192.0.0.192 eth0

Then everything went fine.

Thanks for all you help and suggestions.

If you can't ping or telnet to it, then I would make absolutely sure
that it is properly connected to the network. You may not even have a
working connection.

What's more -- if you can't ping or telnet to it, how do you know that
it has an IP of 192.0.0.192? Does it have an LED display that tells you
this? If no, then *assume nothing*. Have you tried setting the network
mask on one of your machines to 255.0.0.0 before you tried to ping it?

I am a little blown away that HP would dare let a print server *default*
to a non-private IP. That's really unprofessional. I would check again.

Have you read the JetDirect documentation? Have you looked at HPs
web-site? Print servers like it when you read the manual =) (speaking
from personal experience).

[expert] Pointer Problems

2000-09-10 Thread Larry Blodgett

Here is a strange problem. I just installed Mandrake 7.1 on a new
machine. And when I run KDE or Gnome, I get a white box about 1/2 by
1/2 inch on my 15 inch monitor screen. It seems I don't have the
actual pointer icon. The upper left hand corner of the white square
seems to function the same as the end of the pointer.

I have now installed several distros and they all exhibit the same
perplexing problem. It is getting scary, I am contemplating putting
my W98 drive in the drive bay just to check the pointer (I told you
it was getting scary).

Could this be a mother board problem? (Gigabyte Duron board)

[expert] Lilo questions????

2000-06-19 Thread Larry Blodgett

Steve Litt's article (Litt's Lilo Lessons) is without doubt the best
article I have ever read on lilo.

But as you know knowledge is a dangerous thing and I have a few
simple questions.

(I have sent them to Steve but he may not answer and I know many of
you are just as knowledgeable)

My disk is setup in the following partitions.

hda1 /boot 100 Meg
hda2 / (for DOS) 2 Gig
hda3 / (for Slackware 7.0) 2 Gig
hda4 extended
hda5 / (for Mandrake 7.1) 2 Gig
hda6 / (for Caldera 2.4) 2 Gig
hda7 / (for Experimental) 2 Gig
hda8 / (for CDRW scratch) 800 Meg
hda9 / (for swap) 100 Meg

question 1 Do I set hda1, hda2, hda3, hda5, hda6 and hda7 to
bootable in cfdisk?

question 2 Where is the lilo that contains the information that sets
up all the partitions?

question 3 What is the function of hda1? I assume it holds common
information about the overall setup.

question 4 Since, there is a /boot in all the distribution roots how
does the /boot (hda1) function?
