[expert] 9.2 and BootDisk

2003-11-19 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Forgive me if this has been discussed.

I tried it with 3 different machines, 4 different
floppies.
A Error Occurred. mkbootdisk failed or
Unable to properly close mkbootdisk, No space left on
device

My problem is that I have dualboot scenarios..with
winblows.and its boot loader HAS to remain the
default for some internal reasons. So linux is at
/dev/hda7

Usually I create a bootdisk during istall, and use it
to get back in linux, after perform a dd of the
bootsector. Is this a known problem?

_Thanks

Richard

[expert] Which Mandrake to Buy?

2003-11-17 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
OK,

I have some money, would like to support Mandy as much
as I like using it. I am intending to upgrade an 8.2
machine (not updates for it anymore, even security,
right?), who basic function is running 2 webservers,
(virtual) and as an anonymous ftp server. The anonyftp
files are on a promisetech raid array, hooked with an
adaptec 29160 scsi card.

The download version of 8.2 worked 100% for me. Now
that i was considering purchasing the 9.2, I can see
lots of versions out therePowerpack, Pro-Suite,
Discovery, Corporate Server!!

It is not for home usebut yet don't need all the
business/selling language associated with the
versions...all I need is a Good working Mandrake 9.2,
whereby I can download updates without passwords!! as
I have always done with 8.2. Basically same Freedom,
but not Free ($0.00) We all understand the process
consumes money!

Which one should I go for?

OK, the consesus seems to be buying Mandrake Club
membership, and most ppl prefer the download edition.
(mandrake, maybe dont spend too much time making all
those other editions...)

I am just hoping Mandrake wont drop the ball on the
downloaded edition, and stop offering updates, like
Redhat did (kind-off)...thus only supporting the paid
for editions.

Thanks all for the quick replies.I got my three
CD's downloaded in under 40mins over the weekend.

 continue to use the

[expert] PS hanging due to NFS?, Cant KILL

2003-10-28 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Hi All,

I run an openmosix cluster using Mandrake, and had
problems with PS hanging or whole system for that
matter. It is still an ongoing issue for a while now,
i took it up to openmosix guys, and response is that
90% of the time its network related, the rest 10%
hardware!

Tracing down the problem today via /proc, trying to
read every cmdline for a process, it hangs on
PID=25583.
Ran strace for `ps`, hanged same location (log below)

open(/proc/25583/status, O_RDONLY)= 7
read(7, Name:\tchange_missing\nState:\tD (d..., 511)
= 463
close(7)
munmap(0x40013000, 4096)= 0
open(/proc/25583/cmdline, O_RDONLY) = 7

THEN:
cd'ed into /proc/25583
`ls` (look at exe output)
lrwxrwxrwx1 stuart stds 0 Oct 28 14:16
exe -
/targus/linuxfiles/stuart/patches/ver006/exp03/.nfs000a839e0001
(deleted)

Not sure what that deleted line means, and all other
procs don't have it. However, BIGGER problem is that
this process 25583 cant be killed!! Not kill-9 or kill
-KILL that helps. Its currently owned by root.

Is there any other way to kill this sucker, other than
a reboot? Tired of rebooting every 2-3days like
windoze!

-Thanks All,
Richard

NopesNo problem with verizon-dsl. I use the adsl

password).

Cool thing is that i have an internal network (home of

sleepand the moment someone fires up a browser, it
will auto-connect. Its been running on this OLd

yrs nowpower failures? I comes right up. I even
moved, left it with the college kids in the same
apartment, some don't even know whats running their
network!!

Recently tried to install 9.1, no go...i guess the
hardware is t old.

[expert] Upgrade Path from 8.2

2003-10-23 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Hi All,

I have a solid/stable 8.2 box working as a webserver.
Since 8.2 is no longer supported, I imagine i have no
choice but to upgrade (not that savvy to make my own
update rpm's!)
I want to throw 9.1 in there. Do i have to go in
steps, 8.2 --9.0 --9.1 or simply throw 9.1 cd's and
install (live or from bootcd?).
Is it workable or I should simply go thru a
Complete-re-install?

_Thanks

yeah, so was the last one I saw melt down under

 three hours the

When it failed again the third day, it took about
 six hours to format an

 last time anyone
had to worry about losing data on that system.

