[expert] SMP
Hi there all, Forgive me if this is a trivial question... Im trying to get Mandrake 7.0 to work with SMP support... I have tried several different things to get it to work and the Kernel panics... I get a message something to the affect AIX7xxx was compiled for vmlinuz... linuz not for smp. This is my SCSI card I know that it is expecting to work with the UP kernel but what else do I have to do... I simply set the vmlinuz link to the smp kernel and re-ran lilo. What else to I have to do.. Ive even tried installing the latest smp kernel from Mandrake Cooker... no luck Could someone also educate me on what is happening throughout several of the steps mentioned in the HOWTOs and FAQs. I really dont want to bother somone with restating whats in these but its unclear at least from my perspective if I install binaries or the binaries are already there, do I need to do a make module_install even if the kernel is already installed, even if the RPM has the *.o files... Any help is REALLY appreciated Werner
Re: [expert] VNC
Paul, Thanks for the help... I tried downloading the binaries and did have the same result... for some reason I can perform all X operations as I would expect, no crashes. I guess Ill try a native compile once again and see what happens... also Ill try and list the symbol table for both and see if anything looks strange...Im still at a loss as to why Thanks for the help Werner Paul Waldo wrote: Hi Werner, I had a lot of problems with the VNC RPM on the Mandrake 6.1 disk. I was VNCing from work (latest version, 3.3.3 R2) to the VNC server at home. It had a lot of problems, and I finally just downloaded the binaries from the source and it works like a champ. Ive used the RPMs and also done a native compile of the VNC software from the source code obtained at the VNC site. When I try to use certain software from Mentor graphics the server and client crashes... It works fine in X and dont know if anyone has seen this problem as well This has worked fine in previous versions of Redhat... Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Re: [expert] How does a Linux GUI get launched not from login scripts (automatically)
Shawn To call gnome or enlightenment, you need to edit the .xinitrc file In this file add, gnome-session Hope that helps Werner "Shawn E. Anyway, what part of my boot process launches this gui? In Solaris 1.0 (my old background) there was a .cshrc file that did everything like this. However the .cshrc .bashrc etc files dont refer to this ion any fashion. Also, is there an easy way to have the startx command call gnome instead of KDE ??? Shawn E.
