[expert] IPTABLES
I have been trying to get iptables set up on my gateway machine, but it isn't working like I think it should. I have the following entry in the rc.firewall script to block incoming SYN packets: EXT_IF=ppp0 IPTABLES=//sbin/iptables $IPTABLES -A INPUT -i $EXT_IF -p tcp ! --syn -j ACCEPT yet ethereal shows these getting through: Source port: 1302 (1302) Destination port: 135 (135) Sequence number: 2684291305 Header length: 28 bytes Flags: 0x0002 (SYN) 0... = Congestion Window Reduced (CWR): Not set .0.. = ECN-Echo: Not set ..0. = Urgent: Not set ...0 = Acknowledgment: Not set 0... = Push: Not set .0.. = Reset: Not set ..1. = Syn: Set ...0 = Fin: Not set I also have the following: $IPTABLES -A FORWARD -i $EXT_IF -p tcp --dport 135 -s 0.0.0.0/0 -j DROP which should block packets detined for port 135, but also seems ineffective. What might be the problem? The above is just a snippet from the rc.firewall script. I can post it in its entirety if that would help. -- Thomas K. Interestingly, RedHat did include support in their 9.0 release and as I said, the adapters have been around since the latter part of last year. I'm puzzed as to why Mandrake didn't include support in 9.1 since drivers were available. By the time they get around to providing support (their next release will probably be October), the hardware will have been out for about a year. As it is, I may have to put RedHat on this system (or get an older adapter card and not use the onboard adapter) in order to use it. So far I have been unsuccessful in getting it recognized as a USB scanner. In particular, it is related to the msec script that gets run from both /etc/cron.daily and /etc/cron.hourly. This has the result of forcing the 'ShowUsers' setting in kdmrc to 'All'. Commenting this line out fixes the problem and still allows higher security level settings to force 'ShowUsers' to 'None'. This script also affects similar settings in gdm (I believe it's the 'Browser' setting)and this change should fix that as well. Worked like a charm. Thanks! I found that alternate to commenting out the allow_user_list(1) entry, simply changing the value to (0) worked as well. Thanks again, for solving an annoying problem! Ric No worries. Commenting the line out restores control to the KDM and GDM configuration dialogs for the lower security levels, while changing the value from 1 to 0 forces that setting regarless of what you do in the configuration dialogs. But, the end result is the important part as long as you know where the changes are being made. Cheers -- Thomas K. On Friday 19 October 2001 16:23, you wrote: Hi, I've got LM 8.0 installed. What is the best way to organize dial on demand for several linux/win/mac boxes. Thanks Alex Here's another method that is a bit more work initially, but I find that is works well. As root... In /etc/ppp/peers create a file. Name it for your isp, eg: /etc/ppp/peers/la-tierra. Put the following lines in the file. /dev/modem 115200 crtscts connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/chat-la-tierra' noauth user yourusername In /etc/ppp create a chat file called chat-isp. Mine is chat-la-tierra. Enter the following: TIMEOUT 40 ABORT NO CARRIER ABORT NO DIALTONE ABORT ERROR ABORT NO ANSWER ABORT BUSY ABORT Username/Password Incorrect ATZ OK ATF1 OK ATDT555 CONNECT replace the 555 with your isp's phone number Modify your /etc/ppp/options file as follows: lock defaultroute 192.168.1.101:192.168.1.102 ipcp-accept-remote ipcp-accept-local demand holdoff 5 idle 300 The 'demand' entry is what makes dial-on-demand work. The ip addresses on the third line are dummies and must not exist on your local subnet. If your isp uses PAP or CHAP: Modify your /etc/chap-secrets and /etc/pap-secrets as follows: add the line username * password * If your isp requires a login script(EXPECT SEND pairs), add the script to the end of your chat-isp file. Enter your username and password of course. These entries should be separated by tabs. Both of these files are essentially the same. The permissions for these files should be set to 0600 or pppd will complain. Modify /etc/sysconfig/network change FORWARD_IPV4=false to FORWARD_IPV4=true remove any lines that start with GATEWAY or GATEWAYDEV To start pppd at boot, add the following to the end of your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. /usr/sbin/pppd call isp on your other computers, set the gateway entry to the ip of your linux box and the DNS entry to the ip of your isp's DNS server and dial-on-demand should work from any computer on your local subnet without the need for being logged into the Linux box. Much more detail can be found on mandrakeuser.org. This setup makes it fairly easy to reconfigure when upgrading if you back up your /etc directory prior to the upgrade and restore the appropriate files. There is a caveat. You will probably need to install and setup iptables to keep netbios name requests from your windows machines from triggering the dialer. hope this helps.
