Is the ISA scsi card itself recognized???
9 out of 10 times the generic scsi cards that come with the scanner are not
very good (and that is an understatement)

Hi,
I hope you can help me to get my scanner working.
I have a Black widow 9636PRO with their generic SCSI ISA
card.
I have tried getting it working when using other
distributions - Suse 6.1, Red Hat 6.2 etc but to no effect.

Just as an aside, this install of Mandrake 7 from PC Plus
has been the easiest and trouble free installation I have
ever carried out.

Thanks in advance for any time spent on my request.

This is an old question but for me its a new machine.

It's an AMd K6 450 with 32 mb RAM (soon to be increased!)

On firing up Mandrake 7 (with kernel 2.2.15-0.18mdk), it tells me
I have 23MB ram. I've added
append =  "mem=32m"
to lilo.conf with no effect.
Can anyone tell me what is going on here?
Is Linux not detecting the RAM?
Is it discounting space used by the kernel?

I've trawled the docs but couldn't find any clues.

TIA

ISP is using CISCO Access Server with char/chap authentication schema.
When connecting the ppp stops with error that other end of ppp link

Hello all, again thanks for the amount of replies.
Finally managed to get it going by creating a new entry in the lilo.conf,
labelled it 191, and put the "new" append line in.
It is now happily using the amount of memory it should use, so me is now a
happy chappy.

My lilo.conf has a line like

append="mem=191M otheroption=this"

and it works fine.

Dumb question, did you run lilo after copying the conf file???

RE: [expert] Memory upgrade

Joseph,
if my memory serves me correct it is:
append="hdc=scsi-ide","mem191M"
But I did try the append Memory on its own as well.
I'll just try experimenting a little bit more tonight.

Fred,

What does your append line look like for the machine that does NOT work? If
memory serves me it should be something like this:

append="mem=191M","something_else=this"

You'll need to check the archives or a man page for the exact punctuation
but
it should be enough to get you started.

I've tried various X-windows interfaces and I am amazed to find that after
browsing through KDE, GNOME, XFCE3, WindowMaker, Afterstep, ICEWM, and
Plain_X11.. NONE of them have a windows properties selection that allows
for the editing of screen resolution! Unless it is hidden in some quiet
corner of the X-windows design of each, there is no such utility!

I am familiar with Xconfigurator, but while using Mandrake 7.02 I have
found that my configurator will not allow me to set my resolution size
manually.. it gives me an error even though it works (sort of) if I exit
after settings have been made. Though, I can't select 800x600 at high
resolution.. so I have to settle with 8 bit default.

Can someone please tell me why none of these wonderful X-windows programs
have a setting to change screen resolution like Windows does? Don't get
me wrong, I am happier with Linux overall than I am with Windows.. but one
would think the Linux community would have enough brains to make things
easier to deal with than they currently are.

Ok.. gripe is over. Thanks.

I just thought I mention this:
Actually, it doesn't have to be a WinModem (although this one probably is)
to
have this problem.
I had (just sold it today) a Diamond SupraExpress PCI modem, which is not a
winmodem, yet I had the same problems
as I did with winmodems. It is heavily dependant on full plug'n'play support
because of the way it communicates through the PCI
port. On the RedHat hardware compatibility list it is listed as
non-compatible.
But I have found a file VERY hidden on the modem's
driver disk which had a few lines on how to use it under Linus. This
involved
the use of the DOS driver (which I coud not fin anywhere) and LOADLIN and a
few
changes in autoexec.bat. So, in short, I would have had to 'warm boot'
Linux.

Dear friends:

Using Mandrake 7.0

Just a while back I told the whole world how, with the help of a number
of list members, I finally solved my kpppd connection problem. Well,
yes, I did. I click on pppd, connect and it goes through the routine (as
I see in the log screen) and soon it CONNECTS at 57,000 or whatever.
Then it says "done" and I turn the log off and I can see by the docked
icon that it is still on and the graph shows kppp to be fully connected
and functioning.

BUT, when I turn on Netscape, Realplayer or my FTP program, all I get is
blank pages with the error message: "server could not be found."

I was fooled earlier because I had my ADSL on simultaneously with my
kpppd. So, while kpppd was indeed functioning, I was surfing the web and
listening to my radio thanks to ADSL, not my dial-up modem.

This time I turned off my ADSL modem, turned off my computer and
rebooted. When I got to XWindows WITHOUT my ADSL, I clicked on kpppd. It
connected but, as I said, I couldn't get to my home page in Netscape
(the N.Y. Times page) It was blank. And I got that "can't connect to
your server" or whatever message.

However, I didn't have any problem connecting to my Unix shell account
at our local Free Net using my minicom communications program. I got in
and got to the New Times page (using Lynx). So, the modem is obviously
able to connect to the outside world.

I can't help but wonder what in the world is going on?

Would appreciate any help or explanations or suggestions.

Thanks so very much.

Benjamin

[expert] PPPD dying, return of the Jedi

2000-02-10 Thread fred . deklein

Hello all, I posted a message a week ago, regarding PPPD dying, the message
I got was: "The remote system is required to authenticate itself but I
couldn't find any secret (password) which would let it use an IP address."
This was with Mandrake 7v1.
I added the noauth to the options, and although I could logon to the
network, I could not browse. I have now installed LM7v2, and had exactly the
same result.
Any suggestions to solve this problem very welcome

Shure... it's my problem too :-) as far as I'm coming inside the problem I
knew that there is no ioption.ippp0
at your system ( which is needed to do the call ).

I'm running MD 6.1 with the latest updates.
Now I give it a try by installing isdn step by step without kisdn to see
what has to be where.

let's be in contact to solve OUR problem :-)

[expert] pppd dying unexpectedly

2000-02-04 Thread fred . deklein

Hello All,
I am new to this list, running Linux for a couple of years now, and recently
installed LM7
Install went through okay (albeit a bit long), but I experienced problems
with connecting to the internet via kppp. This is the fault report I got:
The remote system is required to authenticate itself but I couldn't find any
secret (password) which would let it use an IP address.
I then uninstalled v7, installed Mandrake 6.1, made sure the internet was
working, upgraded to v7 and experienced the same problems.
Anyone familiar with the problem (and more importantly a solution)???

Help much appreciated.