[expert] reiserfs Corruption...some advice

2003-10-20 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Hi All,

Before i go ahead blindly with information from
reiserfsck, i thought i should post up here.
Corruption after a disk hiccup on an IDE-RAID drive.

-reiserfsck suggests running rebuild-tree
-I have already backed up the drive as is.
Should I continue? (Any bad experiences??)

 reiserfsck --check /dev/sda1
reiserfsck, 2002 - reiserfsprogs 3.6.3Will read-only
check consistency of the filesystem on /dev/sda1
Will put log info to 'stdout'

Do you want to run this program?[N/Yes] (note need to

if you've already backed it up, then go ahead and
 try rebuild-tree; what
have you got to lose? I fully expect you'll have to

over, based on my experiences with ReiserFS, but
 since you've got a back
 up that's okay.

Awww, it is a 900GB filesystem. Oh well, users, this
FS is out of bounds for at least 24hrs!
The corruption seemed to be on only one directory
tree

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ls -li *6345*

So file with inode 18546 only shows up when listed
explicitly. I could not rm/mv it either, claims no
such file or directory, though i was able to cp it!!
Strange!

You might want to consider using a
 more stable FS next
 time though.

Which is? (in your opinion, or proved ?)

[expert] Files not Showing up with ls

2003-10-17 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Mandy 9.0, reiserfs 3.6.3 on a Raid5 partition.

First, i try to transfer files 8 files from remote
host, using either sftp, scp or ftp. File listing
there::

total 79984
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus 3317856 Oct 17 07:08
s_01_6345.subrun.2d
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus37602368 Oct 17 07:08

-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus1567 Oct 17 07:52
p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d

It shows all files transfered. Then i do a listing on
the local system (my mandy box). Only four show up!!

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ll *6345*
-rw-r--r--1 stuart user1772 Oct 17 09:30
s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.2d

p_02_6345.subrun.2d
-rw-r--r--1 stuart user37602368 Oct 17 09:31
p_02_6345.subrun.3d

Then listing by inode::

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ll -i *6345*
  18541 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1772 Oct 17
09:43 s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.2d

  18544 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user37602368 Oct 17
09:43 p_02_6345.subrun.3d

And then, individual listing of one of the missing
files, by name, (Its there, it shows up then!!)::

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ll -li|grep 18546
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ll p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d
-rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17 09:38
p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d

AND with inode to make sure it is there::
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ll -li|grep 18546

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ll -i p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d
  18546 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17
09:38 p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d

YEs, it is there, but not showing up otherwise, unless
explicitly called.
So then, i copy it to another filename, it works.

I try a move::
[EMAIL PROTECTED]mv p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d
p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d.bad
mv: cannot move `p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d` to
`p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d.bad`: No such file or
directory

Wow.seems like some corruption in here. It is a
850GB filesystemI hope I dont have to
backup/reformat and restore the whole thing!!
Any other suggestions? (Havent ran reiserfsck yet,
still mounted!)

_Thanks

Richard

How does it compare/contrast with, say OpenMosix or

Run Windows and Linux from same boot partition =
 Dualboot

Run Windows and Linux different partitions on
 the same PC = Multiboot

Huh? I thought the difference between dualboot and
 multiboot was the
number of systems? Dualboot= 2 different systems,
 multiboot = more than
  2 different systems.

Yes, dual does mean 2 - 2 exactly. But, multi means
 more than 1. So, the
two terms can easily be confused when the actual
 count is two. The
difference is multiboot uses some type of boot
 manager that is capable
of switching among two *or more*, while dualboot is
 crude, normally
 incapable of more than two.

AFAIK, IBM first made the distinction back before
 Torvalds' kernel was
first used for GPL operating systems, sometime
 around 1987 I think,
 certainly by 1990.

How can you run Win and Linux from the same boot
 partition?

AFAIK, that's what win4lin is for. I've never
 trusted doze to share
space with any other OS, and don't know how it
 works.

What you can do is run doze (DOS 7+) and DOS
 (pre-v7) from the same FAT
partition, or DOS and older OS/2 versions from the
 same FAT partition.

I have several systems on my pc and each system is
 on it's own
partition(s). All are started by LILO in MBR. What
 kind of boot is
that, a dualboot or a multiboot? And if that is
 what you call
  multiboot, how does dualboot work?

Dual means exactly two. You're using multiboot if
 you see a startup
menu, such as LILO, which offers more than one
 partition to choose to
 boot from.

For DOS/doze or DOS/OS2 dualboot, you use an active
 system switcher
utility to switch active kernel and startup files
 just prior to using
the other system to reboot from. Dunno how win4lin
 works, but prolly
 something functionally similar.

I've been running Linux now for several years but
 never heard that
distinction. But I'm always happy to learn.

Find an ancient OS/2 installation manual to read.
 See also URL below.

http://rpmfind.net in most cases will have your rpm.

But you better update your package lists, perform a
urpmi.update -a

If you dont have additional sources created for
getting packages, check out easy urpmi at
http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php

This will create a command line to copy-n-paste that
will give additional sources for rpm packages. In my
opinion, urpmi proftpd should be working if u have
enough sources setup.

[expert] icewm exceed

2003-10-07 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
I have problems with icewm
I log in fine via exceed, only thing is there is no
background!, only default fuzzy black-dotted screen of
exceed. I am loggin in remotely, and I am on mdk9.0
On my other machine, where i log in locally (9.1mdk),
it is all fine. I can use any theme i want (prefer
xp), and the color is OK.

With 9.0, loggin in remotely, regardless of them, i do
not get a background coloronly the task bar
changes when i change theme.

Any ideas?

I have been a big kde user...but after todays
discussion, decided to jump into icewm. I like the way
it loads so quickly, if only i could get it to look
nice...

[expert] openssh-3.7p1 Mandy 9.0

2003-09-23 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Hi ALL,

I have a problem with openssh-3.7p1 working on Mandy.
It compiles fine, and I perform an install (on
/opt/openssh-3.7p1).
I can start it fine (link it up to /etc/init.d/..blah
blah), so service ssh restart starts it OK.
Problem is that then no-one can log in. Keeps
complaining about bad passwd!! I have openssh-3.6p1
(compiled version) working OK, and I can log in with
it, using same password.

My problem is that I HAVE to use the latest and
greatest out there, and YES, i know Mandrake has
released an rpm patch for 3.6p1. But, with our
internal scan, anything running a version identified
as vulnerable, even if patched, is flagged. So i have
always used locally compiled versions of ssh. Anyone
else gone past this problem?

Longing for a response/idea/suggestion/recommendation
only on getting openssh-3.7p1 to work.

_Thanks

Richard.

We also don't run our own server for updates so we
 have to wait for

With all that in mind, I think this one-man

Wow,

Can go with mindi/mondo (urpmi mind) would take care
of it.

Or, in my case, buy a cheapo drive $30.00 gives u 40Gb
nowadays, and
tar cf /dev/hdb/root.tar /
for i in /usr /var /opt /home /whateverfilesystem
do
tar cf /mnt/hdb/$i $i
done

So if hda dies, all u do is replace it, and boot with
install disk, rescue mode, create ur new filesystems,
and restore from backup drive only the files/directory
into new location.
then run lilo -r /mnt/hdb/
reboot with new drive.

Works everytime for me.

I even clone systems this way (primitive, but works!)
Thanks

any inconvenience if it appears as a double, but I
really wish for an answer on this issue.

 Subject: Complete system backup

 Hi all,

Have an embarrasing question... I never did a
complete backup of my system (I know I should be
ashamed:) ) and most times I just restored it by
hand step by step in case something foul happened.
Unfortunatelly now my System has been running stable
since last year and I changed/customized/installed
so many things on my server/firewall that I am
starting to shiver at the idea to redo everything
from scratch if it would somehow fail... On the
other hand, partial backup on such a customized
installation would also be a pain as I would have to
think of what things I changed and what should I
backup and though I have a good memory, it would be
almost futile to think of all the possible files I
might want to backup. Also a partial backup might
conflict if I would reinstall the entire OS and load
the backup if the backup files do not fit the
packages versions. So I was kinda wondering if there
is such thing as a backup where to restore the whole
system (including OS itself) you'd put the backup CD
in and let it restore installer like. So without
having to install linux first. This might also prove
usefull later when I want to change the hdd of my
server with a faster one. For now I have 3
older/slower hdds and because of that I am kind of
limited with the partitions options. It would also
be cool if I could specify by backup to ignore the
current partitions/hdds, so I could restore all
later on a single bigger hdd. So... Is there a way
to make such a backup or am I running after
 windmills? :)

Best regards and thanks in advance for your help
 guys,
 Adrian
